im guessing you will all say the bag? all my hooks are alright apart from left hook to the head...its ****e lol i have trouble doing it

mitt work and shadow boxing.Also,look at a boxer that throws a good left hook,and see how he does it.Then turn it into your style.Also working your hips side to side can help also.

you know, chop wood like chop with a ****ing axe.

find a nice tree not too big, chop it down (not on neighbors property...) very good for power hooks. very, very good exercise for punch training.

then once the tree is on the ground you chop at the log while it's on the ground, hard. wear gloves. that will hone your uppercut power moreso than your hook power but still, it's important to work the log on the ground, for your lead hook. Cuz just chopping at a tree normally is working your power hook.

Was it Marciano that was a logger? Damn, can't remember who now, Dempsey? One of the classic fighters who threw freighttrains out of his fists used to be a logger, I know that much...

At work,we use sledgehammers to break down crates,I love doin that ****,its a great workout.They always call me to do it,and I'm happy to do it.ahaha.

a lot of ppl say a good hook comes out of the cradle with you :P

but to improve it. theres different ways

u can practice a loading up, big haymaker hook

u can practice the quick jumping in sharp hook

or u can practice the counter hook

either way they all involve leaning for the load up, and releasing with a snap action.

u gotta move that body with it, put ur shoulder into it, and dig in there with ur hip. and just burst ur energy in that left hook. make it snap.

The only way to find out if you're making any progress, is if you get someone w/ a trained eye to critique you. Practice your power punches on the heavybag, and like someone else posted, chopping wood is a great alternative, or maybe buy a medicine ball(preferably an oversized one) and from your fighting stance throw it up against a wall and as soon as it comes back to you, throw it again. When doing mittwork, I like to use a 3-4 punch combo, it goes something like this... if you have a conventional stance you start it off w/ a left jab, left hook to the head, left uppercut, and finish it off w/ a left hook to the body.

If you fight tall most of your lefthooks will be aimed at the head, if you fight small then your prime target is the body. Although the hook has a "hooked" trajectory, it should always go the shortest way there and the shortest way back, like all punches. Some trainers will tell you to lift the elbow so that the arm is horizontal. This is inefficient and incorrect.

Ya? My trainer doesn't bust my balls about it or anything, but every now and then, he'll tell me to get my elbow horizontal.

the best way to develope any punch is shadow boxing. Thats what its for, working on your technique.

Also a horizontal elbow is really imporant if you want to get any sort of power behind your hook, but it makes your hooks slow. I personaly prefer a quicker slaping james toney type hook.

well the second day i was in boxing i broke a knuckle in my right hand. so id throw hooks and jabs all day at the bag, all friggin day. i quickly developed a sledgehammer left hand(im a heavy puncher anyway). basically practice it specifically, and do it a lot. if you threw lefthooks and the bag for an hour a day for one week making sure to have good technique, youd be doing a lot better by the end of the week haha.

Takes alot more then a week.haha,the body tends to forget.Thats why u have to drill it in for months and years. But I get what your saying.
