It's true. LaMotta is one of the most overrated boxers in history. Who did he beat? A washed up Cerdan? A green Robinson (who he had a 16lb weight advantage over), and other no-names, has beens, and never was's. LaMotta never beat a true middleweight great in their prime ever. He just feasted on guys a lot smaller than him. He was slow, didn't have a real devastating punch, his boxing fundamentals were minimal at best, and he had poor stamina. He was not IMO a great middleweight. He was good, but not great. Very overrated.

so what, when u hav over 100 fights , losses are going to happen. and he did actually beat robinson once or twice. and was only knocked down twice in his 13 year career.

robinson went undefeated with 93 professional fights untill lamotta knocked him out of the ring. but he got up. what a disapointment.

yea it was amazing, he only received 1 TKO i think by basilio. not even a 10 count K.O.

I believe the last on the right, is Carmen Basilio and not Gene Fullmer.

A green Robinson??? You make it sound like he fought Robinson when the latter had only had a few fights. He was the best fighter in the world then.

He still was not at his peak and was a lot smaller than LaMotta.

He had 40 unbeaten bouts and beaten Lamotta before, and i don't see a huge amount of diffirence of Robinson many fights after that loss. Sounds pretty peak-ish to me. Fact is, Lamotta worked his ass off to beat him, and deserves all the credit he gets for it. Yes, he was a bigger man(though Ray was taller with a longer reach i believe) than Robinson, but we're talking about Sugar Ray here.

Lamotta is overrated for sure, i cant belive ring magazine ranks him so high. B-hop and james toney would have beat him.

He's not going to knock toney out and his style of fighting is so flawed. Toney its time to give him a boxing lesson.

No, LaMotta is a great fighter. He was the first guy to beat Robinson, and the only guy to knock him down.

Ishak Pasha

^^^^^ exactly. and that was in robinson's primes. he thought LaMotta was one of those little white boys he used to Knock out. the same goes for basilio.

He outweighed robinson by 17 pounds when he beat him. Either way, i'm not denying he was good. However, where people rate him among the history of this sport, he doesn't deserve.

wtf u talkin about? when Robinson and LaMotta fought Ray had like 100 amatuer fights and 40 pro fights, how is that green? Jake had poor stamina? stamina and a great chin are his best qualities. everytime he fought he would bully, and throw nonstop leather. He fought the top contenders of the era, ones the champ avoided.contenders like Holman Williams, Jose Basora, Lloyd Marshall, George Kochan, Fritzie Zivic, Satterfield, Jimmy Edgar, and Tony Janiro. imo LaMotta gives any middleweight trouble :smashfrea

Why hate on LaMotta? No one rates him top p4p. But he does have one of the best wins in the history of boxing. He beat the best fighter of his era, of all time at a relatively peak moment (of course in retrospect no one is going to pick a losing fight as 'prime'). And he has a very good track record besides.

Again, Robinson was a welterweight and only 22 years old. He was not at his peak yet. And LaMotta had bad stamina period. Look at the sixth Robinson fight. He had no lags from like the sixth round on. LaMotta is not great period. He just threw wild shots until his opponent went down. That's a poor fight plan.

That's a poor fight plan.you got a point tho. in the fight where they called it the st valentine's day massacre. lamotta got tired in 7 rounds. robinson was letting lamotta hit so he could get tire and for robinson to attack. at the 7th round lamotta was wasted already, and theres when robinson delivered the 8 punch combination massacre  i loved it
