Monzon was one of the greatest. It all came from his great boxer-puncher style. If you look at alot the greats, they had the charachteristics of being able to punch, yet box at the same time. Robinson, Monzon, Jones Jr, etc...

Ottke vs Monzon would have been the best fight since Ali Frazier!

Monzon > Ottke by death.

Why would Ottke want to kill monson? He will knock him out but no kill him!

Monzon's biggest attributes, in my opinion, were his ring intelligence, his sense of timing, his ability to "dissect" an opponent over the course of a night, and mostly his overall ability to control the pace of just about each and every fight that he was ever involved in...One of the very best "ring generals" I've ever seen fight.

Coupled with what he possessed upstairs, he was also quite big and very strong for a middleweight, so if an opponent tried off-setting Monzon's prefered outside game by trying to come inside on him, he had the physical & mental gifts to mostly neutralize that if he so chose to, but also had a proven ability to punch on the inside with some impressive left hooks and right uppercuts that put more than a few people down.

Of course, although Monzon wasn't nearly the fastest puncher anybody'll see, whatever he lacked in that department was helped out by the fact that the majority of his punches were thrown basically straight up the middle, and got there both fairly quickly, with great accuracy, and with a good amount of snap or power to them. Very much a "sharpshooter" from the outside, and to a lesser extent, even on the inside...Opposite to that, Monzon himself wasn't an easy guy to hit, as he always showed a high level of defensive awareness, whether it be staying just out of range on the outside, neutralizing an opponents punching opportunities on the inside, or by simply following the old & basic rules of keeping your hands up and elbows in when in range. A tough guy to hit with anything more than but one punch at a time, but when you did get to him you were hitting one of the most proven chins in middleweight history...Very tough to even "stun" with a punch or two, and proven late round's stamina to take that durability through a full 15 round fight.

Lots and lots of upper level attributes on the guy (his overall boxing "knowhow" being tops), and with very, very few weaknesses that could be exploited means that he was a great all-rounder whose a difficult fight for any middleweight in history no matter what their names were or what they brought to the table in a fight.

His assets were his power and great chin...and he was hard to figure out, very awkward. Not an exciting guy to watch but he was very intelligent in the ring.

Monzons had the ability to lure his opponents to sleep with his jab, and when his opponents least expected it he would throw a right hand. Check out my monzon sig.

He's one of my heroes because he was so great, yet so nondescript.......

One of the truly greats. Fantastic assets and use of them. Great dimensions for a middleweight - tall with long arms. Utilised these with a great jab and straight right and keeping out of range of opponents arsenal. Coupled with this a great ring brain and a fantastic distance fighter winning most of the late rounds.

He smoked like two packs of cigs even when training. He would stop during roadwork to take a smoke break. The guy was an amazing freak of nature and his hardpartying and playboy life didn't effect his Stamina. He partied harder than Mayorga, Morrison and Vinny Paz combined. Check his Napoles fight out to check out how great he is. At his best No Middleweight in History could beat Monzon. Valdes is one of the most unlucky fighters in history, a guy who had all the tools and could have been champ any other time except then. Monzon was the real deal.
