View Full Version : Gatti vs. Jesse James Leija next????
PRboxingfan 09-20-2004, 12:54 PM I read in a Puerto Rican newspaper recently that Cotto's people tried to make a fight with J.J. Leija for Cotto's first title defense but he turned it down stating that he and Gatti are extremely close to signing for a fight in December or January. Isn't Mayweather his mandatory? Won't he lose his belt if he refuses to fight Floyd?
Those are the important questions to answer. I've been saying all along that Arturo "paper champion" Gatti would run from Mayweather all he can. At first I thought he'd try and fight Hatton but I see he found himself an opponent willing to fight in Atlantic City and who shouldn't give him much problems in the ring.
I'm thoroughly disapointed in Gatti. He should be man enough to fight his mandatory and, then, take on whomever he pleases. I hope he gets stripped by the WBC and they let Mayweather fight somebody else for the vacant title.
Dark Destroyer 09-20-2004, 01:52 PM I would rather see Arturo fight Floyd that Jesse James for sure. Floyd -Arturo is a very attractive fight on paper and i personally think Gatti will give Floyd his biggest test to date. Gatti is a true warrior who will give Floyd hell, his boxing skills are getting better but Floyd is the king of that department. Even though i think Gatti would be a tough fight for Floyd i still say Mayweather beats him on the cards. :D
QueenCity 09-20-2004, 02:24 PM I can't believe the Gatti/Mayweather fight isn't on yet. After Gatti knocked out Dorin, I felt the fight would happen by the end of the year. But it seems now like Gatti/Mayweather will never happen and that sucks. I just don't see the reason for Gatti to take on Leija what will that prove, he needs to start fighting some real talent for him to be looked at as somthing other than a brawler.
abdiel2k3 09-20-2004, 02:27 PM same situation as Oscar-Hopkins
my heart says gatti
but my brain says Mayweather
but yet again ill fall victim to my heart
Gatti all the way and by KO

:D Even though the safe option would be Floyd you can never disreguard Arturo, he is a true warrior.

:) Hey your a true dedicated loyal boxing fan. You get my complete respect with what you just said. I would route for Oscar too if they had a rematch
mic573 09-20-2004, 03:02 PM Floyd Mayweather will beat Gatti. Arturo is tough and can hit hard but I don't expect Mayweather to approach a fight with Gatti they he did against Corley. I think Gatti can give Mayweather some trouble but Mayweather does a little more in every round to take a decision. It may be a tough fight but the scorecards won't reflect it. Mayweather by lopsided decision.
Sir_Jose 09-20-2004, 04:45 PM Make no mistake Gatti and his people are scared ****less of Floyd
Dark Destroyer 09-20-2004, 04:54 PM Make no mistake Gatti and his people are scared ****less of Floyd
What makes you say that? I think Gatti is more than ready for Mayweather.
Sir_Jose 09-20-2004, 04:56 PM are you kidding?
Gatti's people know a fight with Floyd is a sure loss. Gatti has been kept very far away from quality opponents his entire career and its not about to change
urdaddyinAZ 09-20-2004, 05:01 PM Gatti and his people ar enot afraid of Floyd, they do think that it's a likely loss and would set him back as far as paydays go. Thus, a couple more rinky dink fights against well known but non-formidable opponents to make a little extra pocket change. Then a mega fight where Gatti finally makes 5-10 million and his career is over. It's a business boys. Gatti isn't gonna fight Mayweather yet, cause he hasn't made enough money yet and he wouldn't get 5-10 million right now for that fight. That's the truth!
Sir_Jose 09-20-2004, 05:03 PM Gatti is not going to get 5-10 million for any fight, hell he didn't get that when he fought DLH

I just thought with his impressive performance against Dorin and his epic battles with Ward would make him a worthy foe. It would be worth the money, Floyd can outbox Gatti but what do you think would happen if Floyd got caught with some good hits from Arturo?
urdaddyinAZ 09-20-2004, 05:12 PM Jose....if Gatti fights and beats say Leija, then say Hatton. Then Mayweather beats say Cotto and Spinks. You don't think the public would pay and thus getting Gatti a big (10-15 million) payday? I sure do, he is the most exciting fighter in boxing today. We just saw what some were touting as the fight of the decade and it was a bust. Not entertaining at all in my opinion. The fans are the ones that write these fighters paychecks ultimately because we demand the fights we wanna see and WE PAY FOR THEM. Every boxing fan I know personally would pay $60 to see Mayweather-Gatti...........and alot of these same guys didn't pay to see Nard-DLH. I can't say I blame them......it was a fight set up to be boring. Nard is traditionally a boring fighter and DLH's only chance was to outbox him. I'm trying to see some leather fly......MAB-Morales deserve 10-15 million a piece to but they won't get it cause they are Mexican............if one of them were a white boy....the fight would break the bank.
Sir_Jose 09-20-2004, 05:18 PM Do you really think beating up a 5'3 lightweight is impressive?
urdaddyinAZ 09-20-2004, 05:20 PM Who are you referring to?

