View Full Version : Limey League - Top 15 British Bands of all time?
MickyHatton 04-23-2007, 06:37 AM 1. The Beatles - Changed music and popular culture- For me Revolver is the greatest piece of music work ever created.
2. Oasis - Evolved the Beatle theme and in some ways improved it (Definitely Maybe stands out for me)
3. Queen - Unique, expressive and our now appreciated for what they were and sadly missed!
4. The Stone Roses - the album of the same name affected my teenage years and has left a imprint on me.
5. The Rolling Stones - Outside of the usual PR circle, they where bold, brash and typically British. (Stick Fingers for me their best work)
6. Pink Floyd - Didn't get it until I was much older, do now!
7. Joy Division - Pioneered the electric sound, would have risen higher if Ian Curtis had lived.
8. The Kinks - Another member of the Rock Invasion of the States, unique sound, dark vocals of the Davies brothers, inspired many of the later great bands.
9. The Sex Pistols - Spawned a music and cultural revolution.
10. The Who - Again similar to many above, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, Pete Townsend and John Entwistle would grace and improve any of the above bands IMO.
11. The Verve - Urban Hymns.
12. The Police - Again for me they have got better as I have gotten older.
13. Madness - Absolutely loved them.
14. UB40 - Affected my life at a difficult time.
15. The La's - Had a local impact.

Bands That had Crazy charts successes..Or for a period of Time were "The Biggest bands In the World"..Bands That Pioneered Sounds and are often Imitated..Whose Riffs are sampled By todays Lame ass Hip Hopsters..Because their songs are Timeless and Still carry Relevance TODAY Regardless of their age...

Synchronicty went to Number one in 12 differnt countries including of all places Israel and Brazil.. and Knocked Micheal Jacksons Thriller out of the 1st place in both the USA and UK
7-Black Sabbath-The Most Imitated band EVER... They Litteraly Invented The heavy Metal Sound and Like the Beatles got to every good Riff before anyone else could.. Conceptionaly Brilliant
8-Radiohead -Reached The Pinnacle of being the world's Biggest band.. And then promtly self destructed..Which is why they are NOT higher up the list..But whats so amazing is when they reached the pinnacle..In a world Full for of Hip Hop and Bubble gum Pop along came a band that soundled like Nothing else and conquered the world..OK Computer is Possibly The last Great Album Ever recorded

