Great list I have Napoles very high on my list also. I hate to leave Barney Ross off the list on talent alone, but Welter is so deep you almost have to.

I could easily put Tito in the Top four but not higher than that. Armstrong didn't reign at Welter all that long, but the Ross win is huge. Titos competition wasn't deep enough to be number one. Not sure about having Walcott so high since no film of him exists and he was very small and not sure how he would have faired head to head with the others. Tito made alot of defenses but so did Pipino Cuevas and he doesn't belong in the top ten.

Number one With out a doubt is robinson. If he is the greates p4p of all time he has to be the greatest welterweight.

Not necessarily. He fought at Middleweight too and by your logic that means he's the greatest ever middle, but he's not. (In my opinion anyway).

I agree with that. I just don't agree with Ben's logic.

I think you right, but it is a damn shame no tape exists of him at welter really not much I should say, Fusari and one more I think. Monzon is the best Middleweight imo. It is a toss up though.

In that order

Pryor and Chavez fought at 140 and has little to no success at 147 either. Leonard should be ahead of Hearns on his head to head win alone, not metioning his win over Benitez is more impressive than Hearns over Ceuvas.

Mayweather has had like two fights at 147. Take it easy not yet. Mosely only beat DeLaHoya at 147 and no great fighters besides that at 147.

My top three head to head welterweights would be

#1 Sugar Ray Robinson- no doubt undefeated at welterweight. Defeated 5 welterweight champions. His best work was done at welterweight and was his best division not middleweight (although he was a heck of middleweight). Awesome one punch power, speed, chin, courage, boxing skills, etc.

#2 Sugar Ray Leonard- Holds wins over undefeated great fighters such as Wilfred Benitez, and Thomas Hearns. Also a win over the great Roberto Duran in the infamous "no mas" bout. Even in his sole welterweight loss a close decision loss to Roberto Duran he performed valiantly and proved what he was made. Combined awesome handspeed with ko power, one of the best combination punchers in history of boxing.

#3 Thomas Hearns- Joe Louis called Thomas Hearns the hardest punching welterweight he had ever seen up till that point he said Ray Robinson was the hardest punching welterweight. Amazing KO artist destroyed the feared Pipino Cuevas. Had he beat Ray Leonard in there 1981 superfight he would be #2 on this list but lost in the 14th round when ahead on all cards. Was a ko artist who was also a great boxing stylist.

I would place Emile Griffith and Jose Napoles right behind these three fighters. I would also place Kid Gavilian and Tito Trinidad in the top 10.

I personally believe Oscar should be rated above Tito at welterweight. Tito was a superb puncher with the ability to press the action throughout the fight, however did not the possess the same depth in his skillset or the ringsmarts... he was relatively one dimensional which allowed oscar to put on a boxing clinic in their match. Because of this i believe Oscar fares better in terms of head to head rankings within the welterweight division, one only needs to compare Oscars performance against Varagas to Trinidads to see the disparity in skill level and adaptability.

Why?.......

bengidaro

He was a great boxer and I'm not taking anything away from him but there are definitely a couple who should be ranked better. It's probably just me. I usually side with the real old school boxers. Which is why I think its hard to compare boxers like Armstrong with boxers like Leonard. It was a different sport.
