View Full Version : Football Fans: How's your season going?
OptimusWolf 03-15-2007, 06:20 AM Wolves are having a pretty damn good season, and we're good candidates for a play-off spot. I was furious when Mccarthy was appointed, but he's done very well with zero cash. We're not exactly an attacking force but the team play for each other and we've got THE best keeper in the league.
My football season has been a bit of a write-off though, with ankle ligaments and persistant hamstring troubles limiting appearances. I might retire and spend my weekends at Home Depot from now on....

Liverpool are having a strange season, we have quality and can on our day beat anyone in Europe, the problem is we are not consistent and need an alternative Michael Owen or young Robbie Fowler to get us 20-30 goals a season.
The good news is that we are in the quarter finals of the CL with a good draw and will probably finish in the top 4 again so CL next season. Add into that we have new owners who are building a new stadium (could be 80,000 seater now as well) and who are prepared to release some serious cash for top players!
Things look good!
As for my personal game, that finished a few years ago after a parachute accident so......

Well played on sunday, you outplayed and out battled us and deserved the win...that hurt to say. West Brom's season has been up and down, sometimes we've looked like champions other times dreadful, see southend away. On the whole im happy with where we are and how we are playing and although automatic promotion is slipping away we will be tough to beat in the playoffs, if we can hang on to a spot of course. Im actaully seeing them win unlike the past two seasons so that always helps. I've got a funny feeling we'll play wolves again this season and what a huge match that would be.
OptimusWolf 03-15-2007, 10:06 AM Yep at the start of the season i would have bet on West Brom getting an automatic spot. I looked at the squads around the championship and the Baggies were clearly the best.
But you don't seem to be able to win consistently as you say, and even lest night - which was a great chance to get back into the automatic mix - you managed to f*ck it up!
still 1-6 for the season eh!
Micky, at least you went out with a bang! I'd be far too scared to do one of those. And Liverpool continue to put in good performances but definitely lack a goalscorer, definitely. Kuyt certainly isn't the answer either, although he fits in with the Pool work ethic which is what won you the CL and got you past Barca this year.
The Monk 03-15-2007, 10:18 AM Last night, dont get me started, still get no voice. In the 1st half the ref decided to send off 1 of our players for breathing on 1 of them and give them a penalty for good measure, also Davie was injured and out for season in the build up to the goal, and a shocking performance 1 to rub salt into the wound. 2nd half thoguh they earned a standing ovation, completly battered palace with 10 players and they managed to score with their only shot on target with the last kick of the match..gutted. Ahh thats better, sorry for sharing my woes with everyone.

Yes mate you are right, Kuyt is very good player and works his arse off for the team but that's the problem we need a player who only concentrates on putting the ball in the net ala Owen or Fowler.
Saying that Kuyt may come good, he has had a better first season than say Drogba had and look at him this season for Chelsea!, plus Ian Rush was a team player who scored 30+ goals a season so....
BTW hows Darren Potter and Paul Harrison getting on? I've heard Potter is doing OK, Harrison I assume is still in the reserves?

Koumas seems to have found his form again, I used to watch him when he was a kid, he grew up round the corner from me, to be honest he never looked that good but that why scouts have the jobs they do!
The Raging Bull 03-15-2007, 12:48 PM Liverpool have had a yo-yo season. We've been brilliant on our day (v Chelsea) and woeful (v Everton) on others.
We've seen Kuyt take one of the striker berths and really make it his own and young Agger has practically retired Hyypia. Benitez is certainly making the team his own and everything about us tactically is advancing. Our game has become extremely expansive and we have been brilliant in defence, with Reina having another class season again regardless of what the critics say.
The new owners will hopefully fulfill their promise of pumping money into the squad so we can eradicate our problem of being unable to put the ball in the back of the net. Someone like Villa should sort this out. The new stadium will be good too :D
One thing that has dissapointed me about this season is that Paul Anderson hasn't established himself in the first team at all. I really thought he would have been pushing Pennant for the right wing spot after seeing him play so brilliantly for the FA Youth Cup team. I guess there's always next season.
OptimusWolf 03-15-2007, 12:49 PM Potter had a slow start, and he still lacks a bit of bite for the championship, but he's composed on the ball and has the potential to play at PL level. I don't think he'll ever be good enough for Pool though.
I've not seen anything of Harrison, think he might have moved on.
Jim_Davis 03-15-2007, 03:24 PM I support Chelsea. Other than the fact we're trailing United the season should be perfect. But I'm pissed off now, our clubs spirit is dying out. Our own manager talks about leaving for other clubs. I get pissed off with that like that.

Koumas was amazing untill about end of january and since then hes looked lacklustre and tired, so has the rest of the team though.

Oh right, he picked up the best player outside of the Premiership award didn't he?
Will you hang in there do you think and make the play offs?

Yeah, but its always the same with awards they are a curse, his form has dropped since then. Automatic is definatly gone but playoffs shou;ld be safe, got blues sunday, then after that a decent run in. Think the playoff finals may be at wembley, would love that. Always had a sot spot for liverpool, think it was because when you came to our place couple of seasons back you completly played us off the park. That was the only time ive clapped an opposistion team. Xabi Alonso was the best player ive ever witnessed as well.

Xabi is class especially if he has time on the ball, the best player I have witnessed in the flesh is Zidane, he seemed to glide with the ball.
Stevie G aint bad either!
OptimusWolf 03-16-2007, 05:05 PM Interesting, if I try and think of the best players I've seen live, I think top of the list is the Vieira-Petit partnership when Arsenal beat Wolves in the FA cup circa 1997.
I saw Owen and Gerrard in a friendly about 2001 and Owen was class. gerrard was also excellent, and much quicker than I expected him to be.
Recently Robinho (who I never rated) was amazing for Brazil against Argentina - he made Messi, Tevez and Riquelme pale in comparison. When kaka finally came on he was a revelation as well; another player who was much quicker and stronger than I imagined.
I'd love to have seen Giggs or Keane play at their peak, my favourite players of all time.
Jim_Davis 03-16-2007, 11:50 PM I was at Zola's Chelsea testimonial where he came back and played for us. That was an expierience.

Gerrard is surprising fast, I remember Michael Owen on Soccer Am saying that he thought Gerrard was the quickest in the England squad, I think he meant over 100m, Gerrard seems to have the power but I think Owen, Lennon and Wright Phillips have a quicker turn of pace over short distances!
