Nas shaking up rap industry with new album
Dec. 17, 2006 at 8:13PM
By naming his newest album "Hip-Hop is Dead," U.S. rapper Nas aims to push others in the genre to reconsider their direction and revitalize their music.
The 33-year-old rapper, whose true name is Nasir Jones, told the New York Post he picked the title to spark a controversy.
"I'm just sitting back and enjoying this. I knew people would be upset over the title, and I'm glad," Jones said. "Some rappers are cursing me, but there are a lot who are applauding me silently."
The rapper, who has sold more than 12 million albums, is urging other rappers to learn from the past to secure a future for their genre.
"There are so many artists that don't respect hip-hop. They don't know its roots," said Jones, whose new album launches Tuesday. "They're just in it to make money. Once they go platinum, they're like, 'Screw everyone.' They don't even take the time to learn about its pioneers."

I love the idea and agenda.Nas has been true to the game throughout his career and that why he is not as mainstream as a few others that have survived 10+ years in the game but he is also far more successful than many too.He is right, what happened to the struggle and plight of the ghetto and the reason this music came out in the first place? Now it is a bunch of clowns playing checkers not chess as Pap would say and pretty much ****ting on their true people by bragging and pissing money away like it ain't nothing when the Ghetto still ain't changed much since this **** started.Hip Hop was supposed to be the difference,Something that united the struggling people not threw it right back in their faces that hey I am rich now and got rims now so you get em, especially when these cats are'nt even the thugs they claim to be well most anyway, but it is going in reverse now that any dumb **** with a silly ass song and laffy taafy or grillz or rims and what not can get a hit out of it.The worst part is then thay get their dumbass talentless friends to join in to make more money off the label or click thats hot amongst teeny boppers for the moment. It is pathetic what happened to making a difference and preaching street knowledge rather than throwing it in the faces of our youth that you are rich because you can sing a gay ass catchy chorus, while portraying you did it hustlin.......Ot causes more crime and more inner city violence trying to be the hard ass they think these rap cats are.If you want real Gangsta music today you listen to Ross or Jeezy because good MCs or not you can tell these cats have been on the streets. If you prefer vets that have been there and can still evolve as they grow rich or not and still send a positive message you want Nas to healline it.

... does that mean they relize what they are doing for hiphop is killing it?

I used to think that, but every rapper from the south is not killing hip hop. Granted, I feel they have artists not up to par as do East, West, Midwest etc.
they just took hip hop to a different region and a different level. The South is the big subject because their in the lead right now. But I feel Nas about knowing the roots of the game, and having respect for what your doing. Because really how many of these artists will still be here 2,3, yrs from now?

There were a few songs he scrapped that would have been better left on the album like Where Yall At and Dont Hate Me Now.

I also think its funny that Mad Skillz came out with the song Hip Hop Died months before this album dropped and he didnt get any attention for it.
