View Full Version : FINALLY!!!!! Had my first sparring match today!!!
Animal Squabbs 04-04-2007, 03:14 AM After AALLLL these years of training myself, I finally got some sparring today. I have been askin around for sparring alot (especially now since I might be fighting on the 14th)and finally one of the trainers at my gym told me that there was some other heavyweight novice like me that I could spar today around 6:30 or 7:00. I got there at 7:00 and he told me it was too late and I was dissapointed, but kinda relieved because I had just gotten off of work a few hours before and had eaten about an hour before.
Then the trainer came up and asked if I still wanted to spar and I said yeah, then he said something about the guy being maybe too much fast (doesnt really speak english well). I said Id do it anyway. I had my camera but I didnt wanna seem like some kind of idiot asking someone to film me spar. The guy I was gonna spar looked small so I figured I cant go too hard on him since Im a heavyweight, I was planning on just practicing cutting off the ring, I wasnt worried about dodging his punches since he was smaller and I dont think I could be hurt (first mistake) and maybe working the jab. We warmed up and before we started he knelt and did a prayer in the corner which seems kinda weird for a sparring session.
We went 4 rounds. We were supposed to go 3 but the trainer threw another one in at the last minute I think to see If I could make it. The first round I came out and took the center of the ring and he didnt do much, so I started backing him up into the ropes and pitty pat flurries (soft since Im bigger)and cutting him off, he fired some shots off the ropes but I think I took that round even though my nose did start bleeding. The second round was close and could be either guys round, I was the affective aggressor backing him into the ropes and pitty patt shots while he was landing cleaner shots. Toward the end of the round he started landing more. The third round was target practice for him, I was squared up coming straight ahead ignoring his punches and he was nailing me with all kinds of shots, even started landing like 4-5 shot combos, and made me miss acouple times. The 4th I took the first half as I was chasing him around and flurrying, the last half I was kinda tired and his shots werent hurting too much but they were snapping my head around, so I basically ended up eating combos, we started putting eachother into the ropes. He caught me with a nice uppercut and it felt like my brain exploded. He finished the last round strong and I tried a few flurries in the last 30 seconds. It got pretty good, it was a fight. I really took a beating in the third and fourth but overall I had my moments.
Everyone afterwards was giving me props and were asking me how many fights I had, when I told them this was first time sparring they were shocked (even a few pros like Layla McCarter, Friday Ahunya was there he didnt say anything though). It turns out the guy I sparred is a pro at 147 pounds and is 2-6. I think I need alot of work on my defense cause he was landing Mayweather/Gatti type combos on me, but everybody was saying its ok cause hes lighter and faster so its inevitable.
deh707 04-04-2007, 03:35 AM sounds like you had some fun. so which of your gloves collection was the first to be used in sparring?
Chipper 04-04-2007, 03:48 AM Yeah bad idea to assume you can eat his shots. Don't want to do that with the wrong guy.

the blue 18oz Titles, I wore my Contender full faceheadgear and it kept gettin knocked crooked and he was so fast he would nail me and it would be crooked and I couldnt see and then he would land like 3 more before I could adjust it

yeah, I paid the price for that. I did two rounds on the heavybag after but I had taken so many shots that when I was moviing around my head was hurtin so I had to kinda slow it down.

