What do you call his career prior to signing on to Def Jam? He existed before Jay-Z, and will exist after Jay-Z.Nas could have easily made this album on Columbia, they let him do whatever the hell he wanted. Why? Because he was successful, all of his albums aside from Nastradamus were critically acclaimed, and Jay-Z had nothing to do with any of them, except for Hip Hop is Dead. Jay-Z didnt tell Nas how to feel, or how to make an album. If he did, Jay's new one wouldnt have been weaker than Hip Hop is Dead.

You dont have to 'sell out' when you are already selling records making the kind of music that means something to you(which is what Nas has been doing since like '93)
http://www*****.com/news/stories/4609.html
"Hip-Hop Is Dead will be the follow-up to 2004's Streets Disciple, which has sold 694,000 copies in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In his 11 years with Columbia, Nas' catalog has sold 12 million units." Again, how can he 'sell out' by signing with Def Jam if A.he isnt changing up his style in an effort to sell more, and B.he's already sold over 10 million records by doing his own thing for over a decade?

Before 2pac died, he had planned to 'team up' with Bone Thugs, BCC(east coast hip hop crew) and a few others ahahahaha. 2pac and BIG didnt have a chance to squash their beef. Jay and Nas did.Nas didnt have to team up with Jay, he chose to. He can't be called a sell-out, when he's not changing up his style in exchange for selling more records. He doesnt need to be on Def Jam, he doesnt need Jay-Z, obviously, because he sold over 10 million albums without Jay-Z.

Listen to "You Know My Style" by Nas, if you think you "cant bass his **** and roll down the window". Just because he joined forces with Jay-Z, doesnt mean he sold out. Nas will go nearly platinum or better because he's Nas, he doesnt need Jay-Z. I used the record sales quote, because you called him a sellout. Again, he's got no reason to even THINK about selling out when he's already sold over 10 million records doing his own thing.

Pumpin Bass filled music doesnt get women. If thats your approach to picking up girls, I think you need to get your mind back on track.
Nas is one of the most decorated Mc's of all time and what matters is substance, he will always be remembered in the music world as one of the best to ever do it. Having great production ontop of great lyrics, flow, and unqiue fresh style in my mind makes a great album. Yung Joc, do you honestly think he will be remembered? Its called a generic style. The south was fresh and original when dudes like Face and Outkast were releasing music we had not heard before and **** that was dope to play and enjoy. Majority of today's rappers from the South follow the same formula, get a southern based producer (Nitty ;example), layer the track with bass and talk about cash. While that may make a good club song, it doesnt really count as legimate great music. Do you know how many songs like that have been played and forgotten. Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, TI and Ludacris I think are the only dudes with fresh music from that region as of late.

