well, I would give Williard the height advantage, and I don't much about Sullivan. still though, I can see Williard winning by late TKO.

Willard had the size and chin and power advantage. Sullivan was the craftier fighter, so that evens thing out.

Really though Sulli would have beat Jess pretty bad . Willard was not what I'd call a 'great' fighter but he got lucky with a old Johnson. He may have been good with the more tech type of boxers of his era but when it came down to him fighting a true brawler like Dempsey he was no match. Sullivan was the truest brawler you can find he fought no gloves and unlimited rounds often out of shape yet came out the better man in most cases . I just don't think Willard had the heart or chin to handle such a man .

I did some research and there was a heavyweight contender Peter Jackson, called "the black prince" who fought jim corbett to a pair of 61 round draw, he didnt get a title shot because the champion John L.sullivan refused to fight black fighters.

John Sullivan did change his veiws later in life and became a bible thumper of some sort . I don't know if this also changed his veiws on race but in all fairness he was only a product of his times. He had in fact called black fighter disrespectful names and did refuse to fight them. But there were others doing much greater injustice at that time .

I did some research and there was a heavyweight contender Peter Jackson, called "the black prince" who fought jim corbett to a pair of 61 round draw, he didnt get a title shot because the champion John L.sullivan refused to fight black fighters.

The fight soon became a symbolic battleground for the races. The media, eager for a "Great White Hope", found a champion for their racism and bigotry in Jeffries. He said, "I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro."[1] A furor was created at the fight, as a ringside band played, "All coons look alike to me" and promoters encouraged an all-white crowd to chant "Kill the ******"[2].

Jeffries' belief in his own white superiority was quite literally destroyed, as he was knocked out in the 15th round. Johnson, who was not a big puncher by heavyweight championship standards, proved a stronger and smarter adversary. It didn't take long for Jeffries to realize he had made a big mistake. It was obvious to all that this was not the same Jeffries who had reigned as champion. Jeffries was unable to bull Johnson around, as he had every other ring opponent he faced. Jeffries, who had been known for his seemingly superhuman stamina, faded under the midday Reno heat. Aside from a few flashes of the Jeffries of old, the results of the fight were never in doubt.

Jeffries made no excuses at the time. However, later in his biography he implied that he had been drugged prior to meeting Johnson. Johnson, in his own biography, named Jeffries as the greatest heavyweight of all time.

In those silent films of his fights, Johnson was a remarkable boxer, he fought tirelessly in bouts lasting 20 rounds and longer, a wily giant, his counterpunching style was acceptable for a black fighter at the turn of the last century, when race riots might follow an outcome of the fight, It was writer Jack london who embarked on a crusade to lure former champion jeffries out of six year retirement, In a desperate search to find someone who would conquer Johnson, but Jeffries was no match, he was easily mocked and outbox, At age 35, he succumbed to the pressure and shed nearly 80 pounds to challenge Jack Johnson.

He still should have eventually realized that it was wrong.
