My book, "The Sundowners: The History of the Black Prizefighter Volume 2" has a chapter on Allentown Joe Gans. Very good fighter.

i forget from where but back then alot of fighters used the 'falling step'

dempsey said gans' falling step could be heard 10 blocks down the street when his foot smacked the canvas, 'like a gunshot'

to add lots of power to a straight shot. in jack dempsey's "Championship Fighting", in summary he gives a method that involves all the weight on your lead foot, then moving that foot forward very quickly with all the weight on it and delivering a punch in the process. the lead foot is supposed to slam down.
