View Full Version : Liverpool FC taken over by American Tycoons-Good news or bad for the game?
MickyHatton 02-07-2007, 10:16 AM American tycoons George Gillett and Tom Hicks have reached an agreement to take over Liverpool.
This means the shareholders will be paid around five thousand pounds a share, the sixty thousand seater stadium can be started within eight weeks, the academy and youth program will be revamped and its estimated that over five years up to 400 Million pounds will be made available for transfers!
Also most importantly all current debt will be wiped out leaving the club firmly in the black for the first time in decades!
This is obviously great news for Liverpool FC but what will it do for football, do we need foreign investors taking over the game, or will this stop the likes of Chelsea and Man U having the monopoly on the English game?

George Gillette Bought My Home town Hockey team The Montreal Canadiens.. and Its been the best thing that happened to the team..
He pumped in Extra cash and brought the team back to repsectabilty
At first everyone decried the fact that a proud Canadian tradition would be in the hands of a YANK..
DOnt fear the man he loves sports and respects their traditions
The Raging Bull 02-07-2007, 10:27 AM You beat me to it Micky. I've been trying to find a decent article to go with it, but **** it.
I think it's good news for our club because we can now keep up with all the other clubs who are being invested into by foreign businessmen. These guys also know what they are doing in the sports business, having owned NHL teams for a number of years.
But I don't like the idea of foreign investors into our clubs. It is ruining our league and there is no level ground for all clubs anymore. The top four are just going to pull further and further away from the chasing pack.
And concerning our (Liverpool's) fans, I think a few are over-reacting over the new owners calling us a franchise and 'Liverpool reds'. Their dialect will be different because they are used to calling teams names like that and in America teams are viewed as businesses to the owners, which is why they called us a franchise. And in truth, we are!
Just as long as they keep true to their promise of us becoming the greatest team in the world, I'll be ok
MickyHatton 02-07-2007, 11:01 AM On a personal level guys I am very impressed with both the men.
Looking at what they have done in baseball and hockey is impressive enough but they spoke passionately about the heritage of the club and are confident that they will bring success. That suits me fine, I have no problem with nationality or culture, the best man for the best job and I am confident with the new owners!

I watched this the night they took over. Both of them seemed to know a lot about the Shankly era and the barren run of the 90's.
Then they admitted they went on the internet :lol1:
But I'm glad we've got some decent owners who care about sport and will give us backing. Also nice to hear that the stadium planning is underway now too.
Plus, to Welter Skelter, thanks for the reasssurances :fing02:
adietheforestfa 02-08-2007, 08:05 PM Who care, bunch of scouse scumbags.
Are you lot still singing that we hate nottingham forest song.
hub cap stealing, shell suit waring, work shy, touchy twats.
Ever knocked us out of Europe - NO

Larry Merchant 02-08-2007, 08:25 PM it will be a great idea cuz Liverpool might win it all this year

What's your problem mate? It's two Liverpool fans talking about an important moment in our history, and you come in here giving us ****? Why?
And no, we don't sing the Nottingham Forest song, why would we, seeing as you're in league one and we probably won't play you again for the next half-century at least in the league :lol1:
And to say I used to respect and like Forest and their fans :nonono:

No, we only sing about decent sides, for example those who are in the Champions league or even the Premier League!
You shouldn't concern yourself with what Liverpool is up to, just worry about the likes of Notts County and how long you will keep your current manager this time!
Oh yeah, you mention Europe - you are the only club to have won more European Cups than League Titles and considering you only won two European Cups then.....be proud.
We will concentrate on Barca in the Champions League whilst remembering our 5 European Cups oh and 18 league titles (as well as many more honours)
kayjay 02-09-2007, 10:31 AM Bull you never answered me: is Mascherano actually going to PLAY for Liverpool. I don't get that move at all.

Oh sorry KayJay.
Once the English FA approves of the move, he's our player (on loan of course) and then he can play. And yes, I feel he'll become an important member of the squad because Rafa likes to rotate and have 'options', especially in the midfield. So he should fit right in.

Fair Enough, but we may have won more in Europe if it wasnt for your morons getting us kicked out of Europe for 5 years when we were a good side.
My Hatred of Liverpool goes back to 89 cup semi replay at Old Trafford. After What happened at Sheffield ( I was there, I have so much sympathy for those poor fans ) Your fans behaviour at replay was well out of order after what had happened. Plus John Aldridge takin piss out of Brian Laws was out of order. I Know we could never have won that game, not that it mattered anyway. But your fans should have been a bit less hostile and coin throwing is well out of order when there are women and kids in crowd. I saw a young woman hit by a Coin from Liverpool supporters, it was sickening. I know its not all liverpool fans but it leaves a bad taste. Ill try and resist posting on Liverpool Threads in future, dont mean to piss anyone off, just hits a nerve.

Fair comment, there are good and bad fans for every side! Not sure what you mean about Aldridge and Laws though? What did he do?

Yes, I'm sure he will, Rafa likes to rotate so Mascherano will I'm sure play a part somewhere. Its difficult with Gerrard, Alonso and Sissoko to see him being in week in week out though!

He ruffled his hair as Lawsy sat in back of net after second goal. Which was own goal. Timing not good
