View Full Version : degrading work
rigid 01-22-2003, 09:24 PM help me out with some intel here guys.i'd appreciate it.
i'll set the background for you.i get ssi disability checks, mainly for the medicines that i take.i get a pretty good sum each month.that, coupled with the misses checks and we are ok.we just moved and we bought all new furnature, pc, **** for the place, and just bought a new car also.we are not falling behind but we are not as far ahead as i would like.ssi allows me to still earn a certain number of dollars per month so i am going to get a part time job.it's probably gonna be some grunt work a couple days a week at the restaurant near our place cause it's so close and they hire for **** like that.
my problem is that it seems like degrading work you know.when i was working before, i was a tech at a new car lot around here.i was almost certified to master tech and was making really good money.i was getting ready to go to PA to teach.the misses says she don't care about that ****, sayin i'm doing what needs to be done to take care of mine.
i try to get rid of those bs thoughts but i can't.it is REALLY ****in bothering me that i am going to be working at a joint like that, doing that type of worl.
what do you guys think??
The Jake 01-22-2003, 09:27 PM My dad was a former Operations Manager for a web development company. He has been in an executive level position for over 4 years. He has also been in the Information Technology business for nearly 30 years.
Right now, he's contemplating a job as a security guard to put bread and butter on the table just to survive until we can get his business launched and real estate investment underway. He has been job hunting for over 12 months (IT employment in this country is at 5% FYI). I know of several other people in IT, in the same area, all doing the same thing. Competing with 600+ applicants for every position they apply for.
I know of people who have sunk to "a lot lower" levels just to survive bro. At the end of the day you do what you gotta do to survive, even if it's just short term.
PS: This job does not have to be your career.

LukeDothSucketh 01-22-2003, 09:28 PM I work at McDonald's. There is no worse place in the world. Once you've worked there, anything seems like the best job in the entire world. Don't worry about it man. **** happens. As long as you know one thing, When the **** hits the fan, you can get a gun, take out a whole ****load of people before anyone can stop you. That's the most reassuring thought I have.
The Jake 01-22-2003, 09:29 PM I'm pretty sure a jizz mopper would come close....

LukeDothSucketh 01-22-2003, 09:30 PM That's a part of my job description too. Others include picking the balls out of the "Play Place" one by one to wipe up pee.
The Jake 01-22-2003, 09:31 PM As long as you do not sit comfortable in your job because you can work part time and collect SSI then I don't see a prob with it. Do you have better employment options at this time? If not, either create them or find them otherwise take it. Don't hold out for the dream job which MAY not happen.

rigid 01-22-2003, 09:35 PM i have no better offers right now.this job would only be super part time and for a short time.i get 800 a month from ssi and the misses brings home about 1900 a month.i don't really NEED to do this, i just want to get a little farther ahead you know.i like to be comfortable.
Curly Howard 01-22-2003, 09:36 PM I do PC repair during the day but what was supposed to be the "career of the future" 5 years ago can now be done by the average 10 year old so I have to work in a factory 3 12 hour shifts one week then 4 12s the next so we can stay ahead. I have meet some really cool people there. Have fun with it. As far as what people think who cares. Your job is not who you are.

RyDawg 01-22-2003, 10:04 PM Factory work is Godsend. It's easy and pays a ****load. I'm still living off what I made over the summer.
Purity 01-22-2003, 10:07 PM rigid,
i'm not really sure what it is you want. if you're just asking us if it's ****ty to have to take a bull**** job for the time being......well, no. do whatcha gotta do as long as you know that there's nothing else that you can do at this time to bring in extra cash.
if you'd like to take a realistic look at your #'s then i could either fax or email you a budget sheet that i send out to all my clients. this way you can see in black and white
1) what goes in
2) what goes out
3) what to do with the rest
just keep your long-term goals in mind. remember that he who wants to be first must first be last and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, don't ever give up.