15-Duran Duran-Like 'em or NOT.. Prolly The most influencial band Whose Effects are STILL being felt today.. The Daddies of the MTV generation... They changed the way Music was marketed ..packaged and SOLD... and amazingly some of their tunes weren't half bad...
Oasis_Lad 04-23-2007, 10:00 AM 1. The Beatles - Not just the greatest British band of all time but the greatest band the world has ever seen. No artist/artists have produced more classic albums. Their influence on all forms of music is unparalleled and they shall forever remain the greatest band of all time.
2. The Rolling Stones - much like the Beatles are the greatest band ever - The Rolling Stones are the greatest out and out rock and roll band of all time.
3. Oasis - I remember hearing Definitely Maybe when i was around 9 years old and became hooked instantly. Oasis came along when the British music scene was in a dreadful state and revived it. Not only did they change the face of music but they changed the face of Britain as a whole. Teenagers started to dress like them, to speak like them and they gave young people hope. For one brief fleeting moment it was like the 60's all over again and i ****ing loved it.
4. Queen - Freddy Mercury, anyone ? Without doubt the greatest frontman and performer the world has ever seen. Such a unique and powerful voice with tons of charisma and he had a fantastic set of musicians to back him up - Brian may is easily one of the greatest guitarists of all time, John deacon was a a master bassist and Roger Taylor is one of the best drummers you are ever likely to find.
5. The Who - Like Queen they were all amazing musicians. Some even say that Keith Moon is the greatest drummer that ever lived and the same goes for John Entwhistle on bass. Pete Townshend was a revolutionary guitarist and performer and paved the way for the likes of Angus Young from AC/DC. Then you Had Roger Daltry roaring out their hits and this made them one fantastic unit and probably the best live band there has ever been.
6. Led Zeppelin - A fantastic rock and roll band and Page and Plant were a fantastic combination.
7. Pink Floyd - There have been a few stages of Pink Floyd but i and many others think the 70's with Roger Waters and David Gilmour at the helm. The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and the mind blowing double album - The Wall were all churned out in that fabulous decade known as the 70's.
8. The Stone Roses - were huge influences on Oasis and most of the Brit-pop bands from the 90's. Their eponymous debut album is regarded by many to be the greatest debut album from any band ever.
9. The Smiths - Probably the greatest alternative rock group that Britain has ever produced. Morrisey's fantastic lyrics along with Marr's melodic driven guitar playing made for some great tunes and makes them a particular favourite of mine.
10. Radiohead - Just an absolutely sublime band. The bends and Ok Computer are two fantastic works of art.
11. The Jam - I love Paul Weller and i love the Jam.
12. The Clash - I'll take the Clash over the Sex Pistols.
13. The Verve - i have been a huge fan of the Verve since they released "A northern Soul" in 1995.
14. The Kinks - Vastly underrated and Ray Davies has to be the most overlooked songwriter of all time.
15. Joy Division - "Love Will Tear Us Apart" has to be one of the greatest songs of the last 30 years.
paul750 04-23-2007, 12:48 PM 1. The Beatles: Huge array of classic songs that were simple yet endearing. No doubt changed the face of music and the influence they had/have on music simply cannot be denied.
2. The Rolling Stones: Very much like the Beatles in terms of the impact they made. They were multi-dimensional in terms of their musical style, with a great asortment of hits. They've also stood the test of time against all odds.
3. Queen: The Band as a whole were a great band, with Brian May a great guitarist, but freddie Mercury was just on a different planet to everyone else on so many levels; a unique voice, a great showman, and surely one of the best lyricists who has ever lived.
4. The Bee Gees: These guys are perhaps the most inimitable band ever; they simply cannot be imitated. They had the most unique style of singing probably of any band or artist and match anyone in terms of the amount of great songs they have produced.
5. Status Quo: These guys prove that you don't always have to be hugely skilled to be successful and produce good songs. They simply produced very catchy songs. There's nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned.
6. Manic Street Preachers: A very diverse band with some extremely hard-hitting and often sad lyrics, sometimes with a political message behind them too. They've produced some epic songs and the political message in a musical sense is irrelevant; it's just great music.
7. Coldplay: Just lyrically and musically great, it's as simple as that. It could be classed as genius, but at the expence of sounding over-the-top. Nevertheless, a great modern day band with bags of talent.
8. UB40: A great band that blends many influences, and one which gave them a distintive style. It's great to see so many cultures in one band. A great list of songs that are very easy on the ear.
9.Oasis: I don't particularly like them as people, but they came out with two legendary albums in the 90's that took the UK by storm. They brought a sense of no nonsense working-class vibes to their music, which many people related to.
10. Simply Red: Well if it was a beauty contest, this band [Hucknall] may not make the top 1000 let alone top 15, but it's not. Many different musical influences and Hucknall has a great, rangy and captivating voice. Great list of songs.
11. Erasure: They produced an alternative type of music, I guess you could say very mellow. Produced some catchy songs. Hardly the most manly of bands, but were good at what they did.
12. The Smiths: Very dry/humorous alternative style. Great lyrically and produced some depressing yet catchy songs. Not a band for manic- depressives, but a great niche band.
13. The Lightning Seeds: Perhaps the epitome of the so-called 90's Britpop along with Pulp, Oasis, Blur etc. I've rated them better than a couple of the other bands simply because of how uplifting some of their songs are, and there's a few of them too.
14. The Verve: A couple of epic songs does no harm to this band's CV. Ashcroft is no doubt a hugly talented guy.
15. The Animals: Part of the explosion in the 60's and held their own with some good songs. ''House of The Rising Sun'' must be one of the most haunting songs ever.

