View Full Version : World Strongest Man
JasonLeonardOBE 02-13-2003, 08:17 PM ...isn't me.
But do any of you people follow the yearly competitions?
My friend is a rep for a power tool company(DeWalt) and they sponsor a WSM competitor, Hugo Girard. He got me a signed photo from him and from then on I was hooked.
http://www.hugogirard.com/photos/99.jpg
Any of you have a favorite competitor or kind of lift. Any thought at all on the subject?
Apart from Hugo Girard I'm a fan of some of the older guys like Jan Pal Sigmarson(RIP), Gerrit Badenhorst, Felmming Rasmussen and of course Kaz.
Some of the new guys I like are Gregor Edmunds and J.Virtanen.
My favorite events/lifts are the overhead log/whatever presses, the car deadlifts and and the timed car gripping thing.
And my favorit color is red.:crazy2:
LukeDothSucketh 02-13-2003, 08:18 PM I think his name is Magnus Samulson, the guy that won twice ina row. He's a tough bastard.
JasonLeonardOBE 02-13-2003, 08:26 PM Yes Samuleson is a beast. He broke an australian guy's arm in an armwrestling event.
You know his "little" brother has trained some BJJ with the Gracies?
zioxoiz 02-13-2003, 08:27 PM Didnt Mark Henry win one of those?
LukeDothSucketh 02-13-2003, 08:27 PM that's awesome, he a beast like his older bro?
JasonLeonardOBE 02-13-2003, 08:31 PM Xai: I don't think Mark Henry won specifically in the IFSA competitions.
Luke: His brother is about two inchs shorter and not quite as strong. He aslo has really long hair. I guess he`s the rebel in the family lol.
seldomTap 02-13-2003, 08:36 PM Mark Henry won something similar to that.
Those guys are amazing...it is funny though to think that one day they were sitting around at the gym thinking "Hmm...I am a pretty strong guy, I wonder if I can find a competitiopn where my ability to lift a car or pull a jumbo jet will come in handy?"
The guy that won the Australian one a couple of years ago does BJJ in Melbourne
LukeDothSucketh 02-13-2003, 08:37 PM I wouldn't grapple him.
JasonLeonardOBE 02-13-2003, 08:47 PM Jeez you do have to wonder how they came to the sport indeed.
What I find amazing is their grip strength. I think even people who are recreational lifters have no idea of the strain of holding 350lbs in ONE HAND(farmers walk)! How one goes about working up to that kind of weight is beyond me.
Seldom you know Gerrit Badenhorst the "Bull from Bloemfontain", a South African, played Springbok A rugby? Guess what position lol.
The Jake 02-13-2003, 08:54 PM Jan Pal Sigmarson was one of my favorites.... there was another guy... Magnus? Or something like that... can't remember his name... been awhile...

Magnus Ver Magnusson maybe? Won 3 times I think. Every year he brings his Icelandic wife "Brindis" to the competitions to support him. Very pleasing to the eye...:ghost:
handjobs4dollars 02-13-2003, 09:13 PM I'm the world strongest man. I only got tapped twice in 2 hours tonight. One in a freestyle sort of match with no punches to the head. I lost by neck crank. Then in a grappling match I tapped to an armbar. But man I owned him like 5 times already.
The Jake 02-13-2003, 09:15 PM Magnus Ver Magnusson - that's him. He's my favorite. :)
Never seen his wife though.

Well I can carry around 100lbs without too much of a worry... I'd go heavier but we don't heavier dumbbells where I train.
Grip strength is where most lifters fail IMHO.... I'm very conscious it's a weakness of mine so I always try and train my grip. I gotta try and get one of those Captain Crunch (grip cruncher) thingies... the Americans have this awesomeone with variable tension.... I forget the name.

LukeDothSucketh 02-13-2003, 09:26 PM his wife is a babe.

Wing? Fullback??
BAHAHAHAHAHA....the SPringboks always have freaky big front rowers
JasonLeonardOBE 02-13-2003, 09:56 PM Tried to find pics of Brindis but to no avail. Just keep your eye open next time you come across a WSM rerun.
With all due respect The Jake holding 100lbs standing still doing shrugs or what not and carrying 350lbs in each hand for 100 feet are worlds apart.
Seldom if you ever catch an old WSM broadcast (mid 90s I would think) you can catch Badenhorst almost cold-**** Heinz Ollesch(A big German guy) in the face after a lift. Scary moment. Supposedly Ollesch had called Badenhorst a liar and a braggart and said Badenhorst could not press 393(I think) over his head. Badenhorst managed the lift with ease and then walked towards Ollesch in a threatening manner. Would not want to have to seperate two guys that size.
seldomTap 02-13-2003, 10:17 PM Why seperate them...let the big guys swing I say! Would have made sensational viewing!!
393 is a ****load of weight to be mil pressing...thst is insane

****en oath I agree! All I was saying is that if I can carry 100lbs without too much worry, 300 sounds quite reasonable (I honestly think I could do 150-200 in each hand). I shrug a lot more than 100lbs btw....
I'd like to know what the world record is for farmer walks....

