View Full Version : Out of sight, Out of mind
Money 01-10-2003, 03:23 PM The problem with MMA's is that when you have a lull between events like for the last month, people tend to forget it.
And the last Pride was nothing special.
We need top cards on a regular basis or you will lose the casual fans.
I love MMAs but lately due to the lack of great fights, I have been following football.
What are your thoughts?
Tanner Rhoden 01-10-2003, 03:28 PM You should follow the smaller shows and their fighters.
wondermut 01-10-2003, 03:45 PM I think the smaller events are just as exciting. I wish there were more of them.
Money 01-10-2003, 03:49 PM Sorry guys, I can't agree with you. Watching the smaller shows is akin to watching Division 2 football or Canadian League football. Sure it is exciting but it's not the big leagues
Tanner Rhoden 01-10-2003, 03:53 PM So you don't believe that some of the fighters you're watching on the smaller shows, will be the future stars of tomorrow?
wondermut 01-10-2003, 03:54 PM Do you train? I think that has a lot to do with it. I lke watching the events because it is exciting and I learn a lot. Plus when you step into some of these smaller events, you can feel the electricity in the air.
Money 01-10-2003, 03:57 PM Sure I don't doubt that there will be some future stars in the smaller shows but I would rather see them make it up to Pride or the UFC before seeing them.
I am a huge MMAs fan but only for the top events. Sort of like most sports fans, they follow the best events not the minor ones.
Wondermutt, I don't train and that is probably part of the problem.
Tanner Rhoden 01-10-2003, 04:01 PM get on AIM, Money
I'm TannerBJJ there
momita 01-10-2003, 06:35 PM Too bad for you money, mma is past present & future fighters. There is so much "new" talent out there, I think you are missing out on the beginnings of new talent, you will be discussing soon on this very forum. It's fine to discuss the old timers, but really, to watch a new fighter get discovered is the most amazing thing to witness! To me, every event is a grand event, every new fighter deserves recognition! Sad to say tho, there are many just like you who only want to see big names, do you not understand that watching the new ones now, wanting to know more about them..... makes them the BIG LEAGUE. Fans who follow only the major events in any sport are not in my book huge fans, they are part time fans. Enjoy your football.
DOGGx0 01-10-2003, 06:40 PM Money,
u have some valid points. But i agree with momita, tanner and Wonder. its all about the technique and show. Not about the big shows as much, anymore. For example, there are more smaller shows, than bigger shows.
Sure, I would never go watch a HS football/ baseball or basketball game, but i could definately watch people beating the **** out of eachother ALL day. Its just the sport. I can watch it regardless. Whether it is Tito Ortiz beating up Ken Shamrock (the same ol' people we see over and over and over and over again), or I can go for watching Jeremy Jackson KOing 3 guys in the same night. I really don't see the difference, except there is alot more competition in this sport and much more of a view of who is going to be great in this sport. The other ones, seem to have alot of "extras", people that are just there to make the team complete. This is not about a team, it is about 1 man, giving everything he has in his fight for self-respect.
momita 01-10-2003, 06:41 PM P.S. Money is a casual fan. BAN HIM.....................
Purity 01-11-2003, 01:36 AM you're also watching football near the super bowl so whaddya expect?
momita 01-11-2003, 11:01 AM Sorry Money, I just can't believe you don't find it exciting to watch the start of the up & coming, I mean, to be there from the beginning and see them grow, to become one of the best. Were you there at the start of Gracie, or Shamrock? They didn't just "fall" into the big league. I'm sure they became what we talk about because of their early fights. And now here we are able to be involved in alot of the young fighters start, their struggles to "reach" the top, and because of MMA forums, be able to encourage and support them, from the beginning! Look at the fighters on this forum, do you not think they go thru the same things as those before them? Do they have less heart? To know that there are people who support & care makes a world of difference, and is motivation in the highest sense. If I were giving my all to something I loved, I hope I wouldn't be discouraged by the people who only care about what I will become, instead of
encouraging & cheering me on in every event I participate in while I'm getting there!
Waylander 01-11-2003, 11:21 AM In alot of areas you only get a choice of the UFC or Pride to watch. I understand what you are saying money, and agree in some aspects, however given the chance to be exposed to more events in my area, even on a smaller scale, i would be thrilled about.
