The UFC is left scratching it's head after Genki Sudo told Zuffa he had an injury and would not be able to compete in UFC 41, but yet he is o.k. a day later, March 1st, to fight in K-1?
MMAWeekly.com has learned the following. Genki Sudo orginially said yes to a fight in UFC 41 against Josh Thompson. Thompson of course was injured and couldn't fight.
Sudo was going to take on a new challenger, but when it was learned that Yves Edwards would be the opponent, Sudo's management called the UFC and said he had an injury and wouldn't be able to fight.
Instead Sudo will now focus on the K-1 tournament where he could make $50,000 to win the tournament. He still could make just over $12,000 for second and $6,200 for third place. That would be significantly more than what he made in the UFC. The typical three fight contract for most young fighters would be somewhere in the ball park of $2,000 for your first fight, $4,000 for second and $6,000 for the third on average.
Back to Yves Edwards for a moment. It now looks like his opponent will be Rich Clementi who is the reigning FFC Lightweight Champion. It seems like Clementi might have been the only guy who wanted to fight Edwards.
There have been strong rumors that the UFC contacted guys like Richard Crunkleton and Ray "Bradda" Cooper but with such a short notice, neither guy was quite ready to take this fight on such short notice. Edwards has KO'd his last three opponents.
