ENGLAND World Cup winner Alan Ball died of a heart attack last night.

The Farnworth-born footballer and youngest member of the side that lifted the trophy at Wembley in 1966 died after watching Manchester United's European Championship semi-final tie with AC Milan.

Jimmy Ball his brother said: "I was talking to him last night just after the football and he was in great form. We were talking about (Paul) Scholes's pass.

"And then I got a phone call in the middle of the night. It's unbelievable and very, very sad."

The midfielder won 72 caps for his country in a 10-year England career and starred for both Everton and Arsenal.

RIP Alan:sad2:

He also starred for Southampton and lived near the city up until his death.

He was well respected down here despite his managerial stints with a certain "football" club.

RIP Alan Ball.

R.I.P Great football, the youngest guy in the England team that won the World Cup and he's died :nonono:

I remember what Shanks said about Ball moving to Everton instead of us:

"Don't worry, at least you'll be able to play close to a great team"

Sad day for football.
