The following is an excerpt from an interview with Wanderlei Silva from Gazeta do Povo, translated from Portuguese to English:

The eagerly anticipated return of Southern Brazilian fighter Wanderlei Silva to the ring of Pride (or to the Octagon of the Ultimate Fighting Championship) will not happen in this year. For the first time in the year, Wandeco as he is known to his friends admitted that his return will wait until 2008. Among the some reasons raised for the Chute Boxe Academy fighter?s sabbatical was his contractual situation and the need for a period of rest and improvement.

His problem of late isn’t psychological nor do I think his problem is due to all the “wars” he’s endured; simply it’s just that he’s been exposed as a one trick pony by technically superior fighters. He’s lost that mystique he carried with him during the run that saw him KO’ing Cans right left and centre.

Conventional thinking says that he’s done, nothing else he’ll ever achieve in this sport but goodness knows conventional thinking has been proven wrong often enough, I hope that’s true.

you cant say that, he beat everyone he was suppose to beat reguardless of who they were and he even knocked out the supposed number 2 lhw fighter (rampage) twice....you also tend to forget he beat saku 20 times, lol- who at the time was sort of unstoppable!

i dont think hes done....i just think he relied on his stand up and aggresiveness more than anything! he has a great ground game, but he just doesnt use it enuff! if he trains more ground work and some tech boxing he will do just fine!

war wanderli!!!!111

Yeah I’ll give you Rampage (first time they fought at least) but seriously, I do believe that he was a league above everybody else he fought after the Tito loss up until Arona (including Sak but that probably my bias against him clouding my judgement).

But again I hope this isn’t end of elite league Wandy, the guys far to psychotic (yet lovable and honest) to just wither away and be forgotten and I’ve gotta see Wandy/Chuck before he retires -_-
