7-FOOT-3 IMPORT JUST TOO MUCH FOR NATS AS SMC-RP BOWS TO IRAN
But Coach Chot remains optimistic, says Pinoys passed initial test
Monday, 14 May 2007
TEHRAN, Iran The San Miguel-RP Team lost to Iran 88-101 Sunday, but coach Chot Reyes maintains more positive things are in store for the Nationals in the 18th FIBA Asia Champions Cup at the Azadi Sports Complex here.
"We have yet to play our best while they (Iranians) played as well as they can play," said Reyes after the loss that spoiled the Nationals' debut in the eight-nation tournament known as Asia's premier club championship.
"Still, I think our guys did pretty well, considering two of our main players in Mark (Caguioa) and Danny (Seigle) haven't played in an international competition before. This being our first international competition as a team, we viewed this as an initial test of our focus, energy and teamwork and although we lost I think the team passed," he added.
It's now a matter of bouncing back and the Nationals can do that Monday against the Astana Tigers of Kazakhstan in a game set at 8:45 p.m. (1:15 a.m. Tuesday, Manila time).
The Kazakhs themselves have rebounded from a 70-94 loss to Syria's Al Jalaa last Saturday by handily beating Bahrain's Al Musarraq 96-74 Sunday.
"Kazakhstan is an entirely different challenge. They have two Russian imports and though they are tall, they are mobile. Also, their wingmen have found their touch after struggling against Syria," said Reyes.
"But the real challenge is how our boys react after that loss to Iran. Ganyan talaga sa international competitions, you don't have much time to adjust. Again, our focus, energy and teamwork will be tested."
Besides, Kazakhstan does not have a really hulking giant like Iran's, one who proved to be as lethal as feared and, combined with the other perks for being host, propped the Iranians into dominating the match from the start and into their second straight win in Group B.
Joseph Garth, who proved to be a 7-foot-3, 330-lb behemoth from the Dominican Republic, had 39 points and 12 rebounds to lead the hosts' Saba Battery Club to the follow up to its 78-48 manhandling of Bahrain on Saturday.
Garth was so dominating with his overall inside presence that RP big men Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi and Enrico Villanueva were virtually powerless in containing him and all had aches and pains to show for their futile efforts.
"I'm the biggest guy in the PBA and I've never ever before had to hold off somebody with two hands," said the 6'9, 260-lb Taulava.
"He hurt my (right) shoulder on his first spin against me," said Pennisi, a known bruiser for Red Bull. "So the next time up, I gave him a hard slap and it's my whole arm that stung. I go, 'Oh, I'm sorry' and he just brushes it off like a fly."
But like Reyes, Taulava remains upbeat his team will accomplish its ultimate mission of doing well here and using the experience as springboard for next week's SEABA tilt and July's FIBA Asia championship.
"They're not gonna have somebody that big, that strong, that solid in the FIBA Asia," said the Talk N text center.
Dondon Hontiveros had 23 points and Caguioa 19 for the Nationals, who came out tight but flashed some of their fiery form in the second half to make a game of
it. That charge was only a spark, however.
In all, it was Garth who was the biggest difference, with his mini-hooks and backboard support-bending dunks. He also caused many of the Nationals to change and miss their shots and forced them to double team, leaving the Iranians' other shooters with brief open looks that were often enough.
Garth's soft hands made him 15-for-17 from the field and 9-for-11 from the stripe with 10 of his points coming after the Filipinos have whittled what was a 51-36 Saba lead to just 52-56.
Caguioa scored eight points, including a twisting shot, and Hontiveros six in that surge that fanned the hopes of the few Filipino supporters here that included some embassy officials led by consul Renato Duenas.
Then Garth simply took over. His three-point play capped a 19-7 run that gave Iran a 75-59 spread and his similar play stretched the difference to 91-73, only 3:26 left in the game.
The scores:
Iran 101 Garth 39, S. Bahrami 17, Nzafat 16, A. Bahrami 9, Muoneke 9, A***h 8, Afradi 2, Veisi 1.
San Miguel-RP 88 Hontiveros 23, Caguioa 19, Pennisi 13, De Ocampo 7, Raymundo 6, Taulava 5, Ritualo 3, Alapag 2, Dela Cruz 2, Villanueva 2, Helterbrand 0.
Quarters: 32-25; 51-38; 78-64; 101-88.