Def Jam + Nas = Jay-Z
ROSEWOOD 12-11-2006, 05:40 PM Playaz, Nas has indeed produced a few good albums in his day but in this day and age, Nas is way to serious for his listeners...Life stories dont cut it anymore...Listeners want wood wheels and grillz...you know...But then again, I truly believe he signed with jay because he know where the money was...Jay Z is money and Nas has money...big difference
MetalVomit 12-11-2006, 10:01 PM Playaz, Nas has indeed produced a few good albums in his day but in this day and age, Nas is way to serious for his listeners...Life stories dont cut it anymore...Listeners want wood wheels and grillz...you know...But then again, I truly believe he signed with jay because he know where the money was...Jay Z is money and Nas has money...big difference
Listeners want "wood wheels and grillz", only until something new catches their ear, then they want "that". Nas has been around for about 14 years, and it hasnt been because he's done what radio listeners want to hear. Nas didnt sign with Def Jam to sell more records, if that was the case, he would change up his subject matter, and rap about "wood wheels and grillz", in order to reach radio listeners. Now, since he didnt do that, which is evident upon listening to his new album, how can you possibly say it's for money? He didnt change his style to accomidate the listeners, he changed record labels, and did the exact same ****, music-wise, as his last 3 albums. And he'll still sell at least 500,000 copies, easy. Because of his new record label? No. Because of his fan base, who appreciate what he brings to the genre of Hip Hop.
"If not for Jay Z there would be no Hip Hop Is dead". That has a double meaning to me. This may not be a popular idea but I contend that the South didn't kill Hip Hop...Jay Z did. The person that took up the mantle after Big and Pac died was going to determine the future of Hip Hop. nas appeared to be the rightful successor but he never claimed the throne. Jay stepped into the picture and after being unsuccessful with his only real album he decides he's going to have "dumb down for his audience to double his dollar" and commercialize. He brings in the era of "Cash Money and Hoes" most of the time with simple lyrics that anyone can catch. Jay z established the atmosphere for modern hip hop. Much of Southern rap could have never survived in the 94' -96' world of Nas, Biggie, 2pac and Common. Jay Z opened the door. Now because Jay's stuff may not be as bad as some of the stuff that has come as a result of him people somehow don't see the connection. Nas once told jay "you sold your soul for riches". Now Nas believes it dosen't matter...Hip Hop is dead. The only thing left he claims (as you may have seen on the interview from Hot 97 that i posted here) is to move to make money (sad). One day he suggests someone might come along that will revive hip hop but that is a long way off. So from this standpoint, he might as well hook up with jay (whom he accused of selling out long ago) Hip Hop is dead anyway and this move will make him even more high profile. Remember that Nas has not just signed up with a label but he's hooked up with jay on music collaborations and commerically in a way that connects them at the hip. If Jay Z was far more visible than Nas before it is inevitable that associating with jay in this way will radically increase nas' visibility. In my opinion jay Z killed hip Hop...the South is just cremating it.

That's nicely said and well thought out but hip hop was going in the hip pop direction anyway...Puffy was killing hip hop slowly and eventually BIG would of went into the garbage we have now (majority of it from the South). We had glimpses of it on Life After Death.

I didn't say the South was killing Hip Hop, In my original post i state outright that it did not kill hip hop. Cremation is what happens after something has already been killed (by something else). To tell you the truth i really wish i had another name for the music i'm talking about. It's stupid to speak of the "the south" as if all the music from there is the same. It also probably makes conversations like this much more heated than they need to be because when you talk about an entire region like that, people rightfully get upset about it.

You did it when discussing with me as well. I wasnt insulting the South, and you still stereotyped the East. I'm not an "e.coast supporter", and just because an MC hates on the hip hop that gets played on the radio(see sig), it doesnt mean that they're hating on the south, nor does it mean they are an "e.coast supporter". By being closeminded like you are on the subject, you're missing out on a LOT of good hip hop, not just from the east, but the west, north, and midwest.

the funny thing is. i listen to hiphop everywhere. but i got so tired of the south sucks talk. i decided to hate on it although i have a few of my favorite songs of all time come's outta the east

This is the kind of **** that used to be on the radio, that brought hip hop to the mainstream in the late 80's-early 90's. That's why so many fans are sick of repetitive **** on the radiowaves nowadays. Then it was diverse, people trying to be unique, now it's people copying whatever the last man did that sold records:

I am no fan of C. Rocka....If you feel he is hip hop then **** it..What is Hip Hop..no one really knows...De le Soul, most feel that type of music is considered hip hop...Wack ass Q-tip..****ers thought he was hip hop before he flipped the script..Jay Z & Nas, millions feel they are Hip Hop....Me personally, I feel hip hop = "good" music...

Godhandz....
No doubt **** was diverse as hell in the 70's - 90's...Only a few artist today manage to keep **** interesting...Luda, Outkast, Trickdaddy just to name a few..You can always find a track or two on these cats albums that make you say "WTF". Hell even Diddy switched his **** up with his last album with Christina Aguliar and that chick from the ***** cat dolls...
I admit the South is repetitive but thats whats selling now...just when people get tired of it then somebody is coming out with a new dance or something...Thats what keep it alive...thats music
ROSEWOOD 12-14-2006, 11:58 AM You might be thinking of chub rock.
Fat dude...lyrics something like "Its the chub rock chuck on the scene with the mean and a pocket full of green"....That is him....I stand corrected Godhandz...

I really can't quote any ofhis lyics, but he was a fat dude. I remember a video I seen of his a long time ago on BET. Never heard his album(s).