Mick Hucknall 04-23-2007, 02:25 PM 1. Queen - Obvious yes. Fronted by imo the greatest entertainer of all time Freddie Mercury. I wasn't alive at the height of their popularity but it has become clear that they are a timeless band who seem to getting even more popular as time progresses. Brian May on guitar came along with just the right sound and some of his rifts make Queen what they are. Then comes John Deacon on bass who imo is the 2nd most valuable member of queen, penned many of their top hits and his rift in another one bites the dust is legendary. Lets not forget Roger Taylor on drums and what we get is the best british band of all time.

I personally think so too. I put them in there because of their first two albums, which can't be taken away from them I suppose. I don't like them as people.

MickyHatton 04-29-2007, 01:18 PM C'mon guys!
TheHoff! 04-29-2007, 06:00 PM Sorry for the delay Micky. Here are mine, in no order.
1. The Beatles – Would the Beatles be the greatest of all time if they hadnt taken drugs? I’ve got me doubts to be honest with yer…so let that be a lesson to all ye sober cunts. Get high or never reach your potential.
2. The Stone Roses – My personal favourites. I ****in love the imagery in made of stone and their debut album and John Squire’s riffs never fail to give me the horn. The fact that ‘this is the one’ is played at old trafford before every red scum game put me off them a little bit, but I still love em.
3. The Smiths – Morrissey is a bum boy after me own heart. A ****in masterful lyricist with a barnet to be proud of.
Let me get my hands
On your mamary glands
^Classic lines right there.
4. Radiohead – Innovative and completely original. I thought their first album was pretty ordinary mind (apart from Creep) but The Bends and OK Computer are classic albums…and their music videos are pretty ****in good an all.
5. Queen – Jimmy told me that if I didn’t pick Queen he’d never talk to me again, but really, Freddie Mercury was great wasn’t he…and I aint just saying that cause he’s a bum boy.
6. The Buzz****s – A punk band that produced some great pop songs. Ever fallen in love is their most well known song but orgasm addict, what do I get, everybodys happy nowadays and harmony in my head are catchy as ****.
7. Oasis – I ****in loved Oasis when I was a kid. They really encapsulated the spirit of the times and made some great songs.
8. Blur – Posh ponces but talented none the less. During their rivalry in the mid 90s with Oasis I preferred the Gallagher brothers but after that Oasis pretty much stuck to the same formula and stagnated whereas Blur evolved.
Laddie’s gonna give me hell for saying that ^.
9. The Sex Pistols – Only together for two years but changed the face of music. Their nihilism and anger invigorated british music.
10. Manic Street Preachers – Sheep shaggers but I wont hold that against them. They made some great tunes and are responsible for one of the best football chants of all time:
''If you tolerate Rix, then your children will be next''
11. The kinks – I’m reluctant to include this lot after the ****ers made a song calling alcohol a demon, but still, these lads deserve a spot.
12. The Clash – If the Sharif don’t like it he can kiss me arse. London Calling is a classic album.
13. The Verve – Richard Ashcroft may be a talented ****er but if he barged past me in the street I’d have to push the cunt down a manhole. Still, I love the orchestral sound of bittersweet symphony and the drugs don’t work is also a beautiful song.
14. The Pogues – Shane MacGowan may have his flaws but they are far outweighed by his talents. Yeah he may be an ugly cunt and half the fat yanks on this site would have a field day discussing his dental hygiene, but Shane MacGowan is undoubtably a poetic genius…and he can drink almost as much as Laddie.
15. UB40 – From glorious Birmingham just like meself. When Anorak, Jimmy and Shanus tell me the races shouldn’t mix I always think of these limey bum boys. They were a great mixture of ******s and pale faces.

Hoff, we have some serious issues to discuss.
