Alot of times you'll get debates on which is better for MMA, a ring or a cage. Why not use a mat? Make it a little bigger than a ring, maybe 30' by 30'. I think it would be good because it would eliminate any advantages being gained by the ring or cage. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

I'm been in a ring, and i've been on a matt. not yet a cage. but soon.

though if i was in the position i was in in the ring in a cage i'd of had a lot less freedom to do what i wanted had i been against it.

Also, like in wrestling and other martial arts there would be a lot of restarts due to fighters getting pushed off the mat area.
