View Full Version : Sean Sherk Responds to Floyd Mayweather

RandomSpeak.com: Floyd Mayweather, Jr. came out the last couple weeks completely bashing the UFC and stating that any boxer would demolish a UFC fighter in the cage. Dana White (UFC President) came back at Mayweather and named you as the guy who he'd put Mayweather up against, and that you would handle him no problem. What are your thoughts on the whole situation?
Sean Sherk: Well, you know honestly in a boxing match, of course he'd beat me in a boxing match. In an MMA fight, he would be in for a beating. I mean, he's not going to knock me out with one punch; I've got a hard head and have been boxing for 13 years so it's not like I don't know how to box. So, he'd have to land a lot of punches to stop me from taking him down, and me being one of the best wrestlers in the sport, there's no way he could stop me from taking him down.
I don't think that fight would last longer than a minute, to be honest with you. And I don't think he should be talking about something that he can't back up, because I'll fight him tomorrow. I literally would, if they called and asked me to fight Floyd Mayweather, Jr. tomorrow, it's done. He's not going to fight me though, and he's just running his mouth. I don't really respect that a whole lot.

2swell k-wells 04-28-2007, 09:12 PM haha I luv it...Sean Sherk would most likely take the fight to the ground and sub him or GnP him or just do anything to him..have his way cause Sherk wont last standing up...The challenge is right there...lets wait for mayweather to respond...he better not be just running his mouth cause i would love to see this go down.
this is ****ing stupid, Floyd is a boxer, mma is a different sport
haha Sherk thinks he could take punches from Floyd wearing those little gloves? what a joke
Ranger2408 04-29-2007, 12:54 AM yeah but the hands man, the hands
Ofcourse Sherk would win because of grappling but man! some of these mma guys are really getting gassed in the head when it comes to their striking skills. It would be funny if he got into a match with Mayweather, assumed he had all the time in the world to take it to the ground, and then got a rude awakening 30 seconds into the fight when he actually tried to exchange with Mayweather. He would have to fight that match ala Royce gracie UFC 1 style, or he wouldn't make it out of there. No time to procrastinate. What throws Mayweather off is the fact that mma guys now stand on thier feet alot because they know they are evenly matched with each other in striking. Mayweather assumes he would get the same chance. Boxers weren't really saying this kind of stuff when the UFC first started and Gracie was taking people down within ten seconds of the start of the fight. They knew they couldn't hang with that.
Soundtraveler 04-29-2007, 08:10 AM While the general opinion is that a boxer would do well while the fighters are on their feet, what people don't take into consideration is -- distance. The distance between fighters in boxing is totaly different than the distance in MMA, even when there are two "strikers" involved. A fighter used to boxing is not going to find his range in an MMA fight, and would most likely catch a kick to the head, before he ever gets within punching range....
1bad65 04-29-2007, 12:29 PM The last 2 posts are good ones. The intelligent thing an MMA guy would do against someone with excellent hands is not too difficult to see. They would hang at a distance just out of punching range. Then you just need that one shot to close the distance and get the takedown or a clinch. The amount of time they would spend in punching range is just a split second.
2swell k-wells 04-29-2007, 12:51 PM And from seeing how fast and strong Sherk is he will take mayweather down at will. Sherk would throw them bows, punches then the ref would have to step in. Im gonna post this on the boxing forum see what those guys say about this:D haha ;)
2swell k-wells 04-29-2007, 01:44 PM Check out this HL video I found on dailymotion of Sean Sherk...pretty cool vid

Personally, what I have used against some boxers I have fought is:
1) Two inches above the kneecap snap kicks sometimes using a barrage of them at once.
2) After a few sessions of those, not only will his ability to sprawl from possible takedowns diminish, but generally he'll be looking to close the range trying to clench.
3) At that point the takedown comes to you and it's over.
That's what I have found to work well (if the guy isn't really explosive), especially since most are expecting a shoot.

You remember the boxer in one of the first UFC's who went in the the cage with boxing gloves on? That was classic. The whole two different sports aspect is spot on. It's like what if Michael Jordan tried to play professional baseball? Oh wait, that happened.
Organik 04-30-2007, 12:02 AM I dont see why people are actually discussing this fight seriously, Mayweather is arrogant and is just running his mouth.
