View Full Version : Are there any notable fraternal matchups in boxing history?
kayjay 01-24-2007, 08:52 AM NSB is alive with Klitschko talk this morning, and it got me to wondering whether there have ever been any sizable (in importance) matchups between family members or more specifically brothers.
Enlighten me please.

I recall some talk of a potential Michael Spinks vs Leon Spinks fight in late 1985 after Leon defeated Kip Kane and won the WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight title. Leon was training out of Kronk Gym at the time and his career appeared to be on track. Michael at the time had just won the title from Larry Holmes as was the reigning heavyweight champion. I seem to recall Leon being more receptive to the fight than Michael was.
Michael instead made his first defence against Holmes while Leon dropped down to cruiserweight and challenged Dwight Muhammad Qawi.
Joe and Jimmy Braddock in "The Battle of Nurge's Field".

Leon instead turned his back on Michael and chose the wild life and the associates that came with it. It was a sore point with Michael who finally gave up on Leon and got on with his own career after only fighting twice in the year after Leon won the title.
kayjay 01-25-2007, 10:31 AM Joe and Jimmy Braddock in "The Battle of Nurge's Field".

I met Braddock several times years ago.
"The Battle of Nurge's Field" was when Jim borrowed his brother Joe's sweater without permission and Joe was 22 and 4 years older then Jim. Joe just turned pro after an Amateur career highlighted by capturing the New Jersey Welterweight Championship.
If you go by the book "Cinderella Man" by Jeremy Schaap, the fight went on for an hour before the police brought it up.
This was not an Official bout, it was just a street fight.
I did hear that in the Amateurs, brothers did box each other, BUT can't remember who they were.
kayjay 01-25-2007, 12:30 PM **** I fought my brothers a hundred times, but we weren't the Braddocks I guess.
kayjay 01-25-2007, 12:32 PM Thanks hhascup!!!
brownpimp88 01-25-2007, 03:42 PM When leon beat ali, was he being trained by eddie futch. All i can say is that eddie futch knew how to beat ali, he struck gold twice with frazier and norton.

I have an old magazine after Leon beat Ali and Benton said that if Leon fought Joe Frazier you couldn't make a fight like that because they would both destroy each other.
Brassangel 01-25-2007, 10:19 PM I think that Joe and Brian boxed each other on an episode of "Wings," and they were brothers. Before any real punches were exchanged, the two thought back to previous episodes where they worked as a team to make the most successful New England municipal airport in Nantuket and called the whole thing off. Betters and pay-per-view ticket holders were extremely sore, as this was a crappy way to end an episode of an already sub-par show.

Eddie Futch didn't "strike gold" with Frazier in the Ali fight. Frazier lost both fights with Ali with Futch in the corner.
brownpimp88 01-26-2007, 02:09 AM Many historians believe ken norton beat ali in all 3 fights. Ali was given the wins so he could make his claim as the best ever.

Child, he definetely didn't beat Ali in all three fights. He clearly lost the second one, and the third one could have went either way. He did win the first one though.
brownpimp88 01-26-2007, 02:20 AM Their 3rd fight is the 4th most contoversial decision ever in heavyweight boxing. Many people are convinced norton was robbed, they just didnt want him to win the trilogy. The guy was crying for god's sakes, why cuz politics of boxing sucks. Ali knows deep down inside that ken norton was indeed his toughest opponent and he had his number. Rest in peace eddie futch, you trained a guy that haunted ali for 3 straight fights.

It depends on how how you score a fight. Some people score it different than others. By the way, do you really think Norton beat Ali the second time?

IMO ali won the fight against jimmy young, he won the fight against shavers and he proly won the 2nd fight against norton. But come on, the third fight was a complete gift, it was handed to him on a silver platter. Norton beat him, nuff said.

Norton didn't exactly dominate the fight. It was close. I still say it could've gone either way.
brownpimp88 01-26-2007, 02:36 AM Well, do you think ali got any gifts?

i haven't seen the norton rubber match in years and never the young fight in full. Ali-Young was so dreadful that i don't imagine i'll ever watch it in full.
I thought Shavers beat Ali. I have no clue how any judge could give Ali nine rounds.
I never understood why people thought Jones got robbed. I thought Ali won that one clearly. Sure the crowd booed, but that means squat. it was a Jones crowd anyway.

Possibly in the third Norton fight, but then again, it was a close fight.
