View Full Version : Pernell Whittaker vs Ray Leonard
Italian250 10-13-2004, 09:57 AM In their primes at welter. Could've been one of the most unbelievable performances of all time. Or..one of the most boring. I believe both would've respected each other so much that neither would have taken many chances. And the winner is...
LuKahnLi 10-13-2004, 09:59 AM Damn.....this is a great match....
I gotta go with Leonard. He was fast enough and he would throw enough punches to outwork Pea.
Leonard W15.
jabsRstiff 10-13-2004, 10:13 AM Leonard would have TKO'd Whitaker in the late rds.
Whitaker was hittable at 147. Leonard was lightning fast, & had underrated power at 147.

Tito couldn't put away a shot used up Pea. I have trouble seeing Leonard being able to.
without a doubt, sugar ray.... i dont even like him, but his will to win was unmeasurable... didnt matter who you were, ray found a way to beat you and he would do what ever it took to do it
LuKahnLi 10-13-2004, 10:45 AM Guru.....you are from the HBO forum right?
oldgringo 10-13-2004, 10:50 AM Ray probably steals it from Pea in a horrible split decision like he did Hagler. There's no way SRL KO's Pea in his prime. He wouldn't hit him enough or hard enough to do that.
I'm gonna say Pernell by UD but it's entirely possible that Ray could win this too.
jabsRstiff 10-13-2004, 11:21 AM "There's no way SRL KO's Pea in his prime."
Whitaker was NOT in his prime at 147.
Buddy McGirt.....Oscar....Rivera...
They ALL connected on Whitaker.
None of them were as fast, powerful, or as good as Ray Leonard.
Pernell Whitaker is one of the great fighters of all time. But you all are overrating him at 147.
ray Leonard, at 147, is one of the greatest fighters in history.
mic573 10-13-2004, 11:29 AM At 147 Leonard beats Whitaker. Pound for pound at their best I think Whitaker's defense will clown Leonard at times enough to win a close decision. Leonard is quick but Whitaker's defense was just incredible.

jabs knows what he's talking about. Leonard in late round tko.
bigdlb12 10-13-2004, 11:51 AM very good match up, I will say SRL only because he alway tend to keeping going, good speed and ok power. a 12 round tech fight (boxing)
oldgringo 10-13-2004, 11:52 AM I didn't read Italian saying welter...just prime.
Pea was at his best at 135 and 140...I still do not think that Leonard KO's Pea at 147.
Pea was already on the decline by the time he fought Oscar and he kept it very close. In fact, he could have managed the decision had he been more aggressive throughout the fight. He scored the KD, but it was not enough...I still thought Oscar won but it was very close. Oscar never hurt him.
SRL was a welterweight king. I agree that if a young, lively Tito couldn't KO a shot Pea at 147 then SRL couldn't have done it either...especially if it was the Pea that beat McGirt and Rivera.
I think "prime" for respective "prime", Pea beats SRL by close decision.
oldgringo 10-13-2004, 11:54 AM Let me add that I think SRL beats Pea at 147 by UD.
Guru.....you are from the HBO forum right?
that is me
JOM'S 10-13-2004, 01:16 PM IT HANDS DOWN SUGAR RAY LEONARD, the guy who TKO'd Hearns in his prime, the guy who Decision Hagler in his prime, the guy who frustrated Duran in his prime, I dont think the sweet pea can beat any one of this guys at their prime so how can Pernel beat the sugarman....
acquitted 10-13-2004, 03:14 PM this fight would be like de la hoya vs whitaker....whitaker dosent throw enough punches to beat offensive minded fighters...leonard by easy decision
