from sherdog.com

Nick Diaz has tested positive for marijuana following his stunning submission win over Takanori Gomi on Feb. 24, Sherdog.com learned Monday afternoon.

According to Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer, Diaz is the only mixed martial artist tested on the PRIDE 33 card to return a positive result for a banned substance.

The 23-year-old welterweight from Stockton, Calif. declined to comment on the news. Diaz' manager, Cesar Gracie, offered his support to Diaz while saying he does not condone the use of marijuana.

Diaz captured his PRIDE debut versus Gomi, the Japanese organization's 161-pound champion, in spectacular fashion. Afterwards, it was learned that Diaz had suffered a fractured orbital bone and was medically suspended up to six months. While the NSAC has discretion, suspensions for the use of marijuana have been for a similar period of time.

It's total bull**** that he would get reprimanded for that.

I agree that you can't just pick and chose among substance violations but weed should be legal in the first place.

If he gets suspended...

Hell, there's cage fighting outside of Nevada. It was a non-title fight too. This isn't huge news, only that he beat Gomi while he had drugs in his system - not performance enhancing drugs either...

If Diaz disregards the suspension, then he's screwed as far as fighting in Nevada goes, or any fight organization who promotes cards in Nevada. He should just serve the suspension. He's medically suspended for 6 months anyways.

Big deal. If anything the bud would hurt his performance. No way in hell its enhancing it at all. Its not like he was lit when he was fighting...

On second thought...he is from Nor Cal..home of the World's Greatest Bud...:duh:

Most states honor other states suspensions. Within a few years it looks like all 50 will. Some of the more southern states are trying to coordinate with Mexico too. The primary goal is not to punish guys like Diaz, it's to keep guys from getting KO'd several times in a short period of time by them going to and from different states and Mexico. I know Texas checks to see if a fighter has any suspensions in other states, and sends out their suspensions to other states.

The only reason they test for it is because its an illegal substance in regards to Federal and State laws. If it ever becomes legal it will not be tested for.

One of my friends who trained BJJ in Brazil said alot of them do it before class to relax, but never before a fight or tournament.

You being serious? I'm sure it was in his system from smoking previously as it stays in your system for about a month and all. I really doubt he smoked before the match, and if so i really dont think its cheating. Thats like saying drinking a beer to calm down before a match is cheating. Besides, inhaling smoke into your lungs doesnt exactly help your cardio much. I've spared stoned/done jujitsu/etc. and i can say from experience it doesnt help, it drains your energy. If I would smoke one day before practice and then not smoke the next I would definatly notice a difference in terms of how much energy i would have. Besides, I cant speak for Diaz, but I know for me personally I get hit easier when I'm stoned as well.

I love smoking weed. I can still function as a normal human being in society, and it's not bankrupted me or anything, or caused any adverse effects except for the munchies. Pretty sure the caffene in the cup of coffee i'm drinking right now is worse for me than the joint i smoked last night.

I do it too. Helps with the aches and pains of training also. I just don't it before working out.

-The effects of marijuana on athletic performance include an increased reaction time, decreased fine motor coordination, and increased heart rate. These effects along with the vasodilating effect cause an athlete to reach maximum heart rate at a lower than normal intensity of exercise, which decreases maximum work capacity.

-Chronic marijuana use has been associated with decreased motivation to perform and to give a maximum effort.

****, I'm smokin herb as soon as i'm out of my program. The retarded thing is I'm in this program for drinking yet that I can still get away with from time to time, and I'm pretty sure alcohol is worse than weed, definatly in terms of how retarded it can make you act. The other thing that sucks is I've become a full blown smoker now, which sorta sucks but i have other things to blaim for that as well, like my girlfriend breaking up with me so she could go **** my "friend" for a while, but **** it **** happens. ****, guess i forgot this is a martial arts forum for a sec.

I could debate the pros and cons of marijuana all day long. But this is the wrong forum for it, I guess.

The weed thing is not a big issue since he has a medical suspension anyway. Everyone knows, the fans and judges included, that weed does NOTHING but make you hungry afterwards.

Wow. There's apparently a chance that his win over Gomi may be turned into a "no-contest". Now that would be bogus. It's happened before in the UFC in the Bobby Hoffman/Mark Robinson fight. Hoffman won with a brutal elbow KO, but had it changed to a "no-contest" for testing positive for weed. ****ty deal for Diaz if this comes to pass.

That'd be ****ed if that happens but i wouldnt be surprized if it does. I wonder if politics would have anything to do with that, since gomi is such a big name and all. I'm not saying that this would be why they'd overturn the win but just throwing out the possibility that it might be.

i agree with it being ****ed up, but since its up to nsac ( iam not sure of this) they wont rule it a no-contest most likey i think....they ****ing hate pride*fact and they will probably not just so it could look bad for pride!

Yeah, the Robinson/Hoffman fight in the UFC was in New Jersey. Not sure if Nevada will rule differently than they did or not.
