View Full Version : I think my Girlfriend is suicidal
seldomTap 02-22-2003, 07:01 PM No ****.
They story is, she is a teacher. Her first two years out of uni she had good contracts at a decent school. However this year, the union jacked up cause so many young teachers were getting metropolitan jobs ahead of older teachers...so hence she hasn't got one yet this year.
The parents at her old school have started a petition to get her back there as she is apparently very good at what she does and does a better job than a lot of the older, tired, couldn't give a **** anymore teachers.
In the meantime however, she is waiting for teachers to get sick so she can get relief days and earn some money. This isn't happening a lot either...so she is on this downward spiral of depression where she just wants to sleep, cry and drink to stop crying. She has said stuff like "I don't know why I am bothering" and "You don't need me around to make your days worse" as I am currently working full time and don't have a great love for my occupation!
Even her Mother has called me and asked if I have any ideas of how to make her life better. I have honestly tried everything, but ****ed if I know what is going to help. I am hal;f expecting to get home from work one day and find her OD'd with painkillers on the floor.
Any ideas??
The Jake 02-22-2003, 07:38 PM Stop poking fun about the kebabs??
No seriously I've seen this kind of trend a lot with unemployment atm - particularly with overly saturated industries atm.
I think the only thing you can do is focus on the positive things. For instance, if the parents have started a petition to get her back there, then that says something. They obviously care enough about her to get her back there. So my guess is that she is very good at her job.
Remind her its the job market that has caused the situation, not her - she could try getting employment in other areas perhaps (maybe privately tutoring kids?) after school hours or something like that, or rather than being a relief teacher, try to apply to get full time work as a teacher - or even perhaps apply for jobs outside what she does at present.
Just reiterate it's the job market and not her.
If you think it's a bit more than that, and it might be a clinical form of depression or something then I'd suggest a doctor perhaps?
Good luck bro - call me if you need anything.

LukeDothSucketh 02-22-2003, 07:42 PM Everyone needs something to live for. If you have no one to love your work, or school might become your passion. If you have no work you spend more time with loved ones. If you do love her, you really need to make an effort to be with her, take her out, and make sure that she has something to live for.
Its not hard to lose faith in yourself, as humans we rely on others so we can cope with stuggles we face every day. I think all you can do is make sure she understands that she can always rely on you, even if she has nothing else to rely on.
seldomTap 02-22-2003, 07:42 PM She is tutoring a few kids now...she has applied for a few private school positions as well, but was seen as being too inexperienced for what they wanted. All the public school jobs here are through the ed department so it is their game.
Believe me, I have told her thousands of times that she has done everything and more she should have doen and that it is cause of the market...it doesn't change much though it would seem.
Her Mum seems to think it could have gotten to the clinical depression level allready...which is pretty close to the mark. I have seen people institutionalised for less believe me.
The Jake 02-22-2003, 07:53 PM Well... ****.
You could suggest she see a councellor or something, and just say that her mum and you are **** worried about her.
- The Jake
seldomTap 02-22-2003, 07:55 PM I think that is what will happen if things don't pick up real soon Jake.

Believe me, that has been done on my part. I have seen more of her in the last 3 months than in the previous 3 years we have been together.
But there is only so much I can do about it. I listen and all that, say the right things, but it isn't helping a great deal right now it would seem
The Jake 02-22-2003, 08:01 PM It is the hardest thing in the world being unemployed for that long. Seen it first hand. I think you have to honestly assess however how much of it is you and how much of it is circumstancial.
It won't cheer you up much, but at least you know it's not your fault.
Insofar as the depression goes, just keep a close eye on her. I'd suggest the councelling man. Even volunteer to go with her if she wants you to (she may just want you to wait outside for her and be moral support or she might want you to go in with her).

seldomTap 02-22-2003, 08:05 PM You could be on to something...I am unsure how much she would talk with a counsellor though. She hardly speaks to anyone about deep issues. She has had a strange upbringing (a whole new thread in itself) and has closed herself off to the world emotionally. Me and her mum are the only two that get past the exterior, which is 99% of the time cheery to all concerned...even her best friend has no idea what goes on in her head most of the time.
The Jake 02-22-2003, 08:07 PM I guess all you can do is stress that you want to see her get through it and you'll stand behind her 100% and do whatever it takes.
That's what I'd do. If you volunteer to go to councelling with someone over issues like that, it doesn't seem so 'bad' anymore.

seldomTap 02-22-2003, 08:15 PM You are wise beyond your years Jake!
Cheers
LukeDothSucketh 02-22-2003, 08:19 PM Jake goes for the Ally Oop! Wins the ball game!
Fallout 02-22-2003, 08:33 PM Seldom, if he is depressed because she is not able to teach, encourage her to get involved in the community. Work with the handycapped. The eldry.
It sounds like she went into her choosen profession because she likes to make a difference. There are plently of ways she can still do that, they just might not be paying positions
seldomTap 02-22-2003, 08:45 PM Good idea Creed...only thing is that the way things are right now, she can't commit to anythig like that cause she can get called to work up till say 9am any week day, so she doesn't want to say to people "I will be there wednesday at 11" if she can't definitely do it.
She is such a kid person it is almost sickening. If we go to a frinds place that has kids, she will sit around with the kids and can talk their language really well.
I prefer dogs personally

Well, working at a super kitchen is noramly done at night or on weekends. I have done both, and even if she does work during the day, it shouldn't affect what she does at night.
It makes you feel good inside, try it
seldomTap 02-22-2003, 08:51 PM Thanks for the suggestions...hopefully she will find something to fill in her time...that is what is killing her now, the boredom
LukeDothSucketh 02-22-2003, 08:54 PM BOREDOM! WHY ELSE WOULD I BE HERE!? Boredom is great!
The Golden Bear 02-22-2003, 08:57 PM Tell her you love her., and that no matter what you will be there for her.
seldomTap 02-22-2003, 08:58 PM Yes...but Luke you and I can handle boredom in ways like this.
She has no real interest outside of her work, which revolves around kids. She is a workaholic and is happiest when flat out with school work. She needs a hobby...problem is what?

LukeDothSucketh 02-22-2003, 08:59 PM Take up brail so she could help blind kids, anything so that she knows eventually she can teach kids again.
The Golden Bear 02-22-2003, 09:00 PM well u tried.

Magic Man 02-23-2003, 12:51 AM I think it needs a third party for operation tho - or it'd be like someone trying to blow their head off with a shot gun.

seldomTap 02-23-2003, 01:07 AM this was once a serious thread...till I was party to hijacking it...is it bad to hijack your own threads??
JasonLeonardOBE 02-23-2003, 01:16 AM Maybe you need to let Jake take over for a bit. Skip the pills just this once.
