View Full Version : Bad Luck or just Hopeless?
EdgeHead 02-18-2003, 09:10 PM Hello,
I am an 18 year old wrestler from Newfoundland Canada.
I have been wrestling for 10 years and want to mix my wrestling skills with submissions/strikes......Shoot-fighting
BUT where I live NOBODY knows how to shoot fight, we dont even have muay thai kick boxing here, I can wrestle very well but have no clue how to strike or submissions hols, neither does my coach, PLEASE ANY IDEAS?
Downtown 02-18-2003, 09:18 PM Well asides from moving you could give boxing or kyoshin karate or kenpo karate a try.
DOGGx0 02-18-2003, 10:40 PM ever think about brazilian jiu jitsu?
you get alot out of that, plus it integrates with wrestling.
you also get to learn the art of jiu jitsu and grappling. :)
EdgeHead 02-18-2003, 10:47 PM only things we have around here are, Kenpo karate/kodakan karate, Thai Kwando , boxing and judo.
Which will help more with strikes and/or submission?
wondermut 02-18-2003, 10:49 PM Do boxing and judo.
EdgeHead 02-18-2003, 11:01 PM I am so glad i found this forum, Nobody around here has a clue :(
Thank you so much for your help everybody :) maybe some day in the future you will see me at an event, thats what im striving for ;)
The Mouse 02-18-2003, 11:01 PM karate/kodakan karate, Thai Kwando ,
That **** won't work in a real fight, or in competition... at all, lol. Judo and boxing will deffinitely help you. After you got Judo down with the gi real good.. ask your instructor if you could take the gi off and do it in shorts and a t-shirt.. then once u got the hang of that, incorporate your boxing skills in with it, and you'll be set.
Kempo Chris 02-18-2003, 11:11 PM Boxing and judo definetley
maybe kenpo- it depends on the school/instructor

I have the same problem here. Everyone is correct abour Judo and Boxing but don't let the boxing coaches get you in to bad habbits. Royce Gracie said that if you can't find a place to learn BJJ
that you should get some videos and a couple of friends and learn what you can from them. I know its not as good as the real thing but its better than nothing. You could do the same to learn kicks and knees from the Muay Thai videos.Again not as good as an instructor but it will get you started.
Good luck and keep us updated.
Damn we're smart around here. I agree 100% with everyone else, if I was in your shoe's I'd be doing boxing and judo and keep working on your wrestling. Get some BJJ tapes, or Vale Tudo tapes.(Mario Sperry's vale tudo tapes are good) Work on kicks and knees on your own, focus on low kicks and maybe some body kicks. There are a ton of sights on the net also, that have BJJ moves that you could learn from. Check out the Technique Section at www.jenbjj.com . If you want more websites with techniques let us know and we'll post more.
EdgeHead 02-19-2003, 01:41 PM Again, I thank you all so much, i joined up in boxing today, and I also asked my wrestling coach if he could show me how to do some takedowns without poping my head into the oponents armpit which in wrestling is a great stratagy but in mma almost always leads to a guiatine choke.
Anyways i also start intense arm workouts today to make my punches stronger *rubs arm* and I think it's workin already ;)
Thank you so much again, I cant explaine how much you've helped me, without you guys I would have been lost.
Bluecifer 02-19-2003, 01:45 PM Not in here bulldogge- Zen420
Edgehead- you should go to the Training Journal forum and start your own training journal to track your progress, other people will check it out too and answer any questions or concerns you may have. Good luck.
seldomTap 02-21-2003, 02:39 AM The guys here gave some top advice. Boxing is great...not only will you get some good stand up training, you will also probably get some in ring experience eventually and that can only be good for you.
EdgeHead 02-21-2003, 12:55 PM I wont fight in a tornament until I believe I am good enough to not be defeated, I dont like being defeated and I dont want to be defeated :)
I started boxing but it seems the instructor is kind of a dumb ass he hasnt showed me anything I didnt know yet from street fighting, but then again i've only been going there for 3 days :devil

I wouldn't try to skip anything your boxing coach tells you.
I know the basics are boring but you will learn how to punch through someone and some good defence and body position.
I was pushed in to the ring too soon and it really messed up my confidence back then so take it slow and learn what you can.
Good Luck.
seldomTap 02-22-2003, 06:52 PM Listen to Curly...he is wise in such matters