RonRoss 04-04-2007, 11:39 AM good man, hopefully you will get more sparring now,try get in with a guy your size though next time then you can really test yourself
McAlister 04-04-2007, 12:13 PM Not bad first time in
mgkirkpatrick 04-04-2007, 01:22 PM sounds really good mate. still confident for to fight on the 14th?
IronNick 04-04-2007, 05:55 PM Squabbs, try to get your next bout on here.
Animal Squabbs 04-04-2007, 06:58 PM oops, its a Title full face headgear not a contender headgear. I was saying it was a contender full face headgear. Ive had for a awhile and cause of the colors I always forget that its a title, Contender doesnt even make headgear.
Animal Squabbs 04-05-2007, 02:11 AM I sparred again today, thats two days in a row. This time it was a muscular light heavy who hasnt had any fights yet. I didnt really feel like sparring today but I did it anyway.
I was coming from 24 hour fitness so I had running shoes on instead of boxing shoes, and I wore a differant headgear this time, the fight gear mexican headgear, and it kept slipping to the side and over my eyes constantly. We went 3 rounds. The guy was throwing bombs and it pretty much played out with me getting drilled, circling trying to fix my headgear, then getting drilled while I was adjusting. I backed him up alot and just basically used footwork and the jab. I switched to southpaw and got rocked with a huge right hand. I was a little dazed but didnt show it and switched back and moved. I had him hurt twice, once especially, he was throwing and I ducked and caught him with a left hook to the stomach and he made a noise and kinda bent over and immediatly clinch and wouldnt let go. Overall I didnt do too good mainly cause I couldnt see the guy most the time and I would be fixing my headgear then my head would get slammed with a big wild hook.

well i'm glad you are getting sparring in. i'm still on the 1-2 punch, but i'll stick with it and fight eventually.
Southpaw16 04-05-2007, 02:54 AM well, congratulations on having begun sparring. Don't worry too much about the results right now in terms of winning or losing the sparring sessions. Just allow yourself to get more comfortable with being in the ring.

Im already comfortable in the ring cause its basically fighting which Im used too, but the thing that is starting to worry me is that my head is killing me. Yesterday I actually felt my brain move after the uppercut and today I kept getting walloped and yesterday and today my head was hurtin pretty bad. Its so bad that I cant hit the other bags afterward cause when I put power in my shots I can feel my brain moving around. Im moving my head around real slowly right now to look around and stuff, something has to be wrong cause I dont think I should be feelin this bad. Maybe its cause I have a small head... Im 260 but my large headgears are alittle big on me. Or maybe the gloves my opponents use, yesterday the guy was using worn out gloves that Ive felt before and the knuckles are worn out, but Ive never felt this bad after streetfighting and that was bare handed. Even before it always seemed to hurt my head worse to get hit with gloves and than barefisted..

ur brain is has not actually moved at all, because if it did ud either be dead or have a terrible concussion. U've just ate some good shots and u need to give ur head a rest. Dont spar at all if u feel anything in ur head. Ive been fortunate enough to only leave the gym once with a very small headache that went away quickly because i took a flush left hook from a powerpuncher. Work on ur defense and don't spar if u feel anything in ur head

yea man **** the headgear i dont even wear it. youll actually get hit MORE if you rely on head movement and peripheral vision. i prefer to spar without headgear.
Buddy, you scared me when you said you took a shot that felt like your brain exploded...that aint cool. First time tho. ****. Souinds like you straight up got your ass thoroughly smashed, but at the same time, sounds like you found out you can weather a blow to the head without going down, which is the most important aspect of boxing, whether or not you can take a punch, Roy Jones will attest to that.
i knew u was a crazy mutha****a to be hittin yourself in the face bloodying your nose and wrestlin around with a pitbull on the ground. but u never wanna come at someone with ypour hands down neglecting defense. always keep them hands high up in the air and if youre too tired to do that, dont ****in spar that 4th round, thats all there is to it. ur brains on the ****in line, when I was just starting out sparring, i was goin up against guys who were 30-7 and **** like that, 2005 hw southern association champs(keenan hickman) , I was out of shape like a mother****er but Id just work real hard for 2 rounds and then be too gassed to go the third, sure the coach would give me **** but, I didnt have to endure losing millions of brain cells that 3rd and 4th round woulda brought, cuz i was ****in tired.

