Can anyone fill me in on how this works? Anything about the process or your experiences would be helpful. Did you go through a trainer? Have you done golden gloves or some other tournament format? When did you weigh in? How many people were watching? Did you have to pay to do it? Etc. etc.
Any info on your experiences with this would be appreciated, especially if you've done it in the US... ideally the east coast/ VA.

I almost fought April 14th. The owner of the gym was putting an amateur boxing card together to be at the gym. I put my name on the list and they said they'd find out if they had an opponent for me at the weigh in which was the morning of the card. I didnt go through the trainer, but thats the reason why I didnt fight because I didnt have a trainer and there was no one to work my corner.

I've had quite a few amateur fights. Basically you would talk to your trainer about getting a fight. Chances are your first fight would not be at a tournament, it would just be a match bout at a club show. This basically means that your trainer would talk to a trainer from another boxing club and find an opponent where your trainer and the other guys trainer both agree that it is a reasonable fight. It would probably be against another guy in his first fight. You won't have to pay anything to do the fight. Of course if you aren't registered with USA Boxing yet you will have to pay a bit for registration and probably have to pay to have a medical done which is part of the registration process. The weigh in for a match bout would happen a couple of hours or so before the show starts. In amateur the weigh-ins are always the day of the fight, in tournaments they are in the morning usually, evening for match fights.
In my first fight there were actually a few hundred people watching, about 400-500. It was in an area where they put on pretty big shows. In amateur boxing shows there are typically a lot less people. About 100-200 watching maybe.
Basically you just need to talk to your coach and go from there, but this should give you an idea of what to expect.

Thanks for the info. What part of the us are you in? Do these clubs advertise for those sorts of bouts? I haven't ever seen something like that advertised around here.

I'm actually in Canada but I've fought in the US and it works the same way. Just talk to a coach and go from there. A coach from your gym will know the local system. You might not see cards advertised very much.

Headgear should most likely be provided by your trainer, gloves too. You can wear any colors you like.
May 12- The World Awaits. :boxing:
Good luck.

May 12 is somewhat my 'official' debut as well, the last guy I was meant to fight didn't bring his blood tests so I win by default!
