Yes, I am very good friends with Chuck and his wife. I also have the boxing gloves that Liston wore for that bout.

I was impressed with the way Chuck kept coming at Liston despite the fact that he was getting carved up and picked apart. Then again Chuck only knew one way to fight and it wasn't going backwards. I had a good chuckle watching Al Braverman continue to wave Chuck towards Liston. I was reminded of the famous Liston quote:

Q) Is Wepner the bravest man you've ever fought?

A) No but his manager is!

YES, I heard that before too!

Chuck told me that Liston was the hardest puncher he ever fought.

The man still had skills at age 100...or whatever he actually was by that point. Thanks for the vid.

Liston was seriously underrated in the power department. He had a better one punch finish than Foreman IMO. Foreman was stronger but Sonny snapped more bodyweight into them. His jab was a force in itself, a downright offensive weapon and perhaps the best the division had seen since Joe Louis. In fact, boxing writers everywhere were comparing him to Louis at the time. Foreman never drew the same comparisons among the press at the time.

Not to turn this into Liston vs. Foreman or anything. ;)

liston had much better technique than foreman. if foreman would have been a technically better fighter he would have hit even harder.

i wonder did ppl tell foreman if he did things alittle different he would hit harder? if so why didnt the big idiot do it.(just an idiot if he was told to)

i think his amatuer coach did tell him, from what i can remember from beyond the glory or whatever when foreman was on it. he was a stubborn ****, he wouldn't let anybody tell him anything, but the truth is he would have sent guys flying out of the ring if he'd used proper technique. i see it when i watch his old fights, he hit from too far away - short, straight punches are the way to go if you're an inside fighter

Foreman did hit with proper technique occasionally, it's not like he NEVER threw any punches with good form, but most often he degenerated into a wild punching madman.

I wonder if Foreman fired Archie Moore and the Saddler brothers and tried to get a hold of Joe Louis to be his trainer. That would have been something to have Louis teaching Foreman how to punch. Louis was always fond of Foreman and his ability. They could have made a great pair together, like Ali and Dundee. He could have been the best puncher of all-time.

We only wonder.......

i think foreman's jab was more powerful but both could knock out any normal human withit!

listons left hook was brilliant, really fast and decapitatingly powerful

Thanks SABBATH....that's the first time I've seen that footage. Sonny's jab was obviously still a formidable weapon, even in this last fight of his career. And Chuck, damn....lol!! never realzed, really, how tall he was. He also seems better when being pursued, even though he eats a lot of leather.

Wepner was nothing more than a C+/B- contender, but he still looks like a breath of fresh air when compared to today's contenders. Just being 6'5" with an iron chin and plenty of balls would make him one of the better heavyweights today if he were put in this era.

What happened to all the Wepners of the boxing world?

I'm not even asking for a supertalent like another Riddick Bowe. I'd be happy just for a Wepner, Buddy Baer, big tough heavyweight who could go to war with these big softies and bring the pain.

Mercer was great for that in his prime.

No one is dependable anymore, they're all a bunch of inconsistent, spoiled kids. I just want fighters who show up to win from the opening bell, is that too much to ask for?

Wepner was a real character. Here is an appearance with Ali and Wepner on The Mike Douglas show prior to their fight. Part two is pretty funny as Chuck gives Ali all he can handle.

i remember the commentators comparing the fight with ali with a classic cat vs dog fight. the dog (wepner) corners the cat (ali) then gets his face scratched to pieces!

liston had a great jab IMO only bruno foreman and holmes had comparablepower in their jabs.