.
not really, it was back and forth somewhat both times. About the uppercut that I said made my brain explode. I was coming in and got stuck and my headgear moved slightly and I went to adjust it and the guy landed 3 hooks and my head was bouncing side to side then he unloaded a big uppercut with everything and it popped my head up and I guess the way my brain was going side to side then jolted up probably caused it. It felt like I could feel it moving around in the fluid up there. I wasnt rocked or anything, it just hurt. Ohwell like I said Ive been hit before.
Animal Squabbs 04-06-2007, 03:35 AM got some more sparring today for the third day in a row. This time against some fellow heavyweights. One is a pro MMA fighter and amateur boxer, the other is a two time amateur champion who trains people at the gym. It was kinda like a round robin thing cause they sparred two rounds, then I sparred the MMA guy two rounds, then another guy sparred the MMA guy for two rounds, then the amataur champ sparred the MMA guy one more round, then I sparred the amateur champ one round.
I think I did ok, the MMA guy seemed kinda tired and he didnt like my pressure. I was doin damn good backin him up and tryin to work inside, except for two times I switched south paw and got clobbered with a right hand. He clinched with me alot and thats something he wasnt doin with the other guys. Im guessing its cause he was tired and I was coming forward more than the other guys.
The other guy is good too, he trains people. He seemed to be going easy with me and for the first thirty seconds he didnt even throw anything I said to him "You aint throwin anything back!" He kept just covering up and I would work to the body and head. Towards the end of the round he picked it up and started catching me with big right hands. We ended up trading toe to toe and he landed huge right hand that pushed my head all the way back and into the ropes and I came back with a flurry that was pretty much smotherd. Right before the bell he put alot into an uppercut that whipped my head up and sent me back a few steps.
chuckisquik 04-06-2007, 03:50 AM sounds like you faught speedy, carlos, and i forgot the big guys name
Animal Squabbs 04-06-2007, 03:55 AM sounds like you faught speedy, carlos, and i forgot the big guys name
not speedy, the black guy terrance jett. Also the bald headed white dude with a goatee and is kinda built. Yeah Carlos is the MMA guys name. I just didnt want to use it. Alfaro or something is the other guys name, he is one of the trainers son.
I have no idea who the hell you are, but if youve seen any of these let me know how I did. Lots of people have been coming up to me and giving me props, but I dont know who I can trust and all that.
chuckisquik 04-06-2007, 04:04 AM i think you train when i leave or you leave when i train.
Animal Squabbs 04-06-2007, 04:08 AM i think you train when i leave or you leave when i train.
tuesday and wednesday I sparred at around 7:00
thursday I sparred at around 6:30
normally on my days off I come in the morning and the days that I work I go at night after I get off.
chuckisquik 04-08-2007, 04:52 AM yeah that could be it i think you left your nike boxing shoes in the gym
Jimmy The Gent 04-08-2007, 05:17 AM wait your trainer is letting you have your first amatuer bout when you have only started sparring? is he a sadist
Chipper 04-09-2007, 01:09 AM I think he said he doesn't have a trainer.
Animal Squabbs 04-09-2007, 02:06 AM yeah that could be it i think you left your nike boxing shoes in the gym
no. The only nike boxing shoes I have are hear at home.
Animal Squabbs 04-09-2007, 02:09 AM wait your trainer is letting you have your first amatuer bout when you have only started sparring? is he a sadist
I dont have a trainer. Right now I was just trying to get back used to hitting all the bags and movin around, then cut weight to at or near 200 then start working with a trainer and competing. Right now Im still getting back in the swing of things shakin of rust and am out of shape and weigh 260. I heard there was gonna be an amateur show and I figured Id jump on it, the gym owner told me I need a trainer though and its too short notice to have a trainer work with me.
Nazgul666 04-11-2007, 01:48 PM Have you thought about what is causing you to get hit?
Are you dropping your hands?
Are you leaning forward which might be facilitating those uppercuts?
That's what I like to take away from every sparring session.

so, people are built different Diego Corrales is taller than David Tua. I guess Tua should be fighting at 140 then.
