View Full Version : What's the Hottest Division in Boxing Today?
THRILLAinmanila 10-14-2004, 01:32 AM There has been a lot of excitement in different divisions in the past few weeks. Explosive bouts have recently happened , especially in the middleweight division. What in your opinion are the hottest divisions in boxing today?
pinkpanther 10-14-2004, 06:35 AM er.... the one thats not on your list Junior Welterwight, deepest and hottest, and interestingly not dominated by one country a real worldwide division - whch can only be good for boxing.
Tyszu (Aus)
Mitchell (US)
Harris (US)
Cotto (COS)
Hatton (GB)
Mayweather (US)
Pinto (COS)
Gatti (CAN)
Urkal (GER)
Hurtardo (CUB)
yip id go along with that closely followed by feather / superfeather.
mr.thraz 10-14-2004, 06:37 AM junior welter
mr.thraz 10-14-2004, 06:38 AM with middle pulling up to second
really thats interesting, I dont see middle as very exciting at all, Hopkins is too dominant, after Hopkins V Tito I dont think theres too many great fights out there. Hopkins Sturm? Gimme a break, Hopkins eastman, its a beat down on howard, Hopkins Taylor, nah he aint fougth a real middleweight yet let a alone a legend. Suppose theres Winky v Nard, but that to me is gonna ba fight for the purist a real tactical game of cat and mouse.
Might be more interesting when Nard has retired I suppose in the same way the heavies have since Lewis went but the quality hasnt gone up.
Personally see the feather and super feather with the next best match ups, Morales, Barerra, Pacman, Marquez, Chico if he can get back down to super feather again....quality abound there.
interested to hear why middle might be better mate? I could be missing something. cheers :cool:
TheFairPole 10-14-2004, 08:05 AM I'll say that perfect 10 division where the models fight each other!!! Some of them are pretty good too!!! ;)
neils7147933 10-14-2004, 08:22 AM 140 lbs. Easily.
THRILLAinmanila 10-19-2004, 03:52 AM Yeah forgot about jr. welterweight .....
Tszyu-Mitchell is a good one coming.....
Sir_Jose 10-19-2004, 04:11 AM 140 lbs. Easily.
yeah pretty much
Epie2 10-19-2004, 05:16 AM Let's not forget the Flyweights. Pongsaklek Wonjungkam has been wiping out challengers. Of course, the smaller fighters may not be that interesting to most.
Dark Destroyer 10-19-2004, 06:00 AM I'll go for Welterweight at the moment as it has so many big names in and so much potential for some amazing fights. The Featherweight is impressive too but Welterweight is my first choice.
I'd say 140lbs., Jr. welterweight...here we have :
* Kostya Tszyu
* Floyd Mayweather Jr.
* Arturo Gatti
* Miguel Cotto
* Sharmba Mitchell
* Ricky Hatton
* Vivian Harris
Exciting fighters all!

Wow, i was searching for the Junior Welters on the list and thinking where the **** is it!?!? am i blind!!
140 is the strongest division, now all we need is for the figthers to fight each other!
THRILLAinmanila 10-19-2004, 07:40 PM Let's not forget the Flyweights. Pongsaklek Wonjungkam has been wiping out challengers. Of course, the smaller fighters may not be that interesting to most.
Well I guess one of the reasons flyweights aren't getting much attention is that because there aren't big money fights going
around in the division....Also because the division is traditionally dominated by oriental fighters who do not have
the backing of big name promoters back in the east. I think though that with better marketing and promotion on the division,
in the future we may expect more attention on the flyweights.
Having said that, yes I agree with you that Pongsaklek has been dismantling opposition left and right. Very good boxer with probably a better future at this time if he decides to go up further in weight...(where the bigger money and exposure awaits...)
THRILLAinmanila 10-20-2004, 01:47 AM Rick Reeno's article on the main page today
regarding middleweights shows why its one of the hottest
divisions in boxing lately....
BoxFan 10-20-2004, 03:52 AM Featherweight and Junior welterweight divisions are the best right now.
So many good fighters.
THRILLAinmanila 10-20-2004, 05:09 AM I'll go for Welterweight at the moment as it has so many big names in and so much potential for some amazing fights. The Featherweight is impressive too but Welterweight is my first choice.
Do I here Scott Harrison - Manny Pacquiao ?
Do I here Scott Harrison - Manny Pacquiao ?
Exciting match-up, it's gonna be one hell of a short entertaining scrap! It won't last the distance. Neither fighter knows how to back-up.
Now, let's see the featherweight division :
* Manny Pacquiao
* Juan Manuel Marquez
* Marco Antonio Barrera (IMO he's goin back down after EM)
* In Jin Chi
* Scott Harrison
3rd hottest if not equal in terms of excitement to the featherweights is at 130, Lightweight division :
* Diego Corrales
* Jose Luis Castillo
* Juan Diaz
* Julio Diaz
* Joel Casamayor
Dark Destroyer 10-20-2004, 07:21 AM Do I here Scott Harrison - Manny Pacquiao ?
:eek: Is this fight happening? I haven't heard anything but if it does this will be a very brutal little fight. Many people would think Manny will breeze through Scott but i guarentee Scott will be a tougher foe than most people would think.

