Hey guys haven't stepped into the ring yet but was wondering what your reaction and how you felt after you took your first solid punch.

Puked in a trash can in the corner of the gym. Freaked me right out.

EDIT: Whatever happens, don't be ashamed of your reaction. Everybody remembers their first big punch, and the reaction was different for everyone at your gym. Some people laugh it off, some people get pissed, some people bawl like schoolgirls, and some guys hang up their gloves right there.

Boxing HURTS. A LOT.

What matters is whether or not you come back the next day after taking your first heavy punch -- that hit that makes you bleed, or leaves you on your knees gasping like a fish with slivers of black glass stabbing into your eyes (liver punch, anyone?)

The next day, around gym-time, is when you'll know FOR SURE whether or not this is your sport.

Good luck.

I would think it fair to give him more than a day? Or not?

Not more than two days. You'll just know, the next day. I promise. You'll know whether or not you are insane enough to pursue this as a hobby -- if you can handle getting hit like that regularly. Because you will.

Personally, I went back the next night. Some guys at my gym had bet on whether or not I'd show. I didn't ask who or how much.

Someone here said, "Show them that you're tough on the inside and they'll teach you to be tough on the outside."

It shouldnt really bother you unless you take a FLUSH shot like right on the nose, or if you walk into a punch you dont see coming...

getting hit square on the nose with a hard shot... will make ya eyes watery and you'll be thinkin.....

lol

That is very true. You will likely take a couple of glancing blows first that you THINK are heavy, and right about the time you're thinking, "Hey, this isn't so bad," then out of nowhere:

:owned:

And then you'll need this:

:bottle:

I took it pretty well but thats cause I knew what to expect. I knew there will be a world of pain and that I will learn to love it.

with headgear it seems as if u feel the shots more. when i spar with no head gear it feels alot better if i take shots

I agree, when I was getting hit with no HG, the smaller area hurt, as opposed to having Hg, where half of my face hurt. Another factor is that without HG you could see the punches better.

The first blow I took in a combat situation was a heavy roundkick to the sternum from a 265 lb biker looking guy in a kickboxing gym. I weighed about 140 lbs. at the time, 14 years old. Took the wind out of me. I literally couldn't breath for about 20 seconds but it felt like much longer. Didn't go down but it sucked. If it were a real fight, and not sparring, I would have been KO'ed by the followup for sure.

First time I took a punch to the head in a boxing ring was to a smaller opponent. I thought "holy ****, I must have a glass chin, that ****ing felt so weird". There was a sudden surge of adrenaline but I held my ground and it subsided.

Truth is, getting hit, by anyone who knows how to punch, right on the chin sucks. If you're new, and have no headmovement, you'll know what it really is to get hit flush, something that rarely happens to the pros. People seem to think pros are just supernatural in the punishment they can take but the difference between the average boxer and a normal guy in that regard often times is his ring awareness. The good fighter sees the punches coming, even if its at the last second. Starting out, that probably won't even be the case. You're standing there ready to throw and punch and it's like there's a sudden flash and then you realize it's because you've been hit. More like an electrical shock than a pain. It still sucks.

Don't worry about it too much though or you might psyche yourself out. Just give it a try.

I got a flush uppercut right on my chin. I had this sudden flash in my eyes shook it off and kept going.

No pain till the day after.

I gotta say I got hit quite a bit, once I was standing with no guard thinking the round is over, I turn around and the guy blasts me so hard that my ear drum popped. (to this day I have ringing in my ear, its getting better though).

Each time it took a few seconds to get my full sight back, but I never felt like going down.

Dunno if its my big head or my big legs.

lol i have both a big head and HUGE legs. People always ask me how i got those big legs assuming i do alot of weights with em but i just have naturally MASSIVE legs. Its great because i got a fast upper body and a huge lower body for power shots

The first time I got hit in a boxing match was kinda like dejavu...From the past street fights and jumpings I had etc, it all came back to me what it was like to get punched. I think subconsciously your mind never forgets what its like to be hit in the head/face. It was all too familiar of a feeling.

The first time I ever sparred was against a 260lb, real heavy handed dude. I went ballistic on him in the first round and hit him with every possibly power punch I had. After that I was so god damn exhausted I couldnt do **** for the next two rounds. When all was said and done, I swear to god it felt like I had a brain hemmorrage. Iwas nauseous, dizzy and my heart felt like it was pumping through my head. I left that gym feeling like I got run over by a truck and was almost totally incapacitated for a few days. **** was rough.

Yeah there's just a loud crack, and then a ringing in your ears.

that's really all...but the thing is...you can't stand there in shock or else you'll get hit again and lose total consciousness.

Grab the guy that hit you...hold his arms etc. Clinch.
