no diss to apun but I give it to Ra. Rakim's flow in his era was second to none, maybe Big Daddy Kane but that's it. Ra had a presence on the mic his flow wasn't too fast or too slow, it was just right. Combined with his lyrical ability his voice was sharp.

Man, you should have made it a lyrical comparison, In the area of delivery it isn't even close, Rakim.

I'm a huge fan for both.

But they were two different deliveries...

Big Pun could switch his delivery up when Rakim was consistently the same kind of rhymer. And honestly Pun came off much more thorough than Rakim. The way he dropped on certain verses like 'Pina Colada' or 'Triplets' was straight hard as ****. Rakim was the smoother flower and was always liquid, but Puns delivery was more intense.

I'm certain that people who are so quick to discredit or write Pun off have never really listened to his material. He easily earned the place to be mentioned or debated with against all time great MCs.

I've listened to quite a few of his material, i think he truly deserves to be top 20, possibly top 15 yet compared to RAKIM :nono:

Yea but we are talking about style/delivery. Pun's delivery was fierce and his lyrics are as good as anyone to do it. I don't think its far fetched to compare his style to Ra.

His clever punchlines actually far surpass Rakim's. Lyrically Pun can be considered top 3 to do it, the wit in his lyrics was genius and exceptional.

Not true at all.

If you are from the West Coast you likely wont give Pun his props. I noticed that Pun's excellence as an mc is mainly appreciated on the East.

Thats fine to like Rakim more, I aint knockin ya, hes the man. Just pointing out that alot of people outside of the East Coast (particularly NY/NJ area) havent had the exposure to Pun and don't know about his skills like they should.

The man is definitely an all time great MC/lyricist. Thats all.

I'm from California and Big Pun is one of my favorite rappers of all time, he is truly ****ing amazing...

To the dumb ****s that can't read the title of the thread, it says who has the better rap style....not who's the better lyricist....

Even though Ra is the G.O.A.T......his flow was a lil boring....

Word. I can upload alot of unreleased/underground Pun tracks that you probably never heard.

My badddd, If we're talkin style/delivery like the topic suggests i'd say Pun....

If we're talkin lyrics.. then no way jose!!! Pun dont com close to RAKIM.... Lyrically only BIG, Nas & maybe tupac are in the same boat as RA.

i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree!!!!

Rakim is one of my favorites. But he never said some said some ultra witty, metaphorical stuff that made you rewind a couple of times before you understood it. He just had an uncanny knack for a smooth ass flow matched with on point timing and rhyming ability. He was a natural, plain and simple.

But Pun said some mind blowing things. If you read their rhymes on paper, Pun's would actually come out to be much more complex.

Well Rakim did not have witty punchlines, his punchlines were more like Nas' punchlines. The thing is alot of Rakim's lyrics don't make you think, they just fly right over your head. Here is an example. How are the three lines i have in bold here related? Think about the first line i have in bold, it sets the context for the other two (and for many other lines in the verse as well) Rakim never leaves an idea behind, he always comes back for it. And the three lines i put in bold are just one example in this verse.

, ,
Just when things seemed the same, and the whole scene is lame
I come and reign with the unexplained for the brains 'til things change
They strain to sling slang, I'm trained to bring game
History that I arranged been regained by King James
Go to practice, with tactics, when the track hits, theatrics
Women that look like actresses, status of Cleopatra's
Stacks of mathematics to feed you asiatics
As I find out, what the facts is, for geographics
No time to sip Mo's with hostess, never mind what the total gross is
I rip shows, stay focused, and split cheese, with soldiers
While you hit trees and coast I spit flows that be ferocious
And with these explosives, I split seas for Moses
Shine permanently only my mind's concernin me
Fire burns in me eternally time's eternity
Followers turn on me they'll be in a mental infirmary
Determinely advance technology better than Germany
Since the first days you know of, till the last days is over
I was always the flow-er, I made waves for Noah
From a compound, to the anatomy, to the breakdown of an atom
Some of my rap patterns, still surround Saturn
From the ancient hieroglyphics, to graffiti painted pictures
I study I know the scriptures but nowaday ain't it vicious
Date back I go beyond, check the holy Qu'ran
To speeches at the autobahn, now we get our party on
So being benificent, I bless em with dialogue
They expectin the next testament, by the God
I roam through battlezones with chrome for chaperone
Blast beat with saxophones one of the baddest rappers known
Every country city and borough, sidestreet and ghetto
Isle and alley and meadow, theories thorough enough to echo
When it was one mass of land, with one nash' of man
And the whole mass was ran under one master plan
Since the world's metamorphis, and the plan is kept in orbit
Turntables we spin awkward but needles never skip off it
Rhythms we expressin similar to our ancestors
It'll answer your questions if you understand the message
From the days of the slave choppers, to the new age of prophets
As heavy as hip-hop is I'm always ready to drop it
From the mind which is one of Allah's best designs
And mines'll stand the test of time, when I rhyme

The 18th Letter, the prophecy professor
I stay clever, long as the planet stay together
Bring up praise from Mecca, make a phrase for the better
In new days to remember, always and forever
(repeat 2X)

The R baby

Yea Ra would slip in some ill ****. His references were subtle.

This verse is one of my favorites:

Rakim and Primo, yo I got what you need bro
You go see a show, smoke an El Nino
And deejays play hits with hard bass kicks
And then they display tricks like The Matrix
Make the record fly undetected by the naked eye
So just feel the vibe 'cause your ears never lie
Nowadays deejays bags of tricks, graphic
On some behind the back ****, catch it and scratch it
Classic, this kid got his craft mastered
Hands is mad quick like he mix withmagic
Spin it back and forth and grab it, and know just where it
is...
There it is
