17 hacked in rampage
December 30, 2002

A CRAZED man attacked 17 people with a butcher's cleaver in the tourist city of Hangzhou in east China, state media reported.

Four of the injured were in critical condition after the "madman" rampaged yesterday inside and near the city's Jiulianxincun Market, the China News Service (CNS) said.

The man, identified as Fu Fuquan, 39, grabbed a cleaver from a pork vendor in the market and hacked people indiscriminately, witnesses said.

His victims included a couple of newlyweds, elderly shoppers, and a four-year-old child.

One shopkeeper said she saw a woman in her 20s run past her shop, only to be caught by Fu who slashed her with the cleaver.

Bystanders took the injured to nearby hospitals before several ambulances arrived at the scene, the reports said.

The Beijing Morning Post said some people chased the man with sticks and brooms and he was eventually cornered in a beverage shop.

Police arrived and demanded he put the cleaver down. When he refused, they threatened to shoot him, witnesses said.

The man had lived in Hangzhou for several years in a neighbourhood near the market, according to CNS.

It was not immediately clear why he carried out the attacks. People in the area who knew him said he seemed quite normal, CNS said.
