Come on Jake and other smart people don;t let me down.

I have a simple network connection. One computer connects to a roouter, as does a second one. The router hooks up to my DSL modem, which hooks up to the phone line. For some reason one of the computers will not let me share its files with the other computer. No reason at all. HELP ME PLEASE.

Maybe because you only have a DSL router and not a network router.

Thank God, some one who knows what'g going on! I hooked the cables up, installed the router software which set up an internet connection that's always there now with my DSL. Then I ran network set up wizard. I chose the option that I have 2 or more computers conected to a hub/router which connects to the internet. And it "configured it" for me. Now one of them shares everything with the other computer. But that other computer won't let me share the C drive under the "Sharing and Security" options tab in the properties. I don;t knwo why. Also, I cannot connect to any game servers on the internet for some reason... And since my other computer won;t share with this one, this one does not recognize a printer over there. So basically all thats working is the internet is shared on both comps (works perfect), and one computer can access the other. (I can find the other computer on the work group, I just can't access it...)

if you have a DSL router with 4 ports you should be able to put the DSL into the uplink on the router, and the two computers into one of the other four ports. make sure you make both computers join the same workgroup name, you can set that up by right clicking "My Computer" going to properties, under machine name, it should also say what the workgroup name is, usually by default it's either "MSHOME" or "WORKGROUP" then you have to right click on the folders that you wish to share, go to properties, and enable sharing. If your running windows98 you also have to install sharing in the network properties section of the control panel. you will be able to tell what's being shared by a blue hand icon that will appear on the folders that you wish to share.

it sounds like your running windowsXP when you enable internet sharing, XP defaults to turning it's built in firewall ON, you can turn it off by going into network connections right clicking the DSL connection and going to advanced and turn the firewall off, this causes problems with game servers since they usually use ports orther than the default 80(www) 21(FTP) and other normal internet related functions.

run a command prompt and then at the prompt type ipconfig /all

it should show you what each computers internal IP is, i think by default windows gives it something in the 192.168.xx.xx or something like that. make sure for your internal network that each computers has a different IP, the router should have assigned these for you, but i guess something could have been setup wrong.

also plug your computers into the last two ports on your router, for example on a 4 port router, put the computers in 3 and 4.

nope. more thoughts?

ya i think that 1 and the uplink are crosslinked and result in packet collisions.

LukeDothSucketh

what should i do about that.

casp3r

well if you tried changing the computer to 3 and 4 and the problem still exists, then yournot suffering from collisions. are both systems running the same OS'es?

Do you get any errors at all or you just cant see it. Are your ip's static or dynamic? If you are running XP or Win2k you will have to have the same user/pass on both machines!!!

LukeDothSucketh

same user/pass on both machine eh? That's gotta be the problem. Both = Windows XP. How do I rememedy this?

When I try to share any folder on the other computer, it just keeps telling me that Windows had turned off remote access, and reccomends me to use network setup wizard, which I have been through at least 9999 times.

Only if you are connecting with win98 or lower.

Do you have aim?

As much as I despise AIM I'll get it to make this easier, give me a second.

if you speak of having the same user/pass for the internet login. he's already past that issue, his internet login is stored in his router, and both machine connect to the internet, correct? something in his network settings sounds f'ed if only one computer isn't working, but the internet is working.

Its not what I speak of.

if you mean the same login pass for user of windows, then you don't need that, i have it set up right at work with three computers, all with different users/pass for each system.

It seems I've appeared here a bit too late. I've skimmed this briefly coz I'm heading out but I'll throw in some stuff here:

1) What operating systems are you running on each computer?

2) Like Waylander said, make sure they're apart of the same workgroup (e.g. WORKGROUP).

3) Assuming they're all plugging into the same router, make sure they're all running TCP/IP and if you can, set the router to assign all the computers on your LAN an IP address (DHCP is the option, if you have it).

Sorry for the brevity and if I haven't really addressed much, but if you can answer that for me and keep me posted I'll try and add more detail tomorrow or later tonight.

cheers mate,

- The Jake

Nothing is fixed. Then again I really don't care. I just want the router to stop blocking me from connecting to servers in Tour of Duty.
