been goin at it pretty hard for quite some time now and I am getting little nagging injuries to my elbows. When i hit the pads with a left hook my elbow feels like almost a shock going through, not tremendously painful but makes me think twice about bringing the heat. Right will hurt after about 50% of my heavy bag workouts as well. My question is this are these just nagging little injuries that I should continue to work through or is it going to continue to get worse and become more painful down the road and perhaps put an end to my boxing days. My feeling is that my body is just still getting used to the everyday trauma and will eventually find a way to deal with it. I know this is not an exact question but did anyone experience this when they started getting serious, goin hard and really pushing it?

How do you throw your hook? thumb up or in? if it's thumb in that could cause stress to your elbow I believe. Right now my elbows are hurting like hell as well. I've been doing a lot of sparing with tall guys who tie me up. I think the key here is for you to take anti-inflamitories ( aleve preferably ) and rest. By rest I mean do less. Your elbows will heal and develop and become stronger. but if you push it everyday they will take a lot longer to get there. I know it's hard to wait for you body to catch up but it's pay off if you do.

Ok I hate this I know what is wrong and it have to do with you ened to take a little time off a get a hold a hold of some rubber band and a Muscle Stim unit. Your Tendons are weak and are letting you elbow move to much strenth those then go back to slugging alway. If you need me to clear anything up just pm me PEACE.

forums are not a good place to get exact information on most problems. you can get some ideas to check into however.

couple of questions:

- do you warm up before hitting the bag or pads(especially the arms?) i'm talking about warming up, not stretching.

- have you tried varying the angle(of lower and upper arm) at which you punch?

- as mentioned, you may want to strengthen your tendons regardless if it's the problem or not.

i am not sure of the rubber band workout. you could simply hold a push up pose. from there, you can also check out where the problem may be. there should be no stress holding the push up.

I do warm up but dont really stretch. I have not tried varying the angle but will. Their really is no pain when i do the isolated push up but i will do them a little more to strengthen. Thank you for the help.

I have never heard of elbow problems associated with a hook. Do you have a peculiar way of throwing the hook? Perhaps there is an injury or a defect in your anatomy? Sometimes young boxers throw full extension punches with a lateral snap which can sometimes produce stress on the elbow. This can be corrected by straightening the trajectory of the punch and not lifting the elbow. Not sure what to do with your particular problem. Do you know any physicians who specialize in sports medicine?

No, I do not know any docs at all. I thought it was strange as well. It as almost as if my elbow and tendons and such cant handle the impact. I lifted heavy weights for awhile and maybe my muscles are stronger than my tendons and ligaments..hmmm reaching here i know

Actually you aren't reaching. Muscle tissue builds faster than tendons or ligaments. This problem is well documented and written up in various medical journals. As to whether your prior weight lifting experience is at the bottom of the problem or it is something else will probably require a some expensive medical advice to diagnose. Make sure you find the right people. Your family doctor probably doesn't have this kind of knowledge.

Hey, here is my revised opinion. I think each time you step up your training your going to find some part of your body is pissed off. Whether it's shin splints, ****ed up elbows or whatever.
I remember now that I got pain in my elbow when I first started doing a lot of shadow boxing and heavy bag work ( probably was over extending. ) Now my elbows hurt like hell! I've been sparing big tall guys and they block with there forarms and smother my punches and all sorts of **** and it's ****ing killing my arms and especially my elbows. I had to stop of a few seconds last night because my elbow hurt so much. I think I was about to throw a jab but he was landing something on my fore arm and that explosive movement which was completely stifeled hurt like hell.
Anyway, I think this is something some people just go through and if you step it down for a bit then you'll come out stronger once it's healed.
