View Full Version : Would you abort a baby you knew was going to be retarded?
Waylander 01-07-2003, 09:33 AM ****ed up question, but can be done seriously. Any thoughts? I would consider it, I would be afraid of what would happen after I am dead. The institutions for those with special needs are horrendous, and they most likely couldnt fend for themselves.
Yes, and I am sure having raised one, Shooto's parents would agree.
CTA likes fellatio 01-07-2003, 09:35 AM Waylander, its not like you'd ever have sex with a girl, anyways, so what're you worrying about?
Waylander 01-07-2003, 09:41 AM This is true.
Fallout 01-07-2003, 09:41 AM It depends on if he or she would have any sort of life.
Both highschools I went too had programs for the retarded. The first school I went too had a program for the EMH, or educatable mentaly handicaped. They were all pretty normal except for the fact they were a little slow. Some of them were like 20 with the mental age of a 10 year old.
The second school I went too has the TMH kids. Trainable mentaly handicaped. Well, I can tell you there was nothing "trainable" about these kids. They were in wheelchairs, they couldn't talk, the ones that weren't in wheelchairs were normaly very violent. Some of them just sat there, hunched over, waiting to die from the fact thier muscles and bodies were going to collaspe in on themselves.
Thats no way to live.
So I guess my answer is, it depends on how bad the child was going to be.
Nice answer Creed...did anybody actually read it?
Waylander 01-07-2003, 09:47 AM I read it, lets say you kid is in the first group. You die when your 80 and your kid is 50, with the mind of a 10 year old. Who is going to take care of them? The government? Ever been to a retirement community for old people? Its horrible, and those are the ones that people have paid for, imagine how bad it is for the retarded people who are on the relative welfare.
It is a harsh questions, but one that should be thought of. I have seen the conditions that mentally handicap people have to go through, I have seen how their parents pass away and are later taken care of (if you could call if that) by the state, or how their siblings end up taking care of them and the weight it puts on their lives and families. Its hard on every one. I would believe that I would not go full term knowing the child I carry would live a harsh life. I think many parents do have their children because of guilt or because they are worried of what other may think which to be in a selfish reason
rigid 01-07-2003, 10:01 AM unless i had unlimited money so that i could set up a trust so that after i was gone my child would be taken care of, i would abort. a little slow is one thing but full on retarded is something else.the quality of life the child would have would be low.chances are the child would know nothing but pain.
i want my child to have the best life possible and being born retarded eliminates that possibility from day one.

BWAHAHAHA!!
Shootoking is one ****ing retard I wouldn't mind clubbing in that giant size head like they do to baby seals in Alaska...
Aaron Bizarre 01-07-2003, 10:09 AM this is a ****ing hard question for me to answer. I dont really know.
Waylander 01-07-2003, 10:45 AM Rigid you brought up a good point with the trust fun, but lets say you leave the kid a million dollars and a house. He could get taken advantage of, maybe even sell the house for a snickers, or possibly robbed and not be able to defend himself.

