A few days ago James “Lights Out” Toney appeared on Boxing Confidential Radio. For those of you who might not have been able to access the audio, here are some of the highlights from Toney’s appearance.

On UFC…

“UFC is not ready for someone like me. I am too violent.”

“If they want to make it boxer vs. UFC, if Dana White has the balls, like he does on TV, he can call Dan Goossen and we can make it happen. I will fight Randy Couture or Chuck Lindell.”

“99 percent of boxers who would go in UFC would probably get their ass whooped. But I am one percent, I never got my ass whooped.”

On His Physical Condition…

“Since the second Sam Peter fight, I took one week off and have been in the gym ever since then, everyday…I am ready to fight whenever.”

On His Return to the Ring…

“You the reporters keep talking that bull****. I am a legend, when I return, I am the one everyone wants to see…What makes me different from De La Hoya, I am not Hispanic?”

On De La Hoya…

“If De La Hoya fought in Detroit, you would have three or four thousand people in the seats, because nobody would want to see him!”

“Me I am a real person. If you meet me in public, I will talk to you anywhere, anyhow. With Oscar, you go to get through three or four people just to speak to him and when you do speak to him he is going to be half-ass.”

On Detroit Boxing…

“We started boxing…Joe Louis, Ray Robinson, Tommy Hearns, James Toney, the list goes on. If me and Chris Byrd fought in Forbes Field, we would put alteast 60 to 70,000 people in there.”

Toney would get dominated in MMA. Hes never trained for it. Some of you need to think about what you're saying. What the hell is James going to do when someone takes him down? Im not saying he wouldnt be a good MMA fighter because Im sure with the training he could have been good, but come on these guys train years and years for this. You cant expect someone who only knows hand combat to dominate a sport which uses all different types of martial arts. Thats just plain stupid. Put aside your hatred for MMA and use common sense.

With that said, James Toney is still the **** in my eyes.

This really ends all discussion about Boxing v.s. MMA.

a mixed martial artist will win in a mma fight...

Bojansky kicked Mercer in the head 1 time, Mercer turned right around, looked at the ref and said "Forget it, I quit". Went to his corner told everyone it was time to jet, he's not ready to be kicked in the side of the head by an athletic 6'6 physical specimen trained in Karate.

This is kinda simplistic, but I remember reading in a "Chinese fast wrestling" book that: Grappling beats striking, submissions beat grappling, and striking beats submissions. Just thought that was kinda interesting, and it definatly explains some of the vulnerability of boxers in MMA. When you punch you are wide open to get taken down. This is simplistic though because guys have combined striking with takedown defense with excellent results, its kinda just a generalization i guess.

A Young Tyson with CroCop like takedown defence and knowledge of the ground game would be lethal, Toney and his shoulder rolls would not.

your dreaming.. in mma toney cant jus stand there and throw bombs. He will get taken down and will have nothing to work with down there. His comment is just proof that boxing is falling, so now they have to bring up UFC...The company that is bringing the sport of boxing down.

If he would concentrate on nothing but sprawls then he would do ok...not great but ok, he would be one of those guys dana feeds to top fighters that need wins haha!

reason why i only said sprawls was cause he wont be able to work on anything else, like what was already mentioned on here "mma fighters trained for years for this sport" james toney wont have that much time. Look at butterbean 40 years old and still dont have it all, but he is smart though cause he knew MMA is bigger or is gonna be bigger than boxing.

I love watching Toney box, except his last fight was hard to watch. He is a master of his craft. But his boxing style is a HORRIBLE match up for an MMA fight. Toney uses little footwork, its all upper body movement to make guys miss, and he lays on the ropes. He would be way too easy to take down.

Man! can someone post that fight.

I like all of this with Holyfeild and Toney, it means boxing is paying more attention to MMA. The result will be that we come closer to the Ultimate fighter. MMA fans should admit that most of the striking in the UFC really sucks badly. If you get some real boxers and boxing trainers in the UFC we will really begin to see some complete fighters.

Many fighters and many MMA gyms have a boxing trainer.

Yea, Toney used to have my respect, but as soon as he started talking all that shiet and never backing it up in the ring...his charade gets old quick!

No one gives a rat's ass about him anymore. We all know he's washed up. He had his chance years ago and F'd up. Who cares about this tub of lard.

This is true, however there are certain guys that come to mind. Jeremy Williams seems to have some potential, although he hasnt fought anyone of note and has a lot of improving to do, but he is apparently a black belt in Judo and a former highschool state champ in wrestling. There are obviously certain things which cross over, particularly the fact that boxing is a component of mma. Still, it would take one hell of an athlete/fighter to find real success in both, not impossible, but it'd be a hell of an achievment. The fact that you've got olympic wrestlers finding great success in MMA but not top boxers would seem to indicate that the sport is closer to wrestling (theres also the fact that wrestlers cant earn **** for $ in their sport, though i think this is secondary).

He may fight in UFC since UFC owns the Pride contracts now, but theres nothing scheduled as far as I know, but I'm sure he will sometime.

Fedor is the top fighter in the game (at least for HW), I'm not one to say he's ubeatable by any means, but he is very solid in all aspects of the game and is basically undefeated, with just a single loss coming from a doctors stoppage on a cut in his 4th fight, and he has defeated most of the top fighters out there. I think best heavyweight fighter of all time is a fair distinction. But i gotta admit i'm waitin for him to get beat, I always was one to cheer on the underdogs.

Oh, and you can go watch him on youtube or something.