Last I heard is that Scott is interested in a Pacman fight right after his upcoming tune-up . But I think he wants to fight in his home turf, and that Manny's camp is not to keen on it. But a Harrison-Pacquiao duel I agree will be a wrestling match...
THRILLAinmanila 11-09-2004, 07:19 PM The jr. welterweight division just got heated up by Tszyu ....
But the heavy bouts are just around the corner to heat up the division !
whdempsey 11-09-2004, 10:46 PM I like the fact that junior welter wasn't included on your list. Virtually everyone agrees that it's the best one out there, and ceartinly the deepest. We've been hearing that for about two years now. Although there's not doubting the validity of that statement, personally, I'm sick of hearing it.
And you know what? 140 isn't gonna be the best for much longer. A year or two, tops. Remember how great feather was a few years ago? Remember how much everyone talked about it? And then prety much instantaneously everyone started talking about junior welter. Naz retired (more or less) Tapia stopped fighting so hot, Barerra was taking care of the senior citizens, and that's all that was going on. Granted, it was still an above average weight class, but when 140 became the best, it took everyone by surprise.
The same things gonna happen at junior welter. Tzyu's gonna retire or move up, and so will Mitchell. Gatti will retire soon, and Floyd will be looking to move up again. Zab's already gone, and so is Hurtado. Hatton may or may not pan out. The same is true of Cotto (who I'm picking as the future 140 lb champ). Then you'll be left with Vivian Harris, maybe some of the young guns, and perhapes some guys moving up from lightweight. Still a decent division, but not the one it is today.
Point being, start looking around. Maybe it'll be welter, or middle. It could even be one of the step children, super middle or (dare i say it?) even cruiser. But it won't be junior welter.

I agree and think that Super Middle will get very interesting in the not too near future. It will I think 140 will lose a few guys but will gain the likes of Corrales and Castillo. Corrales will support 140 nicely.
Soundtraveler 11-09-2004, 11:04 PM Oh NO :eek:! He went there - Cruiser! ;)
Imagine being a great fighter, but the only weight you can make is cruiser...!
loangunZ 11-10-2004, 02:06 AM The HW division is really heating up with Vitali and Golota with the possibility of being the unified HW champ.
and also the Light Welterweight

Feather and Superfeather I believe though will become much hotter in the coming months, with bouts involving Morales, Barrera, Marquez, and Pacquiao upcoming....
Champoreeno 11-10-2004, 08:16 AM I agree that 140 is the best, but there are a lot of different fights available betwwen the guys now fighting all the way from 126 - 147. 135 is pretty good with some of those guys considering fights in both directions.
bigdlb12 11-10-2004, 11:59 AM I said Middle but Light Heavyweight was close too, I think with most of the big names in boxing at 160 DLH,Trinidad,Hopkins,Mayorga and hope that in the near future Winky and Mosley too, hell even Vargas
The depth in 140 is solid. There are 2-3 guys at the top who are P4P, and then 6-8 or so who are very solid fighters.
THRILLAinmanila 11-16-2004, 05:27 PM Better to deliberate on the best divisions right now rather than the weakest :)
The Fix 11-16-2004, 06:22 PM i voted for middle because there is just so many possibilitys
THRILLAinmanila 11-16-2004, 07:27 PM The feathers will be back in action on the 27th :D
EngorgedW/Blood 02-16-2010, 11:05 AM Huh? How come this thread showed up in the lounge but the last poster who bumped it was in 2004???