if he beats all thos guys? hell he might lose to Leija. Gatti is an average fighter at best, he has all the heart in the world but he is ver limeted and has pretty much been beaten up everytime he has stepped up.Hatton will never fight Gatti cause Warren wont let it happen.
Floyd is a Bob Arum fighter and Don King controlls Spink...fight that will never happen also why would Arum put two of his best fighters in the ring with eachother at this point in there careers?
Actually Morales makes more money than Gatti cause Morales is a bigger draw. Thats why Morales gets 150-300,000 PPV buys and Gatti has never headlined a PPV.
Sir_Jose 09-20-2004, 05:24 PM Who are you referring to?
Wez
about Gatti beating Dorrin
SweetScience 09-20-2004, 05:29 PM I will rather see Mayweather fight the winner of Tszyu/Mitchell. Beating overrated Gatti doesnt prove anything.
urdaddyinAZ 09-20-2004, 05:31 PM Yeah I agree, bottom line is none of Gatti's recent victories should be all that impressive to fight fans that know he can't really hang with the top class fighters in his division. I'm Gatti's biggest fan, but I know his limitations and after I've seen the scum of the earth get rich off this sport. I'd really like to see a class act and a warrior like Gatti get paid for all he's given the sport and it's fans.
mic573 09-20-2004, 05:40 PM I don't think Gatti will ever get a 10 million dollar pay day. HBO knows he is a good attraction on their network but they also know that he is not on the level of the 10 million dollar fighters. Better fighters like Morales don't even get 10 million for a fight so I don't think he will. Really Gatti will only get in the Hall Of Fame for his willingness to get in slugfests and shorten his life not for any great accomplishments. I am an Arturo Gatti fan but he isn't a great fighter just a great fight most of the time.
Dark Destroyer 09-20-2004, 05:43 PM Do you really think beating up a 5'3 lightweight is impressive?
:D Now you word it like that then not really but i was impressed that he stopped him in 2 rounds. Nobody else had before.
Hurlex 09-20-2004, 07:48 PM i dont know if gatti will ever get that much money (he deserves it thought for all the excitment he has given us fans over the years)...but yeah i would love to see gatti/mayweather and would pay what i did for dlh/hop-because i know it would be full of excitment..i dotn know who said it earlier but i totally agree:
my heart saids gatti but my brain said mayweather...-well said..but how bitter sweet it would be to have gatti ko floyd...god that would be even better then seeing dlh hit the canvas in the 9th round

I must admit that seing Oscar go down like that was priceless...I always cheer for the underdog but to see Oscar's FIRST knockout lost was history.
Anywho, I truly doubt that Mayweather would get floored by Gatti. And Mayweather doesn't have the power to break Gatti's freekish chin. He'd win easily on points.

What do you think would happen if Gatti and DLH fought again?
m00ks 09-20-2004, 08:33 PM What do you think would happen if Gatti and DLH fought again?
I don't see anything different except maybe the fight would end sooner. After Oscar tasted middleweight punches, Gatti's punches would tickle. Oscar was quicker and stronger than Gatti. And I think Oscar was still quick even in the B-Hop fight, not as quick as he once was but enough to take out Gatti.
Gatti's only chance is maybe to take it in late rounds. Oscar would have lost his speed by then.
Also, even if Gatti is boxing more and is more on the defensive these days, I think Oscar would always be the better boxer.
I'd say KO round 7. Even though I said it might end quicker, I see Gatti boxing and using the ring. But Oscar wil catch him and it will all be over.
You?

I think it would end sooner than that by KO or by Gatti's corner throwing in the towel.
Although Gatti is trying to box now, he will still try and brawl.
I think DLH has gotten a bit stronger and he will take out Gatti in boxing and/or brawling.

Now DelaHoya Mayweather would be more like it. There's a boxing match if you ever wanted one.
m00ks 09-20-2004, 08:39 PM p4p Of course..

I still see DLH winning.
Mayweather doesn't have the power to beat DLH and I think DLH could outbox Mayweather.

But if Mayweather had power...then it owudl be something else.
Sometimes I just wish all matchups were possible and that it was one universal weight just to see how people's differnt styles would play with one another.

But there's never a dull moment in a Gatti fight, so, whichever comes (first?), I won't mind. Having said that, I'd like to ask, what are the chances of a Gatti-Mayweather fight? Reports are rampant that Pretty Boy has his eyes on Oscar, which, is understandable because, with all his skills and achievements, he still has to climb the ring in what can be called a MEGAFIGHT and earn MEGABUCKS! He does not have the luxury of time. He, himself, has not been a top draw; he needs a De la Hoya to pad his retirement coffers. But if Floyd agrees to do it at jr. mid vs. Oscar, it should be a match best left in the realm of fantasy boxing. Fans have been victimized enough by such matches.

How much weight is Mayweather willing to gain and DLH willing to lose?
grayfist 09-20-2004, 09:16 PM How much weight is Mayweather willing to gain and DLH willing to lose?Pretty Boy is saying he's willing to go up to jr. mid. Oscar has been aloof to the possibility. Could be he has his eyes fixed on a rematch with the comebacking Tito. Or, he's forcing Mayweather to put it on paper that the fight be at jr. mid, his realm. If his reason is the former, then Gatti-Mayweather becomes probable, I think, even if Leija gets into the act. If it is the latter, oh well...
:(
PRboxingfan 09-21-2004, 08:52 AM DLH has said, repeatedly, that he will NOT fight Mayweather because he has too much respect for his dad. PBF can talk all he wants but that fight will not be made. Oscar has said he will wait for the winner of Trinidad - Mayorga and Mosley - Wright to decide who he will fight next; basically, he's looking at Wright and Tito for his next match because he knows that's where the money is.
As for Gatti, if he doesn't fight PBF he will lose his title and J.J. Leija will turn the fight down if he can't fight for a title. He's said he needs one before he retires and he's only fighting Gatti because it's a more winnable fight than fighting Cotto.
PBF won't be able to take DLH's power and Oscar, having been hit by bigger punchers, would just walk him down en route to a 9th or 10th round TKO. Floyd is better kept at or below Welterweight.
m00ks 09-21-2004, 01:01 PM Still can't believe Bojado couldn't put Leija away....Too bad
