View Full Version : Hip Hop's effect on Black stereotypes? platinummatt! 02-03-2007, 11:34 AM Do you think Hip Hop has a negative affect on black stereotyping with all the gangsts ****. If it was a big mix of black and white then it wouldnt be like that, but its mainly black people who are in hip hop res 02-03-2007, 11:48 AM Well Hp Hop was around before gangster rap. it is not hip hop that turned blacks into gangsters it's blacks that turned hip hop into all of this gangsta stuff. Why did we do it? because it was marketable. j 02-03-2007, 09:20 PM Well Hp Hop was around before gangster rap true. however, that talentless **** that is so pop today is that gangsta ****. to me, it's far worse than any violent video game or movie as it is more widespread. movie are movies. games are games. but music, it has an impact on both games and movies, not to even mention radio and cd's etc. one point i'm trying to make here is that it is becoming less of a stereotype and more of a truth. the whole image of being gangsta - the mannerisms, style of dress, speech, accepted activities, etc that is expounded in gangsta rap is being glorified by today's and even yesterday's (mainly black) youth. do i think rap and hip hop have a negative effect on black stereotypes? yeah, i do - that is if we are talking about gangsta rap. it is not really hip hop's fault though, it's mostly because so much rap has turned into posing like a hardass and there are so many punk ass *****es trying to act out the **** they hear. and i love rap and hip hop culture - i grew up with it. -Antonio- 02-04-2007, 02:49 AM Yes, a very large effect. Thats why the NBA is trying to get as far away from Hip Hop as they can. platinummatt! 02-04-2007, 11:46 AM Interesting, as boxing seems to be getting more associated with hip hop Welter_Skelter 02-04-2007, 12:33 PM I would say its the Other way around... ANd Black ganstaz have had a negative affect on the Image of HIP HOP In the beginning rap was just another dance music with a bit of a social commentary.. jspivey 02-04-2007, 10:06 PM Todays rapper image does project a negative stereotype.Gangsters I've seen don't rap. And even when gangsta rap was big NWA, Ice Cube, MC Eiht, Doggpound, Eazy E, all gangsta rappers with substance. They could talk about gangsta sh*t, switch to some party sounds, or get political. The music today would be classified as gangsta but these clowns today just want a check. They have no regard to what they say, make a whole album about selling crack and claim what a M.C. they are. They probably don't look at their contracts twice. And then there are white people who've never met or seen a black person except for whats in videos and they think we're all like that. res 02-04-2007, 11:51 PM true. however, that talentless **** that is so pop today is that gangsta ****. to me, it's far worse than any violent video game or movie as it is more widespread. movie are movies. games are games. but music, it has an impact on both games and movies, not to even mention radio and cd's etc. one point i'm trying to make here is that it is becoming less of a stereotype and more of a truth. the whole image of being gangsta - the mannerisms, style of dress, speech, accepted activities, etc that is expounded in gangsta rap is being glorified by today's and even yesterday's (mainly black) youth. do i think rap and hip hop have a negative effect on black stereotypes? yeah, i do - that is if we are talking about gangsta rap. it is not really hip hop's fault though, it's mostly because so much rap has turned into posing like a hardass and there are so many punk ass *****es trying to act out the **** they hear. and i love rap and hip hop culture - i grew up with it. That movies don't have as much of an impact is debatable. Depends on how you define impact. Where do the models for alot modern rappers come from? Characters like Scarface, played by Al Pacino and Al Capone played by Rober De niro in popular movies. Everyone knows that the Italian Mafia are the ultimate idols of modern urban gangster wannabes and it was American cinema that has glorified these figures for decades. Infact it is still being done in shows like the Sopranos. Black culture is a part of American culture and is influenced by it. Jim_Davis 02-05-2007, 12:56 AM Interesting, as boxing seems to be getting more associated with hip hop That's because boxing is all about smashing the **** out of some guy's head and rappers think they can smash the **** out of anyone's head. Bucktown Beast 02-05-2007, 12:57 AM Ya know black people have tremendous dicks. But I don't believe it. j 02-05-2007, 02:08 AM res, never said movies do not have an impact. just from my perspective, i've seen music as a bigger one on a day to day basis. and believe me, it's not like i don't have experience in some things, and am pulling rabbits outta my hat. res 02-05-2007, 03:16 PM res, never said movies do not have an impact. just from my perspective, i've seen music as a bigger one on a day to day basis. and believe me, it's not like i don't have experience in some things, and am pulling rabbits outta my hat. Oh I know, you said that there was less of an impact. No I was making the case for equal impact by arguing that movies images of the past influenced current music. |