I agree
rigid 01-07-2003, 10:58 AM that is true waylander.it would put my mind at ease though.if i went through all the right avenues and legal aspects of setting up the fund.to speculate on what would happen is one thing but i don't want to go to far.the chance a retarded child would get ripped of a fund that was precisely set up probably is not that high.for that same matter, you could have a perfectly normal child who gets their trust stolen from under their nose also.
personally, the fund would let me rest easy and not worry myself.
right on, the child would still need a legal guardian, someone to make decisions for them.
Waylander 01-07-2003, 11:27 AM Are there people out there you can pay that are caring and will take care of someone with special needs on a routine basis? Most likely so, at least I hope so. I am not a trusting person, to say the least. Its a scary thought the reason i brought it up was a radio caller was going to abort her child because it had a possibility of having downs. Her husband told her if she did, he is divorcing her. Now these tests aren't 100%, and I've heard there is a high false positive percentage. What about in that case? I am a gambling man, if my kid had a 50/50 chance I would let it ride and see what I got.
The Ensanity 01-07-2003, 11:40 AM Coathanger Abort that kid
lil'surfer girl 01-07-2003, 11:43 AM Okay, we've covered the care and well being of the mentally handicapped, but what about the day-to-day hardships they must endure. School, teasing, medical problems....I work with kids who by most standards are "normal" just a bit slower to comprehend. It kills me to hear them be made fun of to a point where I have completely come unglued on a few adults/teachers for allowing it to happen. If it were my child receiving this kind of harshness from society, I don't know if I could handle it.
I guess I am selfish...I want a "perfect" child. I want to see them enjoy life, go to college, get married, have kids.... If I were given a test early on in the pregnancy and told the baby had a 50/50 chance of being retarded, I don't think I would keep it.
But on a side note, if this test was optional, not something needed for prenatal care, then I would choose not to have it done and pray for a healthy baby.
Let's get back to Shootoking here...
Shootoking is one ****ing retard I wouldn't mind clubbing in that giant size head like they do to baby seals in Alaska...
Wasn't that beautifully said!?!? There is nothing I would rather do than blacken his squinty Hawaiin eyes!
CTA likes fellatio 01-07-2003, 12:37 PM You guys need to look on the bright side of things. . .having a retarded baby around would be a constant source of laughs! And it would get even funnier as the thing grew up. Damn, I would love to have my own personal tard! I would hang a sign on him that said, 'I'm retarded, give me money' and send him out to panhandle. Then I'd use the money to get drunk and beat him up because he's onyl a retard and no one would care anyways.
Bella 01-07-2003, 01:12 PM I agree with what LSG said. Mentally handicapped individuals are ridiculed and teased. They also need more attention, and to be honest, I don't know if I could provide the proper care the child would need. I also agree with what Kato said. She mentioned that if she knew there was going to be a major problem with the child, she would not carry it full term. As hard as it would be for me to abort, I believe I would. I think in ways, it is unfair to have a child that you know will be mentally handicapped.
I'm also a lot like Waylander. He said he doesn't trust just anyone, well, neither do I. I definately would not trust the government to take care of my child after I die. We all know how ****ed up the government is anyway. As for having a trust fund and leaving the child a house, I also do not think that would work properly. Like some of you have mentioned, the child may be taken advantage of, and lose everything they have.
So, all in all, I would more than likely abort the child if I knew for sure it would be severly mentally handicapped.
Waylander 01-07-2003, 01:23 PM One thing that got to me about a caller I heard on the radio yesterday, is a lady had a two year old child that was retarded and when asked that if she knew before hand she still would have had an abortion. Which kinda struck a chord in me. If you already have the child would'nt you love it more than anything and regardless of any handicap? Then I thought maybe she loves it so much she is willing to deal with the pain of the loss of her child to save it a life of pain.

Send it back!
How retarded are we talking? Super retaded of functionally retarded
Waylander 01-08-2003, 10:20 AM How retarded would the kid have to be for you to not consider, to consider, and then to abort?
I would say i would look at the quallity of life:
Vedgtable retarded - just existing=dead
Corky retarded=Lives
Waylander 01-08-2003, 10:42 AM What about like the kid from Mask retarded?
Waylander 01-08-2003, 10:47 AM Don't they give out free coathangers on abortion night at piston's games?
They are not called the hardest working team in the NBA for nothing, In fact i heard the Pistons actually do the abortion with their super long fingers. And if you are the first 500 abortions you get a free abortod fetus bobble head.
Waylander 01-08-2003, 11:09 AM I got a Steve Mcnair bobble head for christmas. He's awesome, I tap his head and ask him questions like a magic 8 ball.
rigid 01-08-2003, 11:16 AM this question does invoke a lot of thought.i agree with a little bit of what almost everyone has said.i have a 6 year old son and he has no problems, perfectly normal kid.he still has come home before and said that some kid was picking on him.i fell like i want to go drag a little 6 year old out of the class and slap him around.i really bothers me when i hear that ****.i talk to my son and he knows how to handle it now.i have been to the school/daycare center many times before getting in the teachers **** to call in the father/maother of the little mother ****er that was picking on my kid.i honestly don't think that i could handle what would be happeneing to my child had they been born like that.
it all comes down to you never kinow till you are in that spot though.ladies, the mother instinct takes over right away.i like to think that unless the kid was gonna be major ****ed up, i would keep it.like bzob said, just laying there drooling all over ****, no ****in way.being a little slow like the corkster, yeah that can be dealt with.
Kimura 01-08-2003, 12:23 PM The answer is definitely no. If this technology of finding out who would be retarded before they were even born were around many years ago, Money might not be with us today.
