Just wondering what do Filipinos think about people with tattoos? The question is more directed toward Filipinos from Philippines, but anybody can put their opinions.

I'm curious because my parents and older Filipinos in general don't look at it in a positive way. I'm also wondering is it because they don't like it or is it just colonial metality (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_mentality)?

I also found the Tatak ng Apat Na Alon (http://apat-na-alon-tribe.com/home.html) site. They're a group of people trying to revive Filipino tattoo culture.

That's what my parents said too. But what I'm wondering is when did we start looking at tattoos as a bad thing.

If we look at our cousins in the Pacific islands they are proud to wear their tattoos and its socially accepted. When did tattoos really become a social no no in the Philippines and why do most people still think that way?

Would prisoners really wear tattoos if it was seen as a good thing?

Do you know that those imprisoned & got out maybe bec of parole or they have done their term have tattoes bec it was forcibly given & look at their tattoes
it's mostly the names of their cellmates who ****ed them in their ass, would like to ask those ex-con why they got theirs?you won't get an answer coz it's very embarassing.Likewise, nowadays if you have tattooes or piercings you won't be allowed to donate blood for fear of contamination, like.shared needles used in the process, you might spread aids/hepa,without knowing it.What if a member of your family needs blood or in an amergency situation where life & death warrants blood transfusion,do you think you will be allowed to give blood if you have tattoes?i doubt that...But,it's up to you,if you want it then go ahead, who cares anyways,it's your life.:pat:

Now on the donations part. You are talking in the Philippines right? If so, wouldn't the hospital run test on the blood first before using it. Also, if my one of my family members need blood I wouldn't care what the person looks like. All I care about is that the blood is healthy and a match. Last, they don't share needles in the hospitals. Everything is disposable. Only place I know where they reuse needles is Cuba.

Yes. I do know that those tattoos are forced on them. My father has friends inside Munting Lupa. My family lived in San Pedro, Laguna, town bordering that town. Again, tattoo portrayed as a bad image. It goes back to tattoos being viewed as a negative thing. Would those prisoners draw tattoos on those guys if they thought that it would only enhance the guys prestige in prison. No, its to humiliate them.

People never talk about tattoos of a man wearing one for protection(anting-anting) or a tribesman's story on his body. First thing that comes on people's mind is "tattoo bad". We never talk about it as our heritage, culture, and history. Most of the time is "that guy got ****ed in the ass in prison".

All I really want to know is why most Filipinos are so negative when it comes to tattoos?

It's a world-wide practice, not only in the phil.,they won't allow you to donate blood if you have tattooes.Like i said, why will you think of others negative perceptions,it's your life,if you want to have tattoes fine, you can go ahead,no one is preventing you to do so,ok?

and what anting-anting are you saying,do you believe in that?Come on man, grow up,to think that you're in a modern world & still believe in superstition.:sucks:

I don't really know much about the procedures in Phil. on blood/plasma donations, I'll admit that. In America though, people with piercings and tattooes can donate.

Yes sir, I wanna get a tattoo and its not because people look at it in a bad way that I haven't gotten one. Its more of a financial reason.

I've already stated that I just wanna know why people look at it so negatively.

Yeah. I know people in the Philippines never see tattoing as a positive thing. Again though, I'd just like to know why people in the Philippines don't like it. So far I really don't have a straight answer why. All I got is an attack on my belief.

!!HiSpeedJay!! Already showed that he thinks people with tattoo are disease carriers. Thats fine. People can believe what they want.

I mean, you can't hate something just because you hate it. You gotta have a reason.

The question is why.

Wait 12 months after a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis. Learn more about hepatitis and blood donation.

Acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity using sterile technique. Only a few states currently regulate tattoo facilities, so most donors with tattoos must wait 12 months after tattoo application before donating blood. You should discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation.

Don't exactly know where you get cannot donate.

As to your 2nd question on why............in my opinion it's mostly because a tattoo is a sign of being imprisoned. There are no natives in the P.I. that have a culture of tattooing each other.

Just wondering what do Filipinos think about people with tattoos?

This was answered.............and now you're asking why. Asking why doesn't not give you definite answers in general....and that's what you got here...you should have known that. Would we really exactly know how each of the family in the Phillippines feel about tattoos?

Yo. My bad Chups. The statement was not directed to you or anybody else except HiSpeedJay. It was concernign about his comment on my belief on anting-anting.

Several tribes in Phil. practice tattooing. Buntoc tribe, Ifugao, to name a few. Legazpi called Philippines Isla de los Pintados (island of painted ones)when he arrived in Panay Island.

There's nothing you can do about that......older folks sees tattoos as a bad thing. I don't know how old you are but if you're mature enough...you'll learn not to let what other people think bother you. If you really want it then get it. If you have it then be happy with it. problem here is in japan specially in the onsen(public sauna )you will get stared at.
(I am even a bit awkward btw those jap. looks at me coz either I have a bigger dick than them even If I dont have wood :D or coz I have a bit muscular body)

lots of people still thinks that if you got tatoo ,you are connected to the yakuza.my old co worker always try to cover his tatoos but we all know he retired or was release already.but either way you dont want them to alienate you.

but is the policy about tatoos concerning about blood donations still in effect?
I really want to have one(not coz it is just cool but because I want it to be a symbols and constant reminder of past experiences.) but if one day my love ones need my blood I would gladly donateit to them.
making me think of getting one twice.

Leviticus 19:28

Thanks for qouting the Old Testament

Levitucus 19:28 states-28 " 'Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD"

So do you follow everything the man says. If you do, do you also follow these:
" 'Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." Levitucus 19:27
Shame on you if you trim your beard.

" 'Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material" Levitucus 19:19
Shame on you for not wearing 100% cotton

See the thing is I see the Old Testament as more of a guide/law book for those people in that time. For me some of those laws are outdated. There are still some valid ones that make sense to me, but I can't just read it and follow it just because its written.
