A post-mortem examination on a dog that killed a five-year-old girl will determine whether the animal was subject to the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Ellie Lawrenson, from St Helens, was mauled to death early on Monday morning by an adult pitbull terrier-type dog despite desperate attempts by her grandmother to save her.

The dog's owner - Ellie's uncle - had been officially warned about his pet's behaviour in June last year.

Owners of pure-bred pitbull terriers are legally to blame for attacks made by them under the provisions of the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act.

A spokeswoman for St Helens Council said the warning letter had been sent to the uncle, named locally as Kiel Simpson, after a neighbour said the animal had attacked his dog in May.

Several neighbours are reported to have said the animal had violent tendencies and at least one other person has claimed he and his dog were attacked.

Jackie Simpson, 46, had been babysitting her granddaughter while the mother, named locally as Lyndsay, was out celebrating New Year.

Ms Simpson also suffered serious injuries in the deadly assault.

The fiancé of Ellie's other grandmother, who did not wish to be named, said of the family: "They are all in shock, they're too upset to talk.

"She was just the loveliest girl you could hope to meet. We can't deal with all this attention, we're just in shock."

It is unknown at this stage whether Ellie was asleep when the dog pounced or what prompted the vicious attack, but officers will be investigating whether fireworks may have scared the animal.

On the news yesterday morning, they were interviewing the head police officer that was at the scene and he said that they destroyed the dog at the house because there was no way they could get it out of the area safely.

Eh? What do you want, pics of the dog biting into the girls flesh or maybe a few nice snapshops of her ravaged corpse? Maybe you were hoping to find a vid of the attack on youtube. That'd be a find.

Aren't you in the country where they showed the partially decapitated head of Nicole Brown Simpson on the front pages of news magazines?

I have no idea. Some of our newspapers (The Sun in particular) have printed some despicable front pages and all sorts of ****, so I wouldnt put it past em.

What the **** has that got to do with this? You trying to make some kind of a point?

Yes.

There was or is a less stringent content censor on what the UK is allowed as opposed to the US.

They edit out our news several times over before we get it.

In the UK the citizens are given more responsibilty.

In the US we are told what to believe.

Mate, I don't think anyone wants top see a five year old girl that has been torn apart, so I'm glad it has stayed out of the papers.

By the way, who is that in your avatar, if you don't mind me asking?

Not all. She was anticipating someone asking.

This is a Canadian girl who lives here in LA.

I "know" her quite well.

You should see the rest of her.

One of the better ones walking the earth to be honest..

I blame the owner, domesticated dogs aren't aggressive if disciplined.

No matter what type of dog or nature of the animal, you should never trust them around a small child alone.
I'm sure the family realise that now and I am sorry for their loss!

BTW I live very near to St Helens and have been working in Knowsley (hospital) today (very close) apparently the word is a firework went off outside the house which spooked the dog, then the child must have somehow disturbed the animal when it was distressed!

Unbelievably sad!

And yes the dog was immediately destroyed!

I agree with what your saying about not trusting the dog, the family will definitely never make a mistake like that again!

That's the story I heard, that the dog was frightened. I bet the young girl was absolutely terrified.

Thought the dog was destroyed. Thanks for the info :fing02:

people need to learn that these dogs are powerful and dangerous wild animals and children should not be left alone with them.

a toddler got killed outside of a pub whilst in a pram only a few months ago too. after being left alone.

Is it just me or is this another one of those stories which isnt really news worthy?
I guess it serves a purpose by reminding dumb people that dogs have the potential to kill small children. But really this isnt news is it.

It happens every ****ing year. Its just that it happened on New Years that people are making such a huge deal out of it. Im ****ing sick to death of those pictures of the kid looking all sweet and angelic.

Different species have different reactions and tendencies, but if an owner mistreats a dog, the dog can change.
