Joe was very popular. He drew big crowds when he fought Tillis, Bey and Page in Sydney. I met him a couple of times and he was a real gentleman. A gentle giant away from the ring and still very much admired as a good bloke.

me too, I really just remember the end of his career. I Do know that Brits never forgave him for winning a dodgy decision against Henry Cooper though, which is just dumb.:cool:

He was originally from Austria or Hungary if memory serves.

Just checked he was Hungarian, who emigrated to England as a child. I found a Bugner quote regarding Russell Crowe as well. Bugner was dropped part way through the project(Cinderella man as advisor), which prompted him to call Crowe, “a gutless worm and [sic] f*****g girl”

Bugner has always stepped on alot of toes and lost alot of money in a failed Australian Vineyard which prompted a 1990s Comeback.

crazy dude. i remember reading in this discus thrower's biography that joe bugner demanded entry into a commonwealth games trial talked up how he was going to dominate the sport blitz the other aussies etc. came in and threw about half the qualifying distance. interesting character.

I remember the Bruno fight, to be honest it was a joke, Joe was way too old and Bruno used him as a punchbag!

On memory he was late 30s when he started his comeback. Speed was never his thing, neither was power! Frank Bruno made him look like a very old man!

He did beat some pretty good US fighters in his comeback.
Pretty impressive for his age.

From what I remember, he was popular & very respected over here.
Did tend to go on a bit in his 2nd comeback, trying to get a match with Big George though, which got a little annoying.
