Was up for blue last year but wasn't able to compete at two shows, which put me back a bit. The way to get promoted here is to compete, and as they only come every few months, the chances of advancing are slim. If you have to work or can't get to comps, then you are pretty well ****ed...like me. I do beat a lot of our blue belts though pretty regularly and all the guys I have trained with for a long time think I should be blue, so that is good enough for me wondermut 01-02-2003, 05:25 PM Thats funny, I was told if you can hang with the blues then you should be a blue. Is the competition thing vary from school to school? The Ensanity 01-02-2003, 06:37 PM Originally posted by seldomTap 2 year white belt... But I do freestyle grappling. Zen 01-02-2003, 10:23 PM Originally posted by James Fulton hopefully sooner if i get up off my ass... havent trained this week because I got ****en ringworm :cuss: What are you using to treat your ringworm? My son has it, he's 9 and goes to bjj alread, he's gonna be a stud in about 5 years. I've been using bluestar ointment to get rid of it and it seems to be working. Zen 01-02-2003, 10:24 PM At my school you test for belts, 4 stripes on your white belt and you test for blue and so on. I have 1 stripe on my white belt, only been doing bjj for about 4 months though. seldomTap 01-03-2003, 12:16 AM Originally posted by wondermut Thats funny, I was told if you can hang with the blues then you should be a blue. Is the competition thing vary from school to school? It seems to be the way my instructors head guy wants to run it...save having too many guys go through the ranks too quick etc etc. Problem is, the comps are 8 hours drive away from where I live, which takes some planning to get to at the best of times. I have been hanging with the blue belts for a while now, but to be honest, the whole belt colour thing isn't so big a deal as when I was 12 and going for my black belt in TKD! Then I was all about the belt colour wondermut 01-03-2003, 12:29 AM I am with ya on that seldom. ****, I cant even get a blue belt at the places I train. Its not about the belt, its about the sport. The only good thing i see from the belt system is a feeling of accomplishment. But i will feel that when I tap my 1st blue belt. ;) Lobo 01-03-2003, 02:00 AM Purple belt. Took me 5 years to get it. James Fulton 01-03-2003, 10:09 AM Zen420 use Lamisil Lobo, congrats on such a respectable belt bro seldomTap 01-03-2003, 07:21 PM Well done Lobo...nice av also...gave me seizures at first but am now use to it! Spot on Wondermut...tapping a blue belt is always a buzz, especially when they get that "****, that didn't look good" expression on thier faces! Most of ther blues I train with have been rolling about the same time as me anyway so it isn't such a big problem for them Lobo 01-03-2003, 08:43 PM Thanks guys. I was promoted not too long ago. Keep training hard. seldomTap 01-03-2003, 09:13 PM Who do you train with Lobo and where abouts ?? Lobo 01-03-2003, 10:02 PM Fabio Santos (Rickson Gracie Black Belt and 2X World Champ) in San Diego, CA. seldomTap 01-04-2003, 12:33 AM I read an article/interview about him once...he sounded like a really good guy and excellent teacher...you are fortunate to have him! Damn living here sometimes...seriously Lobo 01-04-2003, 02:32 AM Yeah, he's great (technical as ****). VulgarTheClown 01-04-2003, 03:08 AM No belt yet but i give good grapplers a run for there money. I don;t mean to hijack a thread but, I will be signing up to go to an ATT school soon. and i will be startin as a white belt BUT i want to compete MMA ASAP! and i don;t think they would let me compete till i am at least a blue belt but considering i've been on the mat for a long while will i be able to get my blue that much faster? (I have tapped Judo Black Belts, and have given BJJ guys and TJJ black belts hardcore runs or there money (mostly ending in stalemate that means no subs)) Lobo 01-04-2003, 04:47 AM If you join an academy as a white belt and start giving guys (blue belts) a run for their money I see no reason why you wouldn't get your blue belt faster. Some schools have testing for their belts, not so at Fabio's. He watches how well you do against the higher level students in the class and bases his decision on that. So if you just get your ass kicked all the time, you're gonna be a white belt a long ****in time. James Fulton 01-04-2003, 11:01 AM you will get your blue faster if you do well against blues i am in the situation, just switched schools and starting as a 0 stripe whitebelt but i'm skill level of about a 4 stripe (in my opinion) so he's letting me test for my stripes alot faster and then i'll hopefully get blue real fast :) I tapped out a few blues and hang with the rest of them Zen 01-04-2003, 02:03 PM Originally posted by Lobo If you join an academy as a white belt and start giving guys (blue belts) a run for their money I see no reason why you wouldn't get your blue belt faster. That's how it should be, when you can beat 50% of the blue belts you face, you should move up, and so on and so forth. I wish my school did it that way. We have to test, but I'd prefer the other way. Each to their own G! Big-g 01-05-2003, 07:40 PM i dont do Judo! some judo players are so god damb anyoying! bjjmick 01-15-2003, 08:55 PM There was a brown belt Judo guy who came to our BJJ academy one Saturday morning, tapped out a couple of the white belts (& stalemate with others) but went nowhere near any of us blue belts or any of the purple belts. Then he had the gall to think that validated his opinion that Judo was superior to BJJ! What a wanker!!! rtbrouwer 02-09-2003, 09:31 AM I have made about every type of person tap... Big, small, kickboxer, judoplayer, wrestler etc....... Also I have been tapped out by about every type of person..... In other words, It is very dependend of the person A good judo player will tap out a regular BJJ player and a good BJJ player will tap out of regular Judo player and two good players will never tap eachother out because they compete in their own sport and are too busy to worry about what's better! seldomTap 02-09-2003, 03:57 PM Mick...we had a guy come down who was a national champ in Judo. A good guy though, not big headed or anything like that. His throws were great, but he was getting dominated on the ground by pretty much everyone VulgarTheClown 02-09-2003, 04:24 PM Currently a white if i hadn;t just got hurt blue by April. it has now been pushed back a bit. bjjmick 02-09-2003, 05:03 PM Yeah - its funny. When the judo guy came to training, none of us were trying to convince him bjj was superior. We were just saying theres good stuff to be learnt from both, but he was getting all defensive etc... I told him I wouldnt mind getting some judo throws in my repertiore. Oh well, - not everyone is ready to widen their pallete. seldomTap 02-09-2003, 08:03 PM It can be a pretty big kick in the ass for some guys...we have had all styles of martial artits come in and get tapped out by guys they out weighed by 30 + lbs. It takes a bit to happily get put into a position away from your comfort zone, which for a lot of people BJJ is well and truly outof that place handjobs4dollars 02-09-2003, 11:13 PM I do a freestyle grappling that takes elements from bjj wrestling judo and others. So we don't have belts but I would think I'm a white belt in bjj. submission_guy 02-27-2003, 03:25 AM Originally posted by seldomTap It seems to be the way my instructors head guy wants to run it...save having too many guys go through the ranks too quick etc etc. Problem is, the comps are 8 hours drive away from where I live, which takes some planning to get to at the best of times.
