View Full Version : Who had the best style?
ceboxer15 02-25-2007, 08:38 PM okay, you've got two types of fighters: there's a boxer and a slugger.
which fighter in your opinion, was the best "boxer"?
also, which fighter in your opinion, was the best "slugger"?
my picks:
boxer: Sugar Ray Robinson
slugger: George Foreman
swarmer: Joe Frazier
brownpimp88 02-25-2007, 08:44 PM I always loved michael spinks style of fighting. Cuz i know he would have bothered tunney, moore and ezzard. He has to have one of the wierdiest styles i have ever seen, but i like it.
VERSATILE2K12 02-25-2007, 08:51 PM boxer:sugar way leonard
slugger:dlh
swarmer:tyson
Each mixed elements of the other style into their games, but since I rate them as the two greatest fighters of all-time, I'm taking Robinson & Langford respectively.
The Raging Bull 02-26-2007, 07:27 AM Boxer: Pep
Slugger: Marciano
Swarmer: Frazier
Dempsey 1919 02-26-2007, 03:03 PM For me it's
boxer: Muhammad Ali
slugger: Sonny Liston
swarmer: Henry Armstrong
Southpaw Stinger 02-26-2007, 03:13 PM For me it's
boxer: Muhammad Ali
slugger: Sonny Liston
swarmer: Henry Armstrong
I'd class Liston as more of a boxer puncher than a slugger.
Dempsey 1919 02-26-2007, 03:16 PM I'd class Liston as more of a boxer puncher than a slugger.
Which is exactly what makes him a better slugger than let's say Foreman or Baer, because he had skill to go along with his punching abilities, making his slugging more effective.

I thought the purpose of the thread was to sort out the best of individual styles. I wouldn't say that Liston was much of a slugger at all he was a highly skilled boxer who packed an immensly hard punch.
brownpimp88 02-26-2007, 03:19 PM Spinks is much better than norton with the unorthodox style cuz he actually had a chin and ko power. Whenever ken norton would try and put pressure on a big puncher, he was made to look stupid. Foreman pushed him around like a basketball, shavers blasted him and gerry cooney nearly killed the poor dude.

He was a boxer-puncher, but he was more of a puncher than a boxer, so if you had to classify him as one thing, it would be puncher IMO.

And one of the best at that :)

Damn skippy!
The Raging Bull 02-26-2007, 05:05 PM For me it's
boxer: Muhammad Ali
slugger: Sonny Liston
swarmer: Henry Armstrong
Ok, you got me there. Armstrong was the complete swarmer. Never stopped punching.
King Koyle 02-28-2007, 12:51 PM Boxer:Willie Pep
Slugger:Rocky Marciano
-Hyperion- 02-28-2007, 01:25 PM boxer: Ray Robinson
slugger: Big George
swarmer: Armstrong and Ouma(i just like the guy)
unorthodox: Roy Jones Jr

when he got hurt he threw big power shots IMO that makes him a puncher. boxers cover, move or jab their way out of trouble

:fing02:...
hemichromis 02-28-2007, 06:33 PM boxer: Ray Robinson
slugger: Big George
swarmer: Armstrong and Ouma(i just like the guy)
unorthodox: Roy Jones Jr
roy jones is hard to pigeon hole isn;t he?
some people group roy ali and both sugar rays together as 'free style' boxers
Jim_Davis 02-28-2007, 06:33 PM Everyone knows Hamed was the best slugger. He was primarily a slugger.

lol, yeah hes kinda hard to classify, but i think ali was a "flashy" boxer not that much of a free style, robinson was just so fast that he looked strange, but he was a boxer that sometimes slugged and he was the best a throwing combinations.
jones is just ****ing strange, he does a lot of thhings wrong but was so damn good he got aay with it, though when he was in against a dangerous opponent, he was a very good boxer counterpuncher, much like his style in the amateurs
