Do you guys think bringing your girlfriend (or family members) to your fights, or to the gym when you train... is a good thing? or bad...

Me personally, If my girl is in the gym for some reason I go a lil harder like her presense pushes me... I know alot of you may say its bad but iono I like the encouragement. even when my brothers at the gym he's yelling and pushing me to that next level.

Im bringing my girl to the february fights, and my mind is already set "I will NOT lose infront of my girl" :)

but yeah, what's you guys take on bringing your girl or fam to your matches or to the gym

Fights I could see bringing your girlfriend and Family too, but to workout in front of people is just somebody trying to be a showoff IMO, only in rare instances can I see it....

My wife dropped by the gym once; she was working in the area and figured she'd drop in, watch me train, and we'd go grab a bite afterwards. Problem was, it smelled so bad in there that she told a trainer to tell me to meet her outside. She went to a local bar and waited for me. "My God, you come here every night?" "Yup." "Doesn't it stink?" "Yup."

She wants to come to my next fight, she says, but she has no interest in even being inside the gym. For our skills bouts and local smokers, the gym does a nice job with Lysol and Pine Sol; it's the only time the place doesn't smell offensive. Well, offensive to some.

Every person says they won't lose infront of their girl. You, on the other hand, will lose. Why? You suck using the philly shell.

Lmao that's idiotic, When you dont know something... You work on it and practice, the clip of me doin the philly shell was day 1 of learning it... with that said, I dont even have to use philly shell in a fight until I master it. Your talking like you have to use the philly shell in a fight lmao right

Are you willing to put some paypal $$ on it??

Ill throw 200. on it, back up that talk tuff guy

I have never bought anyone to the gym other than friends. And those friends have been training also, so it's not as if they are just spectating.

For my fight coming up a lot of people may be going it all depends, however.

My brother-in-law, about ten friends from college and their wives and girlfriends -- some of these guys I hadn't seen in over a year -- and my parish priest all showed up at my first fight. I was surprised how many supporters I had -- like, two whole rows. It really did make a difference; the cheering when I'd unload on the little bugger would really fire me up. I highly recommend having your friends come see you fight. Even if you lose, they will respect you for having the sack to step in the ring.

my gf used to always come to my fights but I've found I perform better when her or any of my family do not attend. It's probably more of a personal thing than general, I imagine some people would fight harder knowing their family are there but It just puts me off...

u should not be using the philly shell, its just plain stupid. My trainer has trained many people and has had some great fighters. However he still says hes never had someone good enough to teach the phillyshell. Your ****ed if u run into a strong guy who keeps his hands up and roughs you up. Watch Rjj vs Glen Johsnon, that type of **** could happen. I wish ya luck bro but ur gonna get tagged bad keeping that left hand down.

Appreciate u wishin me luck, instead of some that gets angry by what I chose to do lol...

And yeah you have a point with the RJJ vs Glen Johnson fight, but on the flip side, I highly doubt glen wouldve been able to do anything with a Prime Roy

but yeah it has its ups, and downs

yeah prime rjj blows away glen, but a big reason he lost is because his style of fighting is really odd and it only worked because of his incredible athleticism. Against Glen he fought the same way but he didnt have that tremendous speed. Unless u have that kind of speed advantage ur gonna get beat like an old roy jones does

oh yeah definately... I start out with both sorta up, til I get a feel of how fast my opponent is, then once Im comfortable and can see that Im alot faster I drop the left.... but when they both are up its more on the offensive side, than a winky defensive thing... Like in this video

Are you seriously saying you're as fast as RJJ was in that video? If you are, you should have sponsors lined up around the block. Good on you, man.

Why do ppl always take everything I say left.... I said when both are slightly up, its more of being on the offensive... meaning Im still boxing the same as if it was down, instead of jus havin them up blocking like winky

and then I put a link to show what I was talking about, I didnt say "Im this fast"

The problem with phillyshell i find is that you can block the right hand np, but its very difficult to block the left by moving into it, and quickly getting in position to roll again, very diffucult to do against someone with hand speed. Whenever i use the phillyshell i always end up getting hit with left hands to the side of the head, either that or i get hit down the center more because i dont turn properly after i block the right hand with my shoulder. My guard is like a winky wright type guard but only if my jab is working great will a drop my left hand. I also always roll when i throw a left to the body and i cant bring it up intime as well. My instincts want me to use phillyshell but I know using a winky wright type defense is much better. Not many people in boxing can do the phillyshell correctly it isnt common.

Your gettin hit with lefts down the middle? Did you try swatting those jabs away with your right hand?

i barely ever get hit down the middle... i usually get hit on the side of the head, if not its down the center but not too often. The reason why i get hit on the side of the head is because of trying to swat away the jabs. These are experiences from sparring an excellent fighter at my gym whos turning pro, so he always finds the hole in the defense.

ooh aight, yeah that pretty much explains it... but I think if your fightin someone with your amount of experience (which you will be in a tournament) then it should work fairly well... I would say keep practicing it, because just knowing how to do it wont hurt... You dont have to use it in an actual bout if you dont want to or dont feel comfortable but it's cool just to have the knowledge

yeah man but when my trainer is around he just yells for you to keep ur hands up. He won't teach the phillyshell to me. Only time I use it is with this guy whos turning pro and does the phillyshell as well. However, when i get up close to him he is never afraid to go into the full guard. You should definetely not be afraid to go into full guard for extra protection if your off balance and ur not set to counter or move right away. In other words always go into ur full guard when you could possibly get into trouble. So this means you should know how to put on a great guard, so ur gonna need to practice it

Yea true, Ima start working on full guard protection as well... Because after further review, Im gonna be usin that instead of the philly shell... Ima still box from my normal slightly low left hand stance, but when Im against the ropes and my opponent is throwing at me I will use a full guard (both hands up)

I never have a family member in the gym when I train, but it is individual. Some women and kids really get off on this stuff, and if it helps you train, more power to you.....

I have a fight coming up in a few weeks, (3rd one) and it'll be the first time my mom and a few friends of mine are going to be there. Don't know how it'll affect me, but i'll definitely be happier if I win infront of my mom.

Excuse me, WTF is the phillyshell? :P

My dad is there everytime as im 14 and can't drive so he has to bring me, it helped at the beggining but its like hes not even there cuz i've gotten used to him being there. My brother came last time. I had no idea I was sparrin' and he helped alot...Just being there. I went up against a tall skinny black guy that i've sparred 3 or 4 times because hes like the only person in the gym small enough for me and hes still 4 or 5 years older than me. I taught him what happens when you throw a ****ty ass slow jab :owned: .

This big guy who fought a lot like Dempsey used to bring his little girlfriend to the ring and she maddogged him to the point where he quit fighting. On the hand, this guy used to bring his cute girlfriend to the gym and they both worked out and often they'd lay down in the ring and get friendly.... :smileysex
