View Full Version : could vera tai clinch liddell to victory like silva did franklin?
outofit 01-28-2007, 05:52 PM or is liddell all to familiar with kickboxing? Or maybe Vera's size advantage would help in that regard. That's only if the fight stays a stand up fight which it probably would. I always thought that would be an interesting fight because it is a mui tai guy vs another one who is more experienced and has conformed his style more toward a well rounded mma defense. But in that regard the fresher younger fighter would also be more likely to compromise his defense by throwing higher kicks and being more aggressive which isn't all that bad of a thing either. It could be a good thing or a bad thing. Watching that full minute silva held franklin in that clinch started me thinking in this direction. And no this fight hasn't been announced at all it's just a what if.
Atnan 01-28-2007, 11:47 PM vera COULD easily knock chuck liddell out....his striking is amazing and he for sure has the power.....every real mma-fight fan knows this ( even the pros do) its just that he might be too green and when the bell rings, hes gonna be scared ****less and break down! based on styles...i see vera as a better condition and better ground game allistar overreem, and liddel was getting his ass kicked before he gassed! i see vera/liddell getting wild, only to have vera on top subbing him

who have you seen vera fight that makes you think he can easily take liddell??
Dont think vera has the experience yet to deal with someone like chuck, he'd probablly go for the KO in the first round and get caught himself.. chuck seems pretty good at steppign off to the side and countering with deadly hooks.. Like you though i agree the guy needs to face a striker no more can feeding for liddell.. yes a guy that beats shamrock3x and a TUFFER is a can..

vera knocks out heavy-weights, he wont have any trouble knocking out liddell...i said he COULD**** knock out liddell as in he has the tools to do it...i dont think vera needs anymore experience really i mean the next step for him is to fight a champion, win or lose hes gonna become a better fighter from it!
outofit 01-29-2007, 05:30 PM those that just can't picture it from his previous performances have to remeber that the pace of a lhw fight and a hw one is vast. Vera at 205 would look much quicker much more dangerous. I love that guy he reminds me of tong po in the kickboxer movie, except more badass.

for some reason, i want to see more and more of vera...hes very exciting and finsihes his fights! he hasnt had any real trouble in any of his fights and seems to steam roll right thru them....he finished a guy (Assuerio Silva) who both tim sylvia and Aleksander Emelianenko couldnt finish which is amazing and beat a guy ( frank mir) who broke tim sylvia`s arm with ease! i have no doubt in my mind that vera would whopp timmy ass let alone give chuck a run for his money!
LHWchamp5 01-30-2007, 05:24 PM IMO he's sloppy and like chuck he's yet to face a decent striker, decent opponent for that matter..
did you see the fabiano/vera fight?? vera had to pretty much wait till the guy gassed before he had an oppertunity to finish him, it also looked like fabiano was hurt him a few times..
I wanna see vera on his back, i wanna see him be outstriked by his opponent.. then we'll see how good he his.. Will he panick?? will he figure a way to turn tables when losing?? how good is his corner??
because UFC's HW division is so shallow the guys he has fought are not good competition, if he was to face the top of the HW division he would lose..
meh let him fight chuck, lets ssee what happnes, u never know what could happen
outofit 01-30-2007, 05:34 PM i wouldn't mind seeing him tested against another hw i like who isn't much mentioned of late also, paul buentello. Although he may gas too but he is an awesome striker and he will definately trade, hell he wasn't afraid to trade with arlovski even.

vera striking being sloppy? excuse me? your a ****ing moron, hes anything but sloppy, he throws straight down the pipe punches! unlike chuck who is sloppy as ****!
i indeed saw the fight with fabiano and he didnt wait till he gassed, i dont no what fight u watched...i saw a good stand up fight which i saw vera take 2-3 good shots ( he was no one near being hurt) and vera landing good strikes of his own! then the fight went to the ground and fabioano got subbed quickly! simple as that...and remember who vera trains with, his ground game is superior to any ufc heavy-weights (except for maybe pe da pano) and he FINISHED FABIANO, something tim sylvia couldnt do!
he will fight amazing from his back, just based on who he trains with ( one of the best jui-jitsu guys alive)!
he has fought everyone in the " top heavyweight devision" u ****ing moron...ufc doesnt have a top divison, all they have is cro-cop, aa, and tim sylvia - everyone else is c- class! hes fought everyone except tim sylvia/aa...and he knocked out frank mir, the same guy who broke tim syvlia is 3
he will not get out struck by anyone except for cro-cop! and his corner is amazing! do some homework before you type some bull **** like that! get the **** outta my face

never will happen! i think their gonna put in vera aganist andrei or just give him a title shot ( thats if he gets his contract bull**** straight) buentello is not in the ufc anymore!
1bad65 01-31-2007, 03:47 PM Technique wise, its not too hard to get out of a Thai clinch (its also called a 'plum' clinch by some). You just have to know how and practice it in the gym.
I was shocked that Franklin looked lost when he was in that clinch.
i3raintwo 01-31-2007, 05:25 PM thats not exactly true, i train in muay thai. there is a couple of ways to hold someone in a clinch and it does depend if youre working the body or head. when youre holding someone in the clinch and want to work the body you squeeze your forearms together and dig your elbows into their chest. thats a lot harder then it looks to get out of then when youre just trying to knee someone in the face. when going to the face you have to leave a gap open to get your knee through and so its easier for them to slip outta it.
outofit 01-31-2007, 07:01 PM i'm not expert but i thought it was a beautifull example of keeping the other guy off ballance, which should be the first thing you try and do in the clinch situation. You could see that Franklin was just trying to get planted to punch out of it a lot and just could never get his ballance, a thing of beauty. In the same idea that your position always comes first the same is true for keeping the other guy in the position you want him in too, which is off ballance. I see too many just grab the head and try and launch a knee into it without pulling them off ballance first. It's just like a pet peave of mine, like throwing a superman punch after not throwing a single kick the whole fight to set it up.
1bad65 01-31-2007, 07:02 PM I agree, once you are clinched tight its tough to escape especially if you are being knee'd. My point was you need to make it second nature to escape VERY quickly. Not only did Franklin not try and get out fast, he looked clueless as to how to actually escape it.

if your liddell it's quite easy, distract vera with an eye poke then set him up with the left hook.. Isnt that how it always happens??
i3raintwo 02-01-2007, 01:33 PM ^haha sometimes i dont know if i should argue with you about somethings or just laugh. but i have to agree and laugh about that.

no ufc nuthuggers arguing that one?? i'm surprised they didnt' try to blame it on his opponents for having big eye sockets...thats the kind of stupid logic i would expect from somebody dumb enough to PAY to watch the ufc.
Atnan 02-02-2007, 02:36 PM indeed chucky does poke people`s eyes real often....i mean its like almost every fight! getting outta the clinch isnt that hard, but its not easy...you train on it for a while to get a hang of it! what i always do it what couture taught me ( just push up straight forward and explode)
