View Full Version : Roy Shaw or the Guv'nr Leany
CletusVanDamme 04-17-2007, 11:11 AM Who would you rather fight in a street brawl?
I think since the Guv'nr is dead I will take him on.
Just wanted to say hello to my limey breathren, with a bad joke.
Shanus 04-17-2007, 12:41 PM Lenny Mclean was just a beast, he'd give Foreman a run for his money on the street.. I'd rather fight Roy, BUT only if it was a supervised fight and stopped when it needed to be, Lenny would stop, Roy would continue smashing your face in until he saw fit.

Roy sent me a response to an email recently and it only took him like a day to respond. I was impressed.

That's cool.
Have you read both of their books? I'm going to rent another one of Lenny's books from the library soon, it's more based on his family life rather than his life story, career etc.

Not Lennys as of yet. I am going to soon. I saw a painting of him recently and it was badass.
paul750 04-17-2007, 12:56 PM Shaw and Mclean were absolute beasts on the street and would have eaten the likes of Kimbo Slice for breakfast, but to say they'd give George Foreman a run for his money on the street is going a bit far IMO. If George Foreman had bare knuckle boxing bouts or street fights, he'd not have KO's on his record, he'd probably have murders on them.
As for who was the best between Shaw and Mclean, it would appear to be a pretty hard question, but I think Shaw is hard done by because of his two losses to Mclean. Shaw started at a very late age and was really only a middleweight to begin with. He has a 10 zip pro record and only two losses otherwise, against Mclean. It seems to be the consensus that Mclean was the more likable man, where as Shaw was just an nutcase.

I had the same argument with Jimmy The Gent, Foreman wasn't unbeatable in the ring or in the street, and with somebody with as much experience as Mclean in street fighting, if anybody at all could give Foreman a good fight without gloves on, it'd be him.
Mick Hucknall 04-17-2007, 02:36 PM Roy scares me more than Lenny. But Lenny is bigger. Bartley Gorman > lenny and Roy. **** Of Shanus

Shaw and Mclean were not great boxers though; someone like Foreman, even with his raw power, still had good boxing fundamentals which is needed for the top. How are Shaw or Mclean going to outbox Foreman with their limited boxing ability? They certainly wouldn't win in a trade-off, even Joe Frazier couldn't do that. Anyone who stood with George Foreman couldn't survive, the only way he could be beaten was to be outboxed, and only the best boxers could do that.
As for a street fight, I don't think words can really describe how much damage someone like George Foreman could do with his bare hands. There's just no way anyone would have a chance with someone like that, unless they fought a different kind of fight, like taking him down etc. Mclean was knocked-out on more than one occasion, getting knocked-out by a pro heavyweight called Cliff Field who was a pro boxer at one stage, but didn't even make it to British Title level.
There's no doubt Mclean and Shaw were very tough guys on the street and had a lot of power, but to compare them to the likes of Foreman is like comparing a Ford Escort Cosworth with a Mclaren F1. If Mclean was getting knocked out by a guy like Field, then Foreman would of put him in a whole different level of hurt, but Foreman would have done that to pretty much anyone.
They were tough tough guys who would have beaten the majority of fighters, but when you're talking about the likes of Foreman, Frazier or Tyson etc, you're talking about guys who would have been too much for the likes of Shaw or Mclean.

Indeed I've read about Foremans violent teenage years. when he was 14 he was knocking out grown men and stealing their wallets. He used to literally hold guys upside down by their ankles and beat the **** out of guys to steal cash. And this was at 14 so in his 20's and 30's who knows what he coulda done.

You make a fair point, but Big George's chin wasn't made of granite, one punch from Lenny could easily send him down, especially without gloves on, did you see the size of Lenny's hands? They were monstrous.. but the same thing could happen to Lenny, all I'm saying is Lenny can't be completely ruled out, he has a punchers chance, I'm sure you've read about how many jaws he's claimed to have broken, even if he does exagerate slightly, he's still been involved in more fights than most.
And Jimmy, Bart was a fart, end of.
