View Full Version : Took a tremendous shot from a superheavy
Evil_Meat 05-24-2007, 10:07 AM So at my gym theres this old guy who's been coming in who is gonna start training my trainer for a few more fights. Today he told my trainer that "I want to see what you can do", and i was the one who went in there with him. My trainer is like 6"1 220-230 pounds and im 6"1 190 pounds, and he has A LOT of boxing experience. I've only been boxing for like 4-5 months. I started out well outboxing him and effectively working the body, then he landed a crunching left hook to the liver that seriously hurt. I was on the run trying to keep away and keep my guard in a turtle shell type defence to hide the look of pain on my face. He then caught me against the ropes and threw a right left to the body follow by a huge right hand to the head that i moved right into trying to move head forward to duck it. The shot landed completely flush, and he had his body behind it. He's also known as a guy with a lot of power. As i got hit I felt a brutal headache feeling with slight dizziness for about 1-2 seconds before my head cleared. As soon as I took the shot my trainer said thats it were done, as he after said "I've never felt my fist connect so cleanly on someone's face" and the old guy said "that's the hardest shot u'll ever take". Luckily it landed on my cheekbone, eye, and nose and not my chin alone. I got a little black eye which is the first time i've ever had a mark of my face. I've still never even had a nosebleed. I can't believe my legs didn't buckle at all from the shot as it hurt like hell. All i really learned in that session is that i can take a shot.
Good on you but try to make sure u dont take a shot like that again cause next time it may connect a bit flusher on the chin and you may get hurt. But anyways well done for taking the shot like a man. :boxing: :boxing:
shawn_ 05-24-2007, 03:26 PM did you see the pretty colors flash?

GRkiller 05-24-2007, 07:40 PM That had to be one hell of a headache.
SquareCircle 05-24-2007, 08:25 PM you found out you can take a shot?
well, it wasn't on the chin, had it been, you might be in a coma. your trainer sounds like he's a dickhead, trying to take out a greenie to impress some old timer...
oh well. I bet your neck is sore after awhile from taking that punch.
King James III 05-25-2007, 01:48 AM Yea that did sound like a dick move from your trainer....but i think i would have buckled lol Im a tough one but i got no chin at all...

a good chin is very important buts is far better not to get hit!

Yeah man, I bet it would of at least put me on my ass had i been hit on the chin. His power is just rediculous, every man in my family is known to be very hard headed, and none of them have EVER had a concussion. The fact that i can be stunned by getting hit on the cheekbone with sparring gloves on is crazy. I've hit my head very hard many times in my life and nothing has jarred my head like this punch did. It was such a loud sound when i got hit. My neck was sore the night i took the punch but not the next day. My trainer was very sorry about it and apologized numerous times. It must of been huge, because right after he said I'm not allowed to spar all week.
It's the old guy's fault it happend, because he told me to fight on the inside by ducking and going to the body when under serious pressure. In this case, I dropped my left then ducked down instead of ducking down with my left hand up then throwing the punch. As soon as i began ducking down with my left down i was badly caught. I don't yet have the proper inside fighting skills to fight someone this much bigger and more skilled on the inside. I can do well on the outside, because I have an overwhelming speed advantage to the point where I can even beat him to the punch if my timing is off.

Against a far more experienced puncher, I can't think of worse advice. He's basically telling you, 'Please drop your hands and goto his body so I can see this guy lay into you.'
But hey, don't get discouraged...Don't stop going, keep going, you'll get much better in a short amount of time if you take this sport seriously. Train hard,
against that guy, who I'm assuming is short and stocky, I woulda just moved and jabbed but I'm tall. When he gets in close I would've gone all defensive, guys who are that much more skilled than you it's pointless to try to really contend with them in an exchange, put your gloves by your ears and move your head side to side to avoid uppercuts and hooks while you bull in with your head...That's better advice for when he pressures you. Just beware if he's a smart fighter he'll give himself punching room, so you have to keep very close to him if you do this.

Yeah man, im not gonna get discouraged getting beat by my trainer, in fact it feels quite good that my trainer who has probably more than 10 years of boxing experience has to try very hard in order to beat me. Last time we sparred which was a month ago i was under serious pressure like this time except that the few big shots he caught me with didnt hurt because i was always rolling away from them because I didn't have some ******* there to tell me to go to the body.

I guess that is one way for your trainer to resolve his frustrations. Personally, I don't think laying a beating on a kid is a good way of training him. One thing you should have learned that the need for good defensive skills can not be over emphsized. Practise bobbing, weaving, rolling, slipping etc until you get it right. Do the drills, get the skills. Once you get comfortable with it, you will find that you can look at your opponent and anticipate what he is going to do. That is one of the reasons that Floyd Mayweather is so hard to hit.
Jimmy The Gent 05-30-2007, 01:42 PM I took a clean straight right to the chin with the other guy wearing bag mitts, we were just punching gloves going through drills then out of nowhere he nailed me. my head shook back and i got dazed for a second then back to normal. my legs held strong but i did have a headache for the next few days

you shouldve taken your gloves off and layed a beating on him. sucker punch you , with a power shot, while doing a drill? fuuuuck that. guarantee you if that was me i wouldve ****ed him up (or got ko'd trying)

From what you have said it does not sound like an accident. That guy should have been kicked out of the club. In future, remember to keep your chin down. When you keep your chin on your chest, it is much harder to snap the head back if you get hit.
Jimmy The Gent 05-30-2007, 10:17 PM I just smiled back at him, probably dented his ego big time, he immeditaly apologized and nothing more came of it
Hitman932 05-30-2007, 11:02 PM my trainer used to be a pro, he fought roger mayweather and livingstone bramble, he lost both fights but he had a pretty respectable career..
but hes a welterweight and im a cruiserweight, so hopefully he wont knock me senseless with any one shot
