UFC.tv: What is your response to Phil Baroni's comments made at UFC.tv?
Matt Lindland : It was cute. He makes a lot of excuses for his loss but the whole tough guy thing is adorable. I love that act. It has worked so well for years in pro-wrasslin. Keep it up Phil, the fans love it. Great interview Phil.
UFC.tv: What are your thoughts on Phil's visit to train with Team Quest? How accurate is his side of the story?
Matt Lindland: Phil came up for awhile. When he showed up we did our best to show him some hospitality. We also tried to work with him, but it was like trying to teach a dog a card trick. I can still remember the glazed expression, the utter lack of comprehension on his face, as we tried in vain to go over the simplest techniques. We agreed pretty quickly to treat him kind of like a "fresh air fund" kid, walk him around the countryside and bring him to a petting zoo to keep him occupied. Not much else happened. He wasn't physically or mentally worthy of dealing with.
UFC.tv: Why do you think he's acting like this?
Matt Lindland: You don't have to be Freud to figure this one out. Phil is very insecure. He has never accomplished anything noteworthy outside of the UFC, and he knows that without his persona as a fighter, he has no identity. He is a cipher. Because of that, he is desperate and afraid. And like all cowards, he is vicious. If he is reading this, I want him to know I understand, and I forgive him. He is fighting to preserve a fraudulent image created out of a lack of self-esteem and perpetuated by fear.
UFC.tv: We know how he saw the first fight. Tell us how you saw it.
Matt Lindland: Plenty has been written about the first fight; most notably on the three judge's scorecards. One thing to consider: I recall Phil swearing on a stack of bibles that I wouldn't take him down; but he spent most of our fight on his back, thrashing about frantically like a roach that had been sprayed with RAID.
UFC.tv: What's the story on the winner-take-all stipulation? Are you guys going to do that?
Matt Lindland: Nah, I want Phil to make money. I'm saving his friends a fortune by saying this. Who do you think he'll be hitting up for money for Dental bills post-fight? Can you imagine him outside your door, his Elvis glasses ridiculously askew on his horribly swollen, distorted face, trying to mumble a loan request through toothless, swollen gums, as your screaming wife calls 911 and your kids hide under the bed?
UFC.tv: Phil says that he is going to retire you. What do you have to say to that?
Matt Lindland: The only thing that might need retiring is going to be Phil's IROC-Z if I decide to give it four flats in the parking lot for a joke after I trounce him."
UFC.tv: Give us a prediction on the fight.
Matt Lindland: I am a professional athlete. I am a fighter. I have accomplished things in competitive athletics that Phil Baroni will never approach. And I will beat him, AGAIN!
UFC.tv: What would another victory over Phil mean for you?
Matt Lindland: Let’s talk about what it’s going to mean for Phil – that he’ll be back selling mixed disco tapes at that car wash in Brooklyn.
UFC.tv: Who are you looking forward to fighting next after Phil?
Matt Lindland: I will burn that bridge when I come to it.
UFC.tv: You’re training at the Pit in San Luis Obispo, California now with John Hackleman and Chuck Liddell. How did that come about and how is that going for you?
Matt Lindland: Chuck is one of the fighters that I have a ton of respect for, not only as a marital artist but also as person. We have always wanted to train together for a long time and the timing was right. Chuck and I have the same philosophies about fighting and he was a wrestler before he was a striker. In my opinion Chuck is the best striker in MMA. As far as John, we just met at the last UFC. He’s a great guy and a great trainer. He obviously is good, nobody can question that. First Chuck, and then did you see Gan [McGee]? Two wrestlers he turned into strikers all because of his skills as a trainer. Hawaiian Kempo - I am a believer. The Pit is where it’s at for striking.
UFC.tv: What do you think about Tank Abbott returning to the UFC?
Matt Lindland: I think it means Baroni’s going to have to come up with an original shtick.