Dapat umuwi muna sila at palitan ang line up! pweh!

i am not giving up just yet, practice pa, at kung may mga injuries dapat may pamalit sila kaagad...
I am sure walang problema sa SEABA, sa Asian qualifier lang ang pahirapan, pero i am expecting at the LEAST a good showing...
Hustle and 100% effort plus tandem with Helter & Caguioa sana.
James Yap i think should have been there to provide athleticism and fire power. forget Kris!
A healthy Erik Menk could have also made a difference.
Sunday Salvacion's outside sniping and Tubid's speed i'm sure would also confuse opponents.
watyathink!

JOM'S 05-19-2007, 02:53 AM tingin ko dapat may core yung team ng outside shooters, i remember noong bata pa ko RP NCC Team, okey meron silang tatlong naturalized players pero it was the locals that really came out during the clutches...
JOM'S 05-19-2007, 05:45 AM good news and bad news ...
nanalo RP Team sa Quarters againts Lebanon pero they have to face Syria in the Semis ...
kailangan pakita nila puso nila dito, dominating bigmen both offensively and defensively ang pambato ng Syria, kailangan mag click ng mga shooters...
Papa Ace 05-20-2007, 10:23 AM SMC-RP SHOCKS LEBANON, ADVANCES TO SEMIS
Sunday, 20 May 2007
TEHRAN, Iran San Miguel-RP Team surprised heavy favorite Blue Star of Lebanon 94-83 Friday to crash the semifinals of the 18th FIBA Asia Champions Cup at the Azadi Stadium here.
The Nationals shone on both ends of the floor for majority of the game to pull off the big shocker and extend their magical ride in the tournament that was supposed to be a mere learning process for higher goals ahead.
Instead of just the quirks and nuances of international play they have so far learned and seemingly adjusted to, the Nationals can now even make the finals here, and all because of displaying a trait common to all Filipinos.
"We were playing our fifth game in five days and lacking one player (injured Tony dela Cruz), yet we
found a way to win. All of these are the result of our fighting heart," said RP coach Chot Reyes.
Mark Caguioa's 25 points led four other Nationals in double figures but the fiery offensive touch was not
the only factor that played a big role in the win.
Dondon Hontiveros, Caguioa and Danny Seigle anchored the defense on Blue Star's explosive import William Pippen while Kerby Raymundo, Rico Villanueva and Ranidel de Ocampo alternated on stifling the Lebanese's most feared player, Fadi El Khatib.
Khatib still wound up with gamehighs of 28 points and 10 rebounds but his impact was only felt during the
third quarter and considered inconsequential in the last. Pippen, meanwhile, was held to just eight
points, 17 less than his tournament average.
As a direct result, the Nationals led by as many as 18 points before repeatedly quashing the Lebanese's
uprisings in the second half.
PBA commissioner Noli Eala, who, together with Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director
nominee Patrick Gregorio, just before noon Friday, was impressed no end by the way the Nationals handled the generally taller, heftier Lebanese.
"I like the energy of our players. They also played with so much heart and a lot of pride," said Eala.
"Now, they're achieving things that were desired but not expected. At this point, everything is gravy."
The Nationals and Syria's Al Jalaa, a 102-79 winner over lowly Young Cagers of India also Friday collide in a semis game set at 8:45 p.m. Saturday (1:15 a.m., Manila time).
The other semis pairing pits early qualifier Saba Battery of Iran and Qatar's Al Rayyan.
The Syrians, led by a shotblocking demon in Bernard Jons, co-import Julious Nwosu and three players of Brazilian origin, beat San Miguel-RP, 114-80, the first time they met in group play eliminations last Tuesday.
Yet Reyes said anything is possible, especially if the drive is maintained by his charges, who lost their first three games but still beat a Lebanese team that emerged unscathed from the three-team Group A.
"Our boys came to this game not concerned at the form charts but looking to win," said Reyes.
After being held to just two points by Raymundo in the first quarter, Khatib scattered 13 points in the third to lead a searing comeback that whittled the Nationals' 57-39 halftime lead to just 65-63.
The Lebanese rally was helped along by Nationals Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi and Raymundo riding the bench for incurring, one after the other, a fourth foul. Also, Seigle suffered a slight groin pull at the 7:24 mark and he had to be taken out.
But Hontiveros drained a triple and Jayjay Helterbrand converted a fastbreak layup off his own steal to make it a 70-63 count heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Taulava was offended when his former Talk N Text consultant and current Blue Star coach Maz Trakh ordered a single coverage on him and De Ocampo also had a hot hand. They showed it.
Taulava scattered six points and De Ocampo capped a 4-for-5 shooting from three-point-land by booming in two triples, stretching the Nationals' lead to 85-71 that proved to be safe enough going into the last 4:21 of play.
The loss dropped Lebanon to the battles for placings, all after being forced to a listless start and the Nationals' 35-for-75 clip from the floor, including 15-for-31 from beyond the arc.
"This is the first time in which we shot really well and it's all because of our executions and ball
movement," noted Reyes.
Guard Rony Fahed, a Lebanese national player like Khatib, Bassem Balaa and Roy Samaha, scored 22 points, 17 during the first quarter that proved to be the only bright spot for Blue Star.
Caguioa was a veritable dervish, joining hands with Jimmy Alapag and Pennisi in dealing the big blows that enabled the Nationals to take the first quarter 27-26.
The lead steadily grew when Seigle, De Ocampo, Hontiveros and Helterbrand joined in, but it was
Villanueva's two slam dunks that highlighted the Nationals' surge to the 18-point halftime bulge that the Lebanese spent valuable energy in trying to overcome.