Fair enough. I myself a have a girls grip strength so that's why I am so impressed by these guys basically being able to carry an NFL lineman in each hand.
The Jake on theIFSA site they say the record is 175kg for 39 meters in 2001.
http://www.ifsastrongestman.com/
Seldom when Badenhorst did it he really did not look like he was pushing himself that much. I see on the IFSA website that Svend Karlsen has the mil. press record at 185kgs. Hugo Girard pressed 125kgs during a minute for 18 reps.
Magnus and the Stump....lol

You mean Stumpy Raines?
That guy in his own way is a phenom. His arms are so short he had to use a piece of string or something to able to hold that big stone they have to carry around.
Shame he doesn't play rugby it would be hard to get under a 5'4" 270lbs guy like him in a scrum.:)
They said he was 5'3 yesterday...lol
He reminds me of the super hero "Puck"

Dunno if I really want to think about him wearing tights.:ghost:
lightweight 02-14-2003, 11:46 AM I like the smaller guys like Jouko Ahola, and the last guy that won Pdinoufsky(sp?). But Ahola is my all time favorite.

What is your favorite events. I like when they carry the africa stone or those stone balls
WoHop 02-14-2003, 12:05 PM firetruck pull
rigid 02-14-2003, 12:25 PM ahola is cool.magnus ver magnuson is a legend in the sport.those comp's are cool to watch.stumpy is cool too.the dutch always dominate that competition.they have for years.what gets me is ver magnusondoes not look that big.
sometimes on espn2, they play comps from the 70's.i like watching cause lou ferigno and tony atlas is in a lot of them.ferigno always had the most cut/ripped muscles but i don't think i ever saw him win one of those.

lightweight 02-14-2003, 04:35 PM I like the Atlas stones the best.

GhosT^x0 02-14-2003, 06:50 PM Fleming Rasmussen is a ****in beast.

That he is. He is also a very laidback guy. One year they held the competiton in Vegas and they had this event where they had the guys hold onto to a glass container in each hand filled with 1 dollar coins. Dunno how much they weighed but looked heavy enough.
All the other competitors brought some fancy equipement to do the event like wristwraps, chalk and so forth. After these guys have their turn on comes big Fleming wearing a t-shirt and flipflops who goes on to have the best time and winning the event all the while chewing gum.:lol2:
He kind of had this "what`s the big deal?" look after he was done.
The Jake 02-14-2003, 11:57 PM I'm thinking of training up and trying for some of these comps. I know I'm no where near endangering any world records but I'd like to compete, and see how I do. But I need to find someone that specialises in powerlifting and strong man comps. The training these guys do is very very different to anything else I've ever seen.
As for the length of my gym, **** - not 200ft, but I do laps up and down and around equipment. The fact I have to turn and pivot a lot obviously cuts down distance but I still think I could do ok for some of these comps. SeldomTap OTOH, would be just ****en scary IMHO....
- The Jake
seldomTap 02-15-2003, 12:03 AM No...I would suck at these things...although I once carried two 50lbs jerry cans full ofm fuel for 12 kilometres.
I can mil press 110kg for about 7 reps now so if that counted I could be the man!
I don't eat enough and can't afford to get tailor made cothes like the behemoths that compete in these things either
The Jake 02-15-2003, 12:22 AM JLOBE above just mentioned some guy Rasmussen who turned up to a meet in flip flops (aka. thongs in aussie speak). So if he can do it, I'm pretty sure u could :) :) :)
2x 50lb for 12kms.... wtf? OUCH.... how long did that take ya??
- The Jake
handjobs4dollars 02-15-2003, 12:40 AM Jake I don't want to see those guys in thongs.

About an hour and a half. I had a pack on as well...was when I was in the Army I did this. Had some bastard riding my ass the whole way, I was the newbie at the time.
G-Man, thongs down here are things you wear on your feet. The things you are thinking of (the ones your Ma left at my place yesterday) are called g-strings down here or anal dental floss

I call buls**** on "the army made me do it" part.
He did i cuz his old lady told him to. That "bastard" riding his ass all along the way was his feeling of embarassment with being so thorougly whipped.
Read you like a book Oz boy.
seldomTap 02-16-2003, 12:01 AM I am transparent to you JLOBE!
