WEST PALM BEACH -- A top prosecutor was arrested on sex charges Tuesday for stripping and masturbating in front of a Web camera for someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl, police said
Assistant State Attorney Ira Karmelin faces two felonies: solicitation of a minor for sex and transmission of an image harmful for a minor, according to Orange County Sheriff's Office Detective Tom Harrison. He was released on $250,000 bail after several hours in custody.
Karmelin, a top prosecutor in Palm Beach County, has been in the state attorney's office for more than 10 years and has said he hopes to become a judge.
The charges came after an Orlando television station began working on a story about pedophiles using Web cams. The station had a young-looking undercover reporter pose as a 14-year- old. Authorities said Karmelin approached the reporter in a chat room.
