View Full Version : protein bad?
Hourglass 05-17-2007, 05:10 PM I have heard a lot about how protein causes liver damage over time. I tried searching on google and really couldn't find any details. Would taking 33 grams of whey protein after working out every day be bad? Are they talking about insane amounts of protien or is this just a myth? I've heard a few people say it but never saw anything ever written up about it or whatnot.
No taking 30 odd grams of protein after a workout would be good. As it would replenish your muscles and make them grow back quicker and stronger. I think if you use it sparingly you'll be fine but dont take any more than 50 grams at a time, as your body cannot digest more than 50 and the rest will go to waste. Hope that helps

You were probably mistaking the protien for creatine, if you do not take in enough water with creatine theres a possibability of you gettin kidney stones.
Animal Squabbs 05-18-2007, 02:04 AM if protein is bad then Im ****ed. Sometimes I only eat shakes and bars all day.

DA1CATAS 05-18-2007, 09:19 AM Protein is good for you... don't listen to whoever said its not.

If that's all you eat, you're ****ed regardless...
Obviously protein is good for you. HOW MUCH protein you need, and whether overconsumption is bad/how bad, is somewhat controversial. A lot of different opinions on that one...
Trick 05-18-2007, 10:14 AM too much causes problems. I should say metabolism of too much does. Which is why high-protein diets (Atkins... I think, can't get these diets straight anymore) are bad for you. Also, digestion is tough when you have more than say 50g in one short time, you'll probably notice some indegistion of some kind. So long as you need it, then it's good. I go through more than 100g a day, but if I was a a lazy fatass, then that would not be good, so it's all relative.

All this hogwash about protein is a North American fad. Go to other places in the world where people get less than half as much protein you will find they are just as healthy. There was a big study done in China some years ago where it was found that the Chinese eat about one third the protein and calcium that we get here in North America. Osteoporosis is rare in Cinina and the average life span was only 4 years shorter despite the fact that most Chinese do not have access to a high level of medical care.
Everybody in this forum is cackling about the latest protein potion, yet there isn't a shred of evidence that any of this junk is beneficial.

you dont think that may have to do with more than just the protein amount?

Of course, but I was responding to all the protein propaganda.

I guess I hear ya potatoes, but the truth is, many hardworking amateur athletes do not get enough protein in their diets.

no comment! hahaha:rofl:
danny stash 05-21-2007, 01:55 PM Whatever about the american hogwash. Let me tell you one thing i know for sure. To repair damaged muscle tissue you need protein. Look at bodybuilders you think they dont look like malnourished chinese for a reason. They continually break down muscle tissue and eat lots of protein for repair. I am not saying a garganuatuan stature is needed for boxing whatsoever but eat your protein along with the rest of your veges etc... Anyone saying a post workout protein shake is wasting time is wasting my time.
Peterp 05-22-2007, 12:55 AM According to some Diet expert somewhere in the world, Protein is bad, Fat is bad and carbs are bad, so just don't eat anything ! lol
EliteSoldier 05-22-2007, 01:41 AM Proteins over-rated. The thing is that unless you're working out like you're on steroids and want to get mr. universe size. You really don't need to have as much protein in you as they advertise. Protein turns into fat anyways when not worked out. It's a waste if you don't constantly workout

Joe Frazier in his book Box Like The Pros claims that boxers don't need any more protein than anybody else. That is the way he trained like so many thousands of boxers before him. Boxers aren't bodybuilders, consequently they don't need the same kind of diet.
Edison Miranda couldn't make weight for a reason. Could it have been too many protein shakes?

It would have been too many anything, fruitcups, protein shakes, whatever. Frazier is a great, but not exactly a scientist. Trust me, any athlete needs more protein than a normal joe. To say otherwise is utterly ridiculous.

.....yeah, but normal joe is getting 3 times more protein than china joe, yet china joe is just as healthy as normal joe. we can therefor conclude tha althlete joe doesn't need any more protein that normal joe is getting because normal joe is getting 3 times more than he needs.

I see your reasoning I suppose. But it's not that simple. You think Yao Ming only eats like 25g of protein a day?

Hell, I don't know. All I know is what I read about that big study done comparing the health of Chinese vs. Americans. There is some weird things going on over there in China. Did you see that show on PBS about acupuncture in China? They showed this woman getting open heart surgery without anesthetic. Just stuck a few needles in her!
Trick 05-22-2007, 01:17 PM Ya, well if you depress certain nerves you won't feel certain things, that's basically where it all comes from. Also, a non-athlete can make due with little protein, you can make 12 out of the 20 amino acids yourself anyways. But being an athlete changes all that.
That being said, I will say the it's only beneficial until you get enough, which is what your need for the day. Loading up on protein will do nothing but bad things, and won't make you any bigger, just like loading up on more carbs than you need.