yung mga parokyano dyan ng PBA, shed some light :D
IMO si james yap good option for outside jumpers pero mas gusto ko laro nya nung amatuer pa cya... hayup sa shooting... nung nag PBA na medyo nawala yung shotting touch... nabansagan pa ngang next caidic yan di ba???
pero i agree with miron, since nag shine si james yap sa amateur ranks, sigurado laking tulong din yan sa national team... dapat nga si arwind kasama...

JOM'S 05-22-2007, 03:26 AM 70 million pala budget nila dyan, is it worth it? are we just dreaming or hallucinating na makapasok sa olympics? parang ganun nga ah.
saan galing bro yung 70M ??
tingin ko hindi naman hindi halucination tol, kasi tinatalo natin ang qatar at lebanon, nag place sila 2 & 3 sa Asia and even represented themselves well at the world championship...
target natin is to qualify for the olympics may nabasa ako na we are targeting a medal (so at least 3rd place) to secure a spot in the olympics ... so tatlo ba talaga kukunin sa ASIA??
not to mention may nabasa rin ako na China B team lang ipapadala sa isang basketball forum na naligaw ako kakahanap ng results nung ASIAN Cup (lol) nila sa qualifier ...
Papa Ace 05-22-2007, 04:04 AM pag nagkataon naka-pasok tayo sa olympics and lowest seed tayo baka first game natin ang US team (highest seed) kagad.... yessssssssssssss :D

seeing RP Team playing against the US Team (NBA Stars) in the Olympics!!
kapag nangyari yan para sa akin satisfied nako sa program ng National Team natin and we can only improve along the way kapag na maintain natin yan...
AIR_KENG 05-22-2007, 12:04 PM haay, not a good sight to see pero sabi nga ni chot, this tournament's gaol is not to win, but to get used to international play...
